Hi y'all, Boy (man?) was I shocked this morning on the way to work. Having not yet heard "You Were Meant For Me" on a local radio station, I had figured I never will. (My favorite station used to play "Who Will Save Your Soul" constantly!!) The morning DJ & I know each other well. He is the one that supplied me with the "Who Will Save Your Soul" parody (The Olympic thing) that we put on the JewelStock Tapes. Anyway, all of a sudden I hear his voice (I won't have all the words right, working from my feeble memory here) "....new from Homer Alaska's most famous recording artist, Atlantic Record's Jewel".....and then they went into "You Were Meant For Me". However, something wasn't right....it wasn't the beginning of the song....it was more towards the middle. "???????", I thought to myself. After a good 30 seconds of YWMFM, I hear his voice again explaining how you can now get the CD Single of Jewel's new hit, AND the CD "Pieces of You" at yadda, yadda, yadda. It was a full commercial!! A full 60 second commercial! All just for Jewel!! Funny thing is, it was for a small CD shop (the area's smallest) that primarily deals in used CDs, but does have some new stuff too. Needless to say I was pleasantly shocked. Now, a question comes to mind. Outside of the San Diego area, has anyone ever heard a full one minute commercial SOLEY for the "Pieces of You" CD? Even a 30 second spot? I'm sure there's been commercials that included Jewel with other artists CDs, but Jewel alone? Even if this isn't a first, I'm still proud of lil' ol' Binghamton NY....my hometown. A line from "Painters" started it all off: 'they thought blueprints were too sad so they made them yellow.' btw, just before Jewelstock, I was listening to that song and decided to try it. Slight differences though... we usually print in grey instead of blue (still kinda depressing looking).. and yellow was too hard to read, so I changed them to green... so most of the contractors working on the Olympic Village this summer had to deal with greenprints. :) ...random tangent... I think this had a deeper affect on the construction workers than I thought. While some guys were putting up a canopy roof for a concert, their radio was playing WWSYS... no big whoop I though, it's just the radio... then POY came on... then Little Sister... hmm.... =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Chris Hoeh Office of Information Technology ch115@prism.gatech.edu Department of Operations/Engineering Atlanta, Georgia Georgia Institute of Technology =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ------------------------------ From: Chopped Liver Date: Mon, 18 Nov 1996 09:52:09 -0700 (MST) Subject: Re: books and digest On Sun, 17 Nov 1996, Katherine Davis wrote: > > thanks! > kerry/urusei > Is that like in Urusei Yatsura? Sort of. Kinda? Anyone? Folk songs are traditional songs usually done in ballad form like Greensleeves, Where Have all the Flowers Gone, etc. Pete Seager, Woody Guthrie, Burl Ives, and Joad Baez fit this catagory. As far as I can remember, neo-folkies (although not the term) started in the 60's with people like Joni Mithcell who wrote and sang ballads about contemporary times. I agree that throughing Jewel into the "neo-folkie" catagory is just convenience. She'll probably wind up in the amorphus catagory of "pop" singer. I've known Sean Hooks since I graduated from high school. Here was a kid who was praised as a hero at his high school for some antiheroic act that somehow involed the student magazine, I don't know all the details. For as long as I've known him, he's always seemed to want to be his own James Dean, some kind of rebellious character that the world can never quite understand. But nevertheless, a mutual interest in music and movies made us into friends. There was one thing I came to learn about Hooks later on: he is never wrong. You could say the sky is blue and he'll call it purple and defend that view until he dies. Another problem came with the fact that Hooks was book-smarter than many of the people we hung out with, which could be easily overlooked if he didn't keep reminding people of this fact. It then became apparent that Hooks was a guy that people either loved or hated for that very reason. For me, Hooks was somebody else who knew where I was coming from as far as college life, music, sports and movies were concerned, much like my best friend Burke. But granted there are time when I want to take Hooks' head and put it through a brick wall for some of the stuff he says. Does he infuriate me with it, yes. Is it annoying, yes. Is he still a good friend of mine, sure he is. While I may disagree with a lot of the ludicrous things that come out of his mouth, I respect his right to say them. He has the right to voice his opinion, as he is fully aware, just as much as I have the right to completely disagree with him in a somewhat calm and rational manner. Not by publicly humiliating him, however. It takes a lot more than some irrational comment to make me ever turn my back on a friend of mine. That is why, when I see him getting slammed repeatedly by various people on the list, I feel I should step in and cut off some of the barrage. I'd do it for any of my other friends. To give this whole thing some closure, I apologize to Greg Wilims and Mike Connell for getting out of line in my defense of Hooks, but I hope you two can understand the situation a little better. Finally, while he did have the right to voice his opinion, I whole-heartedly disagree with it. How many books someone's read or what kind of score they got on some government required, worthless test has nothing to do with their character. I'll end there, as I am hardly the one to be talking about moral virtues. Jay P.S. Silver Kat, awesome job on the JS tapes. All good things are worth the wait. Sorry to put any added pressure on you. They sound awesome. ------------------------------ From: James Judd Date: Mon, 18 Nov 1996 14:23:15 -0600 (CST) Subject: Re: yellowprints (was a NJC question) I enjoyed his mail much more than i have any of yours. A translation can provide you with the meaning behind the words, but you still have to hear the poem in it's native language to really enjoy it. And I think it's a good translation.
