Hi Angels--- This is my very first post--I've just been kicking back and absorbing all the wonderful info you all have been supplying!! My first opinion of the "EDA" family was, I guess, kind of discouraging. Let me explain before I get flamed: the first few days seemed to be nothing but someone jumping someone for something (I must have came in at a bad time)!! Since then, I have found that this family of EDAs is a wonderful group of people, and I'm very, very proud to be "One"!! I've seen how you all support each other (the responses to Chels in her time of need are signs of true friendship), you all are just wonderful, did I say that already, well O.K., YOU'RE THE BEST, Jewel would agree and probably already did!! Oh, you all probably hate long posts so I'll get to the point. I joined a day after Thirza (she's incredible by the way!!), so I'm pretty new. My sister lives in the town right next to Homer--she knows Jewel's father Atz and her relatives due to working in the loan department of the bank where the Kilcher's have gotten loans for many years. I'm always asking her if she has seen them lately. Sorry to drag on---anyway I just might be the "most Northern EDA". I saw the post mentioning that there must be some Alaskan EDAs--all I know of is Rachel K and myself. I know that Rachel went to school with Jewel but I have never talked to her (mail me if you ever come to Anchorage Rachel)!! Would anyone want to adopt a couple of Northern newbies? We need guidance and nurturing!! If any of you guy's would like anything from Alaska please let me know at anytime, I'd be happy to help you out!! No strings attached or anything, I feel like the EDAs are family (already)! You must be 21 or over to enjoy it properly (at least in Texas)! ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 7 Dec 1996 13:11:49 -0500 (EST) From: Sketch Subject: Hi and tape trading Hi, I am a new person to this list, although not a new fan of Jewel's. I saw her last spring at the 9:30 Club in Washington where she just blew me away. Then I recently saw her in October at Farm Aid, where she was good, but it wasn't the same, being in such a large stadium and all. Anyway, I have one live show of her, when she opened for Neil in Georgia, and I was wondering if anyone would be interested in helping me acquire some more Jewel shows. I also have just under 500 hours of other bands of all types, so check out my bootlist on the web (the address is in the sig) and get back to me to trade. Thanks a lot. Porter > It was Dr. Oliver Sacks. He also wrote the book "Awakenings" which was turned into a movie with Robin Williams playing the Neurologist and Robert Deniro playing the main patient. It was all based on a true story of the "sleepy sickness syndrome" that had everybody in somewhat of a coma until Dr. Sacks tried a new drug on them and woke them up, some people had spent thirty odd years in their paralysis. Apparently they were conscious of the world around them during the disease but didn't have the ability to enact within the world, with the exception of reflex. Darn good flick. As far as "The Man Who Mistook His Wife Fore A Hat and Other Clinical Tales" as I recall the book was sectioned in two parts, 1) disabilities by brain dysfunction and 2) hyper abilities by brain dysfunction. It was interesting because in part two he talked about a patient that had some sort of Neurosurgery done, and afterwards had an enhance smelling capacity. He went on and on about what a completely different world it is with this. He went into detail about the different smells he would encounter in the day and what the intensity brought to his understanding if the subjects. He was very dismayed when the sensation was corrected during the next surgery. Other ailments that people preferred were Terettes syndrome. I don't know if any of you know what that is. It is a brain dysfunction in which the person may suffer from a various amount of ticks or twitches that are completely involuntary. Perhaps kicking his leg out rhythmically and unconsciously, or tilting his head in a violent manner for a few seconds and stopping again. One of the most interesting ticks one might suffer is oral. The person will involuntarily shout or say verbally abusive words or otherwise curse. It was funny because Dr. Sacks told of a woman that had this disorder and was in line at a bank. In front of her was a tall black man with a purple sweater on. Apparently she couldn't help but blurt out several times quite loudly "PURPLE NIGGER, PURPLE NIGGER" she was completely mortified and embarrassed. He turned around and said "if that's all you see, then I feel sorry for you." Or something to that extent. She was one of his patients that despised the "disease" but one man preferred it. He was a drummer and used his ticks to help him "go off" during a particular fill or roll. He had always considered his ticking a part of his personality and when he was given medication to stop the "ailment" he discontinued it on his own discourse. Alright one more story and I'm done. In the front half of the book it described a man who had lost the feeling in his right leg. In his bed at the hospital one night he called the nurse in quite panic stricken and in a quandary. He claimed someone had put a "dead leg" in bed next to him, and when he found it he freaked and threw it to the floor apparently throwing himself with it. Okay there's more stories but you should really read the book yourself. I think, however, some of what I referred to might be in a different book of Dr. Sacks. I read many of his but it was so long ago I can't remember what came from what... oh well.... -Bruce(the Doctor of Luuuuuv) bhartford3rd@juno.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 7 Dec 1996 14:29:40 -0500 From: ABershaw@aol.com Subject: From MrBB-Report From Meriden Square Mall Hi All, A good time was had by all in Meriden this morning. Rachel, Paul Kim & William Li dropped by our place this morning & we cruised over to the mall around 10:00am. I was very happy to meet (in person finally!) Amy(Wiggy2), Tegan Goodwin, Ted Berberian & Family, Jerry & a bunch of other EDAs(my memory on names is terrible, sorry!) The turnout was relatively small. I'd estimate about 300 people around the stage area at the most. Many more upstairs peering down but still somewhat intimate considering what a strange gig this was! Most people in the mall were disinterested shoppers going about their business. A surprise for us all was a short unnanounced acoustic set by Susanah Hoffs (former Bangle) which was nice, but plagued by some sound problems. She did 4 songs prior to Jewel's set. As I'm sure others will tell you, This is likely the closest anyone has seen Jewel perform in a long time! I hung out at the board myself, but all the above mentioned EDA's were mere inches from Jewel during her set. Jewel's set consisted of Cold Song, You Were Meant For Me, Morning Song, Deep Water, Who Will Save Your Soul & of course, Chime Bells. The crowd was enthusiastic throughout & Jewel signed many autographs from the little stage (a one foot riser, actually) following her set & then was wisked away...... Thats the scoop. I really enjoyed finally getting to meet more of you EDAs(you know who you are!). Wish the weather was better so we coulda spent more time together. Everyone wisely chose to get going before the storm picked up. Here's to many more opportunities in 97! I love my school, I love the parties, and I love my friends here, but the weather and the surrounding area is killing me. Spending winter in the frost/ rust belt is just about as depressing as it can get. I remember a thread that got started a couple of months ago about warm vs. cold living. Somebody mentioned SADS (Seasonal Affective Disorder) and I have recently found out that it is something I have to deal with on a day to day basis. I'm thinking anybody who lives anywhere from the mid-to southern U.S., and even you Aussies, have it better than you know. For all thos from Green Bay, Yougstown, Buffalo or any of these other cold and economically recessed areas, I sympathise with you. Jay P.S. Much of today's bit of dreariness has been brought to you courtesy of "Journey to Nowhere," I book I have just read from which Bruce Springsteen's Ghost of Tom Joad album is largely based. Read it. You will have quite a different outlook on this country. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 7 Dec 1996 14:45:02 -0500 (EST) From: Jay Notte Subject: Re: Crows Cavalry I've got to admit, Crounting Crows are a pretty awesome band. Don't put them down because they've had commercial success, they probably deserve it. I've been listening to the first album a lot since this whole thread started and thinking, "You know, these could be Springsteen lyrics." With the exceptions of Melissa Ethridge and, to a certain degree, Jewel, the Crows capture a lot of the spirit and emotion that existed is Springsteen's earier work "The rain King" could have EASILY been something off Asbury Park. Don't get me wrong, they're still a band with a lot to prove, but it is becoming more evident to me that they are a band that is unique among bands referred to as their peers. They can't be dismissed as a modern rock trendy little fluff band (Gin Blossoms) or lumped into that whole hippie, super-collegiate, frat-boy, "hey I like to smoke weed" category either (Blues Traveler, Rusted Root, Phish, Dave Matthews....). They are quite legitimate, and it's a shame if they don't make it. Jay P.S. I'd still like to see a shore-band like Joe Grusheky and the house-rockers or Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes step into the spotlight left behind by Bruce and the E. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 7 Dec 1996 14:51:41 -0500 (EST) From: Rebecca A Smith Subject: NJC: Maine EDAs?? Are there any EDAs from Maine other than Kirk and me? What about New Hampshire, New Brunswick, or other not too-awfully far away places? My dad's been bugging me to have a pool party since my freshman year of high school, so I'm considering having a Maine EDA type deal at my house next summer (if we actually get one next year!). I know it's way way way in the future, but it's just a thought, and not only am I curious to see if there are other EDAs in this state, it's something to look forward to. Warm thoughts...
