Problem is, smack dab in the middle of the midwest, there is nothing. Kansas City would probably be the closest. Like I said. Nothing. ;) Nashville would have some meaning as some of the work for the next album was done there. Not that it's any skin off my teeth. Personally, I can wait a few months until the album is released and (hopefully) the full tilt touring begins again (hopefully paying a little more attention to us mid-coasters than before) to meet everybody. I had a great time speaking to you and can't wait to meet any EDAs in LA (on Dec. 20 when I fly out to meet GraywolfLA). Going to see Melissa Etheridge and to escape the 1.5 feet of snow up here. I had my pictures developed from the CT show and I'm planning on scanning them. Can anyone give me info on how to download them on a homepage. I'm working on one. I got some great photos (probably not as good as Ted with the camera he had, but very clear). It reminds me of the show and her comments for each particular odd stance. Got some great ones with her smiling. Just want to say "Hi MOM" if you read this. That's my adopt a newbie mom. We got to meet each other in CT. Take care EDAs. Who was the EDA near William Li that held the sign "We can't hear you?" I didn't get to meet you. I was behind Ted. Just thought I'd temporarily de-lurk to share my top ten favourite albums of last year with you all. Enjoy! TALIESIN'S TOP TEN *********************************** 10. Rarities, B-Sides, and Other Stuff---Sarah McLachlan While Sarah is one of my favourite artists, I tend to list compilation albums lower on the list, mainly because a:they tend to be spotty in quality, and b: they tend to repeat songs that I already have. Well, While b-sides has some great tunes on it, others left me cold. The Rabbit in the toilet Re-mix of Possession is, in my opinion, the biggest waste of time I've heard in a long time. And the other dance tracks (especially "Into The Fire", which I ignored on the Vox single) just don't thrill me. Also, I have most of the other tracks (though I realise many people don't). However, the songs I didn't have ("Song For A Winter's Night", "Full Of Grace") are *SO* great, that they alone merit inclusion on this list. Also, some of the repeat tracks ("Gloomy Monday" for one) are well worth having twice. Now, if I could only get the video to run smooth..... 9. Call To The Tribes---Chaotic Good Ok, so most of you folk haven't heard of this group. Well, if you're into socially concious folk music, then this group's for you! This, their second tape, is worlds ahead of their debut, and it deals with the Earth, Ecology, Spirituality, Sexuality.....all on the first side! The harmonies are incredible, and principal songwriter Sharon Good has crafted some wonderfully melodic songs. For more info, write to KaoticGood@aol.com ....and be sure to tell them that Taliesin from Balefire sent you! :) 8. Test For Echo---Rush Their first album may be older than half the people on this list, but Geddy, Neil, and Alex can still rock with a vengeance. Test For Echo may be their most energetic outing since "Moving Pictures". I would dare say that there isn't a bum track on here. Fantastic. 7. The Gathering---Dragonwyck This is a band local to the Akron/Northeast Ohio area. When I picked up their debut EP earlier this year, I was blown away! It has been a long time since gothic heavy metal of this caliber has been heard, and even longer since it came from the US. Following Iron Maiden's triumphant return to form last year with "The X Factor", this cd gives me hope for the future of heavy metal. 6. Songs in the Key of X---Various Artists This cd suprised me. While I originally bought it for the Nick Cave and Mark Snow tracks, the rest of this album proved to be equally great. Even bands that I tend to avoid (Filter, P.M. Dawn, Soul Coughing) turned in mind-blowing contributions. And even though Elvis Costello has never been a favourite (except for a few songs like "Veronica"), his song with Brian Eno "My dark Life" is one of the album's standout tracks. The hidden tracks are a gas, as well. ;) 5. October Rust---Type O Negative What most of the dark, brooding goth/metal bands don't get is the fact that you need to be more than morose or artificially mysterious to succeed like Type O Negative has done. You need good songs and an adventurous spirit. Peter Steele's New York outfit returned with a vengeance with both of these qualities in 1996, releasing an album that both sounds great and stays with you. The songs have haunting melodies and unpredictable arrangements that are immeadeately accessable. The success of "Bloody Kisses" has allowed the band to take it's time in the studio,(not to mention allowing Peter Steele to quit his job with the New York Parks Service), and the production is flawless. The multilayered sound of October Rust is facinating to listen to, with each repeat bringing some new texture to the surface. And the cover of "Cinnamon Girl" is fun, too. 4. Tidal---Fiona Apple Fiona Apple makes me sick. She's an immensely talented songwriter, proficient at her instrument, source of the best debut album I've heard in years, and....nineteen. Argh!!!!!!!!! She's the musical equivilent of those obnoxiously talented gymnasts you see on the Olympics. Part of me, as a musician, would love to hate her. But, as a musician, I can't. This album is just too damn good. She's like an alternative Harry Connick Jr. in a way....blusy, jazzy, soulful, and captivating. The CD also comes with a bonus mulimedia track which features the video for her first single, "Shadowboxer". If you're into singer/songwriters, then check this woman out! 3. Bad Hair Day---Weird Al Yankovic It's been a long time since Wierd Al made my top of the year list. Usually, his albums have some great tracks, some good tracks, and some that are completely forgettable. Not so with "Bad Hair Day". Not only are the parodies fantastic, but my favourite song on here ("The Night Santa Went Crazy") is a Wierd Al original! There's not a bad song on here, and the polka medley (featuring all alternative songs) has to heard to be believed. 2. Spiritchaser---Dead Can Dance I've only been listening to Dead Can Dance for a little over a year now, but they've never failed to impress me. Their newest album represents a new direction for them, and they've pulled it off superbly. Their combination of world rhythms, harmonies, and haunting instrumentation carries you away to another world. The concert was great as well. 1. Load---Metallica I've been hearing this band for 13 years now. Their debut, "Kill Em All", failed to impress me, mainly because it reminded me (and still does) too much of bands like Diamond Head, Angel Witch, Motorhead, Gaskin, Sledgehammer, and a plethora of other New Wave Of British Heavy Metal Bands. They then took a brilliant direction with "Ride the Lighteneing", perfecting their vision on "Master of Puppets". After the largely forgettable "...And Justice For All", they decided to continue to grow and evolve, releasing their first post-Dimond Head album titled simply "Metallica" (a.k.a. "The Black Album"). I told some dismayed metalheads then that the "Black Album" was my favourite metallica album, mainly because they finally found a totally distinctive sound. Well, they've continued in a similar vein on "Load". While it is just as melodic and progressive, it is also more raw than its predecessor. This stripped down sound doesn't detract from the brilliant songwriting, however, and cuts like "Until It Sleeps", "2X4", and "Mama Said" shine. (Check out the slide guitar on that last song.....) This album just goes to show that Metallica doesn't follow trends....they set them. While a plethora of metal bands are scurrying to copy what Metallica and Slayer did eight years ago, Metallica isn't afraid to blaze their own path. Well, there it is. Now, if you disagree with my selections, then.....write your own list. Believe me, it's fun! (Try to give reasons why you put what albums where...it's more exciting than just another list, in my opinion...) Loden" Subject: NJC: Midwest EDA gathering I guess everybody has there own boundries for the midwest. Mine has always been the Dakota's, MN, WI, IN, IL, MI, IA, and NB. There is the possibility of Ohio, but not Miissouri, Kansas, or Kentucky, and deffinitly not TN. But that is just my opinion, not the only one. So I think what we are going to maybe have to do is split the midwest up. That would make it easier to set up locations, and also would cut travel time for almost everybody. How about making groups of MN, WI, and the U.P. of MI one group. ND, SD, and NB another. IA, IL, and MO a third group. IN, OH, and the lower penninsula of MI a fourth. Then eda's of each group can set their own places that is best for each group. Take a look at a map and tell me what you all think, and please remember that it's just an IDEA(a darn good one:). What ever the deal may end up to be, we should figure something out soon, so people can make plans to go to them/it while they are home on X-mas break. Hope I didn't step on any toes with my boundries, sorry if I did. Hope to hear from youse guys soon. [...] She hasn't been in any Southern city for quite some time, although she has played Nashville and Atlanta a few times. If she comes to Nashville to mix her new album (like she did for Pieces of You), then that could provide an opportunity to play there, as well as Atlanta and Birmingham, where her radio support is flagging 'cause the Hot AC station went Lite AC, and the traditional-sounding "You Were Meant For Me" hasn't turned up on the modern rock station, nor the Hot ACs in Tuscaloosa and Anniston. A few stops here and up the Atlantic coast are in order to shore up support in the Southeast, which is more Jewel-friendly than you think. - -- Andrew "/Come on baby, drive south/In that old blue bus/" Vernon avernon@scott.net ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 9 Dec 1996 23:50:53 -0600 (CST) From: Andrew Vernon Subject: Re: "When You Smile" Bootleg Cd Ray, > > I knew Jewel won't be get any proceeds from it. Thanks. I can re-format the artwork in exchange for a copy, or there are a number of other things I can do. I don't have any material on tape yet to trade, so I have to offer creative services instead. In other words, if Jewel doesn't get the money, nobody should. We have already seen that Jewel is more than happy to give to her listeners. Because her generosity is for _us_, not the racketeers, we should destroy the market value of any illegeally-produced recording by either refusing to buy it, or by obtaining a couple of discs and treeing it Redwood-style. Hell, we can even draft a GNU-style copyleft. - -- Andrew Vernon avernon@scott.net ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V1 #851 ***************************
