I love Jewel--her personality, her lyrics, her voice. I enjoy listening to her music, and one of my favorite pasttimes is to collect more and more of Jewel's performances. Each one is unique and special. I am sure many of you EDA's will agree. When someone posted the information about the 2 bootleg cd's, I was very interested in obtaining them. I know Jewel won't see a dime, and frankly, I don't care, and frankly I don't think Jewel will care. Somehow she doesnt strike me as being hung up on money. The person who posted the info also said to check local cd stores and the internet for more information. Well, i tried both, and had no luck. So I asked fellow EDA's to help. Much to my dismay, I received several "hate mails" (of varying degrees of hate). I do not appreciate the moral speeches, nor the ethical aspects. I am not here to judge anyone, and no one is here to judge me. If you did not have the information that I was requesting, you did not need to do anything. You especially did not need to download your opinions on me. Some one even called me an airhead. Enough said. Like I said when i first rejoined the list.. things have changed. Maybe now its not all for the better. From what i could remember, the list was a bunch of people with a common interest and a common goal of learning the most about our beloved Jewel. FG was a great performance, like she usually does with this song. then she really got the crowd going with LMJLMA, and ended on a high note with WWSYS, going into her little scat near the end, and holding out 'YOUR' forever that brought lots of cheers from the crowd. she pretty much went out with a bang. leah andreone didn't have much a stage presence, and i felt like she just wanted to do her four songs to start the show and get out of there. shawn colvin was really good, although most everyone had never heard of her and walked around during her set. patti rothberg got her radio song out of the way with the first song she played. the crowd was more receptive to her, although they walked around a bit, too. everyone stopped walking around when jewel came on. and i mean everyone. i'm just upset that they didn't have her up on the tv screen like they did with everyone else. maybe they technical difficulties or something. merril bainbridge barely held the crowd at all, but got eveyrone going when she played 'mouth' as her last song. EVERYONE sang along to that song. it was horrifying. sarah mclachlan came on to lots of cheers, and that was the first time i saw her new haircut. ack! i loved her hair the way it was. oh well. but her songs are mellow, and most people weren't expecting that and were basically a bit more noisy than they should've been. when she would hold out a note, they would cheer wildly as if the song was over, but it wasn't. bleh. and when she played 'Possession' on the piano, i heard some girl comment 'aren't there drums on this song?' oh well. but i would have rather seen sarah as a headliner in her own show than in this atmosphere. tracy chapman had a wonderful set, too. she started out with 'Fast Car', which got everyone jumping, then played two more mellow songs, which tamed the audience into a murmur. then she erupted into 'Give Me One Reason' waking the crowd up again. i thought that was going to be her a last song, but she came out with a great rendition of 'Bring Me To The River', that really got the crowd going, and tracy went out with a bang like jewel. susanna hoffs was watched more than merril and patti in the center acoustic stage, and got lots of cheers and people singing along with 'eternal flame', her last song. sheryl crow was okay. i didn't really know what to expect, but i was quite tired by the time she came on. i only got 5 hours sleep the night before, worked during the day, then came to the concert and was quite hungry but didn't feeling like forking over my money for MSG's overpriced food. so when sheryl came out, i wasn't as up as i was at the beginning of the show. her performance was good, and i was happy to see the normal sheryl as back, in terms of her hair and appearance. it was cut like it was when she went to bosnia, not the long stringy and make-up pasted look she had in her 'If It Makes You Happy' video. by the time sheryl was done, it was almost 12:30am, and the next train home would be at 12:35am. no doubt would have come on around 12:45am and mght have played for 45 minutes or so, there by ending the concert at around 1:30am. the next train after the 12:35am was at 1:35am, which to me was a bit too late by that time. so my girlfriend and i left after sheryl's set, caught the 12:35am train, got back to the elizabeth train station by 1am, then went to a diner, cause we were famished. i'd say i had a pretty good time, although the wait between performers was quite too long. i organized to have EDAs going to the concert to meet in front of the MSG box office at 6pm. well, i got there about 6:10pm to the sight of 200 people or so waiting in the area of the box office to get into the concert. ack! so, i walked back and forth in front of the box office area for 10 minutes hoping to attract the sights of any EDAs with my jewel t-shirt on, but nothing. i also had my tape recorder with me to tape the show (which came out shitty), and felt funny with it down my pants, so i decided to go in and just get situated. no one was searched going in, so i worried for nothing and could have just kept the recorder in my jacket pocket. oh well. but i'm sorry if EDAs were looking for me and couldn't find me. it just looked pretty hopeless to me with all those people there. that's it. a fun concert, but a bit too long. eric :) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 7 Dec 1996 17:43:24 -0600 From: Lehmann Subject: RE: NJC French Speaking EDA's cheese omlette. personally, i like to say "je joue avec les alumettes" better... or "je suis manger les pommes; je suis la vampire de pommes..." or "je t'aime, mais je dormie avec ton frere" or of course "je fais amour avec ton cousain..." tee hee. I'll have to leave Jewel's setlist to one of the other EDAs, as I left my pen in the car. Lady J's set was by far the best, however, even with the excess noise. You > especially did not need to download your opinions on me. Some one even > called me an airhead. Enough said. Mine won't be hate mail, just a short story. When I was only a young teen, An older friend of mine asked me if I wanted to take a ride with him. He said I could make some money. It was just before sunset and he already had his headlights on. As we road past the apple orchard, he turned off his headlights and pulled the car in between the trees. He had his back seat removed and filled with empty paper bags. He told me to start picking up as many apples that were on the ground as I could. Aren't we stealing from the farmer I asked. Nah, they are only going to rot anyway. In a short time we had the car jam packed with apples. Suddenly I heard a load bang. Someone just fired a shotgun at us. We jumped in the car and took off. The next day, we drove 60 miles up to Jersey City. On a street corner we set up shop. We sold all the apples in a very short time. No one asked us where they came from and no one cared because we were selling them so cheap. My friend gave a small share of the total, he kept most of the money. Even at the age of twelve, I had the mind of a business man. I drove my bike over to that same farm and went to talk to the owner. I asked him what did with all the apples that were just laying on the ground. I asked him if he would let me pick up the apples instead of letting them just rot. He really liked that I came and asked and made a deal with me. He told me about all the people that try to just steal his apples when all they had to do was ask. What the thieves would do is go after the easy pickings. They would shake the trees and pick up whatever they could see in the dark and let the rest get stepped on and bruised. He explained that his employees carefully picked only the best apples and did it with care. This was very important to him because all the apples he sold were packaged in boxes with his brand and label on them. It was important that his name was associated with quality. After JS, some EDAs simply asked Jewel about ditributing tapes of the events. She told us we could as long as we met certain conditions. All we did was ask and we were given the gift of her soul, tears, pain, love and joy on three wonderful tapes. For that gift, the least we can do is not support the thieves that are ripping off her music. It isn't about the money. Each one of those songs are her children. She gave birth to them. She gave them life. She at least deserves to do with them as she best feels. Just one more thing. You ask us not to judge you and you don't want to judge us. You are short changing yourself. This is exactly one of the beautiful things about this list. As an example, did you read that letter from "know-it-all, smarty-pants, still wet behind her ears" Liz. She asked us to give her our opinion or judgement on a letter she wrote to her sister Shelly. I had just had a big fight with my son Erik just before reading it. After reading her post, I went up to my son's room and told him that I loved him. That damn Liz keeps teaching me things. Thanks for reading this letter Vanessa. BTW, Vanessa is a beautiful name. My daughters name is also Vanessa. Rachel said we were five feet from Jewel. That's not accurate. We were TWO feet from her. :-) What I'd like to know is this: where was Dennis Harris? I was TOLD he was too sick to come, but then I get home and see that he's been happily posting away, not sounding sick at all. Here are possible theories why he didn't show: 1. He chickened out at the last minute because he knew I would be there. 2. He got a letter from Jewel Management "advising" him of the fact that his attendance would be "under-appreciated". 3. He had a secret rendez-vous with Jewel directly afterwards. (Nah). Well, I suppose time will eventually tell. Regarding the autograph signing afterwards, I would like to announce that I finally got my JewelStock shirt signed. You can imagine my dismay, however, when I realized she was signing it with a red pilot pen. One wash and that puppy's history! So when someone gave her a blue Sharpie, I said, "Jewel, I'm sorry but could you go over this with the other pen?" She did - so now it has two sig.s, even if one won't last :-). I feel bad for Stacey (StayMur) who wasn't able to go at the last minute. (Well at least you got to go to Jingle Ball!) Regarding the quality of the production, I think the radio station sponsor gets pretty poor marks. Jewel did not seem happy at all. Quite a difference from the show two nights earlier at Madison Square Garden I'm sure! They gave her a nice limo, though, which she said she found very embarassing (getting out of a limo at a mall) and then joked about the security guards SLOW drive through the mall thinking he was hot stuff because he had Jewel in the back. Final note - it took me two hours to get there. Well worth it. But it took almost four hours to get home! (due to the weather). I was not happy with Mother Nature for ruining our chance to get together at Mr. BB's house afterwards. Thanks guys! I had a lot of fun and it was great to meet Alan, Ted, Tessa, and everyone else and see Rachel and Paul again! I would love a copy of whoever's tape turned out good! Oh, and I haven't developed my pic.s yet but hopefully they'll be good and I'll make extras for those who want them.
