Hi all, Lately things have really gone down hill for me regarding the list. In an effort to be understood better, I post this: Although I've tried to do the best I can on projects & trying to make everyone happy, lately with the influx of people, many people are getting the impression I'm some kind of listcop & that I'm something that I'm not. I have NEVER done or said anything to intentionally hurt anyone, but regardless, I still get very nasty notes from uninformed people who think I'm on some power trip. I have kept a lot of whats gone on in the past few months to myself, because I didn't want to perpetuate any negativity. But I do want to explain now some of what I have been subjected to behind the scenes. Most of these situations stem from the same scenario. A new list person writes me asking for something, be it getting a message to Jewel(in Noah's recent case) or specific tapes they want. I simply cannot fulfill every request. When I say this to the person, they end up hating me & thinking I'm on a power trip, which I assure you, I couldn't care less about. Tonight I recieved a few notes from people who think I'm trying to screw them out of the JS tapes after reading Mikes post. First of all, I haven't said a single word to the list in months regarding bootlegs. I agree it'll be a shame if we can't tree the 4th JS tape because of it, but there is no longer anything I can do or even want to say about it. I simply followed through & did everything I promised to do at the time. I can no longer personally fulfill JS tape requests. The JS Tapes were NEVER intented for infinate distribution. Like I said after the leaf signup was over, "its now up to leafs to help new people". To give you a concrete example of what I'm trying to say, I want to share a recently recieved letter from Noah. You may remember Noah as the guy wanting to contribute to the "JS Thanksgiving" book a week or so after Jewel already had it. I even tried to privately & publicly straighten out the situation with Noah, but this is what he has to say about that: <> Anyway, at first I took this with a laugh, but its not the first time, so others must agree. I've spent a LOT of my free time answering EVERY letter I get & I always try to be helpful if I can. But I've gotten some other very "non-EDA" like letters from listmembers who feel I owe them something. I'm really getting sick of it. So I'm going into permanent lurk mode for the foreseeable future. I'll be happy to respond to email & I welcome any private correspondance. I'll still make sure Dan gets the tapes for the "definitive Boston" tree & I'll try & put something together for after Xmas if possible. Mike will keep you informed about that. I've never intentionally tried to hurt anyone. If I ever offended anyone reading this, my apologies. I've gotten a lot of positive feedback too & I've appreciated all of it. I've just tried to make a valuable contribution to the list & follow through with Jewel & Lenedra's wishes. With that comes a lot of wierd shit like this, which I'm finding less amusing every day. I've never felt the need to share any of this (other than with my friend Duff & with Mike, who gets his share too.) but I felt its time. I wish you all the best for the holidays. Alan ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Dec 1996 01:37:53 -0600 From: Ashe Mayfair Subject: NJC: !!!!!!! Now this is just WAY TO NEAT!!!! I picked up the Fiona Apple CD the other day and have been listning to it (it's really a great CD, highly recomended) So last night I put it in my CD-Rom and as I start to open my CD player program.. this Sony thing pops up. At this point I'm trying to talk on IRC so I figure I'll mess with it later. I click the cancel botton and go on. So tonight I put the CD in after listing to the old No Doubt CD (the self-titeled one, which BTW is pretty damned good too) for a while, and set out to figure this thing out. So I hit the install button... well the damned install EXE lockes up on me twice.. I decide to just go look at what was on the CD. Well there I find all kinda neat stuff like movies and such. I get the install EXE to work from there. So now there is this kewl Fiona Apple program on my computer. Now I've got the Shadowboxer vid (with this HUGE screen for a .mov, I looked at the poroperties for it and it was something like 56mb *yike* good thing it's on the CD), alla the pics from the booklet and a bio of her and all kindsa neat stuff. And to imagian they sell this CD for no more then $10 anywhere I go. Now, I just wonder why I had never heard that this was on the CD. Did it say is on a sticker that goes on that plastic wrap or somthing (I got mine used so I wouldn't have seen any such stickers). I wonder that, and I wonder why more CD's don't do this... I would LOVE to have something like this for a Jewel CD. I would be even more happy then I am now. Well, just figured I would share. Hope I'm not just being a dummie and not knowing about this. Yeah, whatever pal----- This judgemental individual needs to entertain a little visit from the EDAs I do believe..., however--this is the only negative comment I've ever heard about Jewel from the Hatfield dwelling, usually the Hatfields' having nothing but praise for Jewel!! Here's something from a "Trasher"(Garbage): From: "David Oswald" >Hey all...Lets see, the current debate bout liking a band because of the >singer... >I think the tunes Supervixen and Stupid Girl(Which the band generaly refer >to as stupid boy or stupid person) pretty much sums up this topic...garbage >knows that the real fans of the music will be around long after Shirley's >Eighteith birthday...Much like Liz Phair, Poe, Tori, and Jewel...women in >rock know the best way to get someones attention is through their looks and >attitudes...once people are paying attention to them..they can start saying >what they want... I thought you would be interested in this--EDAs will be around long after Ms. Kilcher's eightieth b-day right? Right!! The EDAs are so much more of a family than the "others" I'm familiar with: *Garbage--the "Trashers" mainly talk about upcoming shows and Garbage "rarities". *Juliana Hatfield--the people strictly talk about Juliana's musical ability. *Liz Phair--this list is practically non-existent; I've received one post in the last month, Liz will be having a baby around Christmas. *Poe--the "Angry Psychos" are a very aggressive group, ask "Cornflake Girl", these people are ruthless, there is so much violent tension lately with them. The EDAs deal with everything but always focus on Jewel (her life, her brilliant mind, and the proficiency of her music). One thing about Jewel that I want to add real quick is that, aside from her incredible and versatile voice, is that of her guitar playing. I know how great a guitar player Melissa Etheridge is and I've heard so many people say the same thing (she studied guitar I believe at a conservatory that I can't remember the name of), and I've heard many, many great players--Jewel blows most of them away. When Jewel played here in Anchorage earlier this year, I was just mesmorized with her mastery of the guitar (I was sitting in the front row), I literally was in a daze after the show. It was the best show I've ever seen (I've seen everyone imaginable here, from the biggest bands around to the smallest). Everything was perfect: her vocals, guitar, public relations, humor, sound, everything--all from this Angel with her guitar--all alone on the stage for 2.5 hours!! Incredible!! Well, I've been a guitarist for 13 years now and I've studied every type of music--Yngwie was my inspiration--and he is a master of the guitar--so I am a very reliable source when I say that Jewel is a guitar prodigy!! A lot of her music on POY is easy to play (it's so melodic), but "live in concert" she blows me and 98% of all guitarists out of the room!!! I just wanted to give credit to something that isn't really talked about when talking about Jewel. I better go, sorry to keep you--I know how many posts you lovely Angels receive!! EDAs are the tightest, most loving, intelligent, humorous, coolest, and dedicated family in the land--I challenge anyone to prove me wrong!! Good Night Angels, Shawn P.S. OK, I'm ticked and I'm sorry but it's time to vent on this. I know that 99% of you out there are not writing this shit to Alan, but to the 1% that have....WRITE ME!!!! Everyone of you that wrote nastily to Alan after my post write me and I'll set your asses straight! (Actually, this and my post last night SHOULD tell you most of the picture....if it don't, then you need to get educated) This is to that 1%. Listen up...Alan has donated...DONATED (read that, FREE TIME!!) HUNDREDS of hours of his time to this list in putting together the JS Tapes that were, quite frankly, *initially* intended ONLY for people who were *on this list* PRIOR to the event of JewelStock. Like I said, the event and the tree were gifts from Jewel & Lenedra for support THIS LIST has given to her (them) in the past. Not the present, not the future. When we mentioned to Lenedra the fact that it would be impossible to only distribute them to folks on the list prior to the event, she agreed and told us to do what we need to, but she stressed to keep the tapes on the list. In conunction with that is the Bootleg CD fear. It IS OUT THERE!!! They do fear that, but also felt obligated to give us the JS Tapes after the initial promise. I guarantee you that Lenedra has gotten some shit from Atlantic Records for letting us have them. We know this for a fact. But she loves this list so much, she wanted to do what was right and she did. Still, we had rules and regulations that had to go along with the distribution. It was Jewel's MANAGEMENT', NOT ALAN NOR I, that directed that the tapes be PROTECTED as best as could be. To do that, MANY people on this list were consulted via PHONE CALLS (money costing phone calls) on what would be wise. The general concensus was that the tree be a quick, over & done with event. The fact that subsequent dubbings be a 3rd generation copy was decided on with consultation with Lenedra to assure that if a bootlegger gets copies, that they will be 3rd generation or lower. I ASSURE you that the 3rd generation copy of the JS Tapes far and away BLOWS AWAY any other Jewel concert tape out there. In case you doubt a bootleg fear, I posted alot on this in the past, but rest assured that Alan and I were both approached with offers for our master tapes, and they weren't small offers. We had a job to do and it was a daunting task. ANYONE on this tree can get the tapes. You just have to ask, perhaps wait a bit until someone offers to make copies for you. I myself have spent thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours on the projects of JewelStock, and the JewelStock tapes tree, all for the good of this list. MANY others have also DONATED their free time in many list projects. Those 1% of you that are ticked off can afford to spend a little waiting time and little effort into getting the tapes and other niceties that this list enjoys, ALL FROM A VOLUNTEER STATUS!!! No one does this as a job, they are donating time. I'd write more, but I think I've made my point and have to go to work. I'm sorry if this isn't as precise an EMAIL as I usually try to write, but I didn't have time to edit it, and frankly, I don't want to, anger is good sometimes. Last vent: You 1%....grow the fuck up and EARN what you want. Don't shit on one of the true angels on this list because you are lazy or don't understand the situation which was clearly spelled out in my post last night. Like I said, anyone on this list can get the tapes. Hey, I get to followup to myself: > > >Here's an easy, no-cost way to help a child at the Holidays; > > Can anyone confirm or deny this? It has all the markings of a hoax, Well, I missed the link on the HMCo page somehow: To participate all you need is a free minute or two to post a message on this site and, like the young boy in The Polar Express, the willingness to truly believe in the spirit of the season. For every 25 messages received, HMI will donate a copy of The Polar Express or another children's book to a children's hospital. The Polar Express is one of the HMInteractive titles. Under the Polar Express topic is the info about the giveaway, known as the Polar Express Share the Spirit Campaign. I will note that the instructions use a FORM to send the message, not just a simple mailto: link. So, anyone interested in participating, fire up that browser. :) Ray Wong PO BOX 6163 negativl@best.com, negativl@netcom.com Hayward, CA 94540-6163 Member #11537, Deborah Gibson International Fan Club Co-Founder and Charter Member, Sutton Foster International Fan Club ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Dec 1996 08:36:45 -0800 (PST) From: Barnabus Heckabus?
