As usual, Igor brilliantly says everything that needs to be said in an entertaining and heartwarming anecdote. I was one of the people who responded to her first post. It was not a flame or "hate mail." I mailed her with as much love and concern as I extend to anybody. I certainly did not call her an "airhead." I, of course, wanted to disuade her from buying either of these CD's. I did not demand her not to buy them, I instead asked her. I know, of course, that she does not have to listen to me, and if she were to not take my advice I would not be upset with her; unhappy, yes, but not upset. There is one thing I would like to point out in Vanessa's letter. She said, >If you did not have the information that I was requesting, you >did not need to do anything. You especially did not need to >download your opinions on me. Firstly, it is important to remember that this is a public forum. When you make a statement in a public forum you invite other people to comment on it. It should also be remembered that every opinion must be respected, no matter how much we disagree. It is the least we can do if we expect others to respect us. In this I'm referring more to the people who responded to Vanessa with something less than respect. Secondly, I did feel I had to do something. Last Thursday there was a snowstorm that covered the area. It is a personal tradition of mine to enjoy every snowfall as soon as I can -- which often means slipping on a pair of boots and jacket quickly and running out into a near blizzard at two in the morning. Well it was only about eleven-thirty this time. As I was walking down a street, a different route than I normally tend to take through my neighborhood, I heard a dog barking. As I approached one house I saw there was a puppy less than one year-old tied to a tree. The poor guy was obviously freezing and barking to be let in. I looked at the house and saw no lights on other than a television in a bedroom. What was I to think? I came to the decision that I could not just walk on hoping the owner would soon take their dog in. I began to walk up to the dog who, once he saw me, began barking very loudly at me. I backed away from the dog slightly, talking to him, trying to build up trust. Just then the owner of the dog opened the door. I was very much standing on his property, wearing a black trench coat, in the middle of the night. But I simply told him what I was thinking, "I was worried about your dog." He was upset and offended at me, some crazy guy walking around in the middle of the night accusing him of animal cruelty. He said he was just coming to take him in and proceeded to unhook him from the chain. I walked away glad that the dog wasn't still outside. Sure, the guy said he was about to take him in; but maybe he wasn't? If I hadn't done anything he would've just let the dog freeze. I could've got myself arrested or shot at for doing what I did. But what I wanted happened, and if I had just kept walking and not done anything where my opinions weren't invited then that dog might have stayed out there all night -- I couldn't let that happen. Oh, and one more thing. (Sorry to put it way down here.) Like I mentioned to Vanessa before, a tape was made of Salvation and a tape will be made of When You Smile. If she doesn't mind not having a 100% perfect, digital version then she can get Salvation right here. I'm surprised no one has offered to copy it for her yet. - ---pat (...who is not, and will not be lulled by the siren's song of AOL) "Emancipate yourself from mental slavery." -- Bob Marley ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 9 Dec 1996 08:58:09 +0200 (IST) From: Reggev Michael Subject: Re: NJC: Re: thanks for the welcome On Fri, 6 Dec 1996, Alexander Stamou wrote: > On Thu, 5 Dec 1996, martin bruce wrote: > > > well i am happy to say that i have been recieved even though i am new. > > i would like to thank Alexander and Reggev for re-ing me. > > My friend Michael would prefer it if you called him Reggae or Jamaicaman. :) > > /Alexander "aliments pour animaux" Stamou > Alex, ... I have failed you. In your absence I guarded your throne with all my strength. I stood in front of it but never dared to sit in it. Only once, I did lift the seat and used it, but I swear that I never sat on it. The kingdom is in turmoil. The Harris Harem is totally out of control. In your absence I did my best to pleasure them all. I never feared them but their power was overwhelming. When I told them they had no chance of winning and that I would lick them in the end, Amy took my words and twisted them to mean something evil. Selena is flying around in a Batgirl costume. At least thats what I think it is. She is wearing a black leather hood over her face and the rest of her is also covered in black leather with brass buckles and staps. Maybe she thinks she is Cat Woman. Rachel has built an igloo in MA, pretending she is in Alaska. She isn't in that igloo along because the ice is melting faster than a vanilla Dairy Queen. Prince Dean has only graced us with his presence a few times. A new Harris has surfaced. He calls himself Tom. Did you make a mistake during your imprisonment at the slave camp turkey farm. You did say you had to do it the old fashioned way. In your haste, did you sire this Tom. Your Harem has been buzzing with anxiety, hoping to see what new techniques you learned with those turkeys. You may have heard that I might be getting a new doll for my collection. You never even came to play with my talking Pee-Wee Herman doll. You should see what happens when you pull the string. I let the Harris Harem play with it but afterwards I had to replace his torn suit. Those girls are so ruff with their toys. They probably were looking for the batteries. Welcome back King Dennis. In light i am shallow and emotionless walking through the day with my only joy being the knowledge that the night would come It would come and take me away from the empty light of the day. People walk by me in the halls, Happy, energetic people, living their lives in the light. I walk with a tired expression on my face, Dark cicles under my eyes make my white skin look pale. My green eyes are dimmed by the light shining down from the window. I love the dark. I need the solitude that only the night can bring I am truely alone in the dark. It is the only time i allow myself to cry to feel any true emotions. It is the only time i feel real and know that i am alive, not just another empty soul sleeping in their bed, dreaming shallow dreams. Ooh... A scary look into my mind huh! You got two signatures, I'm jealous. But I would advise being careful when you wash it anyway, because it's possible that both won't last. I had been carying my shirt, (after taking it off in the middle of the mall to get it signed), and walked out to the car with it still in my hand. Now, there is more blue ink on it than just the word Jewel, it kind of got a little smeared. I'm not sure if that marker she was using, is permanent or not. Maybe the ink was just not dry enough yet, but really it shouldn't have mattered. Either way be careful. I like being at the small concerts better, when you know that all the people around you are there soley for Jewel, and she knows that too, and therefore can be more personal with us. Then again, any performance of her's is great. (As was yesterday's). -KAH > They gave her a nice limo, though, which she said she found very embarassing (getting out of a limo at a mall) and then joked about the security guards SLOW drive through the mall thinking he was hot stuff because he had Jewel in the back. She played several new songs for the first time. Two of her four CDs are out of print and very rare. She did songs from both of them. All the songs started with nice intro stories. She is very funny. Both acoustic and electric guitar were played besides harp. A new instrument she added was piano. Not just any piano, but a one foot high toy upright piano with a mike stand behind it. It sounded like the bells the Salvation Army Santas ring. It was hilarious. Larry got permission to tape her on DAT. I'll let him fill you in on that. The audience loved her and brought her back after a thunderous applause. Cindy and her boyfriend Paul Williams, came out and talked to us for almost a half hour. Paul BTW is the publisher of Crawdaddy magazine, Writer of 4 books on Bob Dylan and several Sci-Fi books. I also found out that he was in the Plastic Ono Band backing John Lennon and Yoko Ono. He looks like a young Andy Warhol. Larry and I are planning on seeing her again Jan 17, Highland Grounds, LA. We would love to have some SoCal EDAs join us. Paul told someone that we were on the Jewel mailing list and a performer that had played at Java Joes came over. I was still talking to Cindy so Larry will have to fill you in on what was told. It seems that on Nov 22 while we were hoping Jewel would show up at the Rugburns show at the Belly Up, she was at Java Joes and sat in with this person. She did two songs. The performer telling us this gave Larry her CD so he should be able to tell you more. Cindy has a new web site. http://www.geocities.com/Paris/1418/Cindyl.htm Igor ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 9 Dec 1996 21:31:45 +1000 From: leob@kuentos.guam.net (Leo and Donna Babauta) Subject: Re: Another look into my twisted mind. To follow up on Igor's post: The dat of Cindy Lee came out great, email me privately if you would like to have a copy of the show. Y'all should read Paul's revived "Crawdaddy" -- it is a music-lover's jump-start. I haven't had the chance to listen to the cd that jewel's duet partner gave me, so that will have to wait a little while. One of the songs on the cd was *inspired* by Jewel and Steve Poltz; I'll tell about it later in the week. Meanwhile, WHO HAS THE JEWEL/JAKOB DYLAN DUET ON TAPE? Please let me know! A great way of preserving autographs on T-shirts is to wait till the ink is totally dry and then spray the front and back of the fabric with Scotchguard. A couple of coats should do it. This prevents water from getting into the fabric, and prolongs the life of the markings. This trick also works for the silk-screen stuff on most shirts. - -- | Greg Dunn | "Information is not knowledge; | | GregDunn@aol.com | knowledge is not wisdom; | | GregDunn@indy.net | wisdom is not truth." | | http://members.aol.com/gregdunn/ | Frank Zappa | ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 9 Dec 1996 09:55:38 -0500 From: bond@bucknell.edu (lauren bond) Subject: HFSmas Holiday Nutcracker (12/8) Hey everyone!!! It was so great meeting more EDA's! (my tally of EDA's I've met is up to 6 now, including the 5 others who were at the concert last night :)) Jon Reid, Crunch, (thanks to you two for giving me a ride!! :)), Anand, Peter Jones, and Patric Oesterheld!!! okay, about the show... 1. Emmett Swimming- Okay, he has potential... the crowd was pretty into him... 2. Sebadoh- Besides the song that they play on the radio, I wasn't too impressed with them.... the other bands liked him though (the lemonheads and the Bloodhound gang kept saying "let's hear it for Sebadoh!!!!" but I dunno... maybe others liked him... 3. Lemonheads- they were pretty good, I like them, but maybe it was because I was anticipating Jewel's set that was coming up next, but their set seemed to go on forever!! 4. JEWEL!!!!- okay, I had mixed feelings...I was kinda disappointed that she didn't do more of her softer songs... Crunch has the "official" setlist, he was the one who wrote it down... I mean, what she did was fine, but last year at the HFSmas, her entire set was solo, and she stood on the little island in the middle of the floor. It was so cool... no one had a clue who she was but they were all captivated with her by the end of her set. She interacted with the crowd as if she was in a club, inviting 2 guys to come up on stage and try to dance faster than she could yodel. (she won, of course :)). this year, it was more impersonal, ya know what I mean? I dunno, I haven't seen her since the HFStival, maybe she was trying to appeal to the audience since it is much of the same audience that was at the HFStival (the famous frisbee incident), but i dunno... it was still a good set, but being my 4th jewel show, I would have to say that it just isn't the same as her first three.... but it was okay, I had fun... The highlight of the night by far was when she did a duet with the Wallflowers :) they sang that song "the same black line that's drawn on you is drawn on me, and that's drawn to you..." etc etc. (sorry I don't know the name of the song :( probably "Black line"? Anyway, I loved it :) 5. The Bloodhound Gang- sucked. 6. Social Distortion- too loud... I didn't like them much... 7. the Wallflowers- the best set of the night- the crowd FINALLY stood up and more people were dancing. I loved Jewel's duet with this band :) 8. Sheryl Crow- She didn't seem really into her music... maybe she didn't want to be there? I dunno... it was a pretty good set tho... I did enjoy the night, but the lineup was much better last year-Jewel, Garbage, Oasis, the Toadies, Dave Matthews Band, Porno for Pyros, etc. (and jewel was phenomenal then, too... she was good this year, don't get me wrong, only different... I wanna see another show that she headlines...) Yeay I'm glad I went home to see this show! :) now I can say I've been to one concert in the past 4 months instead of none, and I don't have to say "the last time I saw Jewel was during the frisbee incident at HFStival in JUNE!!!" :) yeay! okay, so that's the scoop! see ya! This is so weird! My best friend from junior high is named Tirzah (it's from like Exodus, right? She knew the verse and everything; it's the name of a kingdom and also of a princess, or something like that). I almost brought this up before, thinking there was a possible connection here, but I was like, Nah! That is nuts! She thought she was the only person in the world with that name. Btw, even though I haven't seen her in like 3 or 4 years, she is still one of the coolest, most original people I have ever met in my life. :) Becca ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 9 Dec 1996 10:08:31 -0500 (EST) From: Rebecca A Smith Subject: Re: The origin of THIRZA Oops, sorry for this post, but I forgot to ask... Scotchguard does wear off in the wash, btw, so you may need to reapply after every so many washings... Personally, this has always been sort of a dilemma for me... I want to preserve a shirt once it's been autographed, but any wearing (and subsequent washing) is going to result in, at best, some slight fading, and of course, the shirt itself will still wear out (slowly). I've taken to trying to get 2 of any shirt, so I can keep one nice, but A) it's wasteful, I know, and B) do I wear the autographed or non-autographed shirt? :) Ray Wong PO BOX 6163 negativl@netcom.com, negativl@best.com Hayward, CA 94540-6163 Member #11537, Deborah Gibson International Fan Club Co-Founder and Charter Member, Sutton Foster International Fan Club ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V1 #849 ***************************
