Just a line or whatever that painted a vivid image in your head, where you instantly knew what she was talking about. Mine is the poem Las Vegas (Women who suck their cigarettes as if trying to give their hatred head -- or something like that, my friend Matthew has absconded with my CD temporarily!). I love that poem just because the image just bowls you over. In 4 short lines she invokes a powerful, complex feeling. Have a Great Monday, Angels! That was awfully sweet. Since I was still sick, I didn't do much of anything to celebrate the occasion, but I did get to talk to my mom and sister, and, unlike the past couple years, didn't have to spend my time doing school-work, so it all turned out OK. 2) Did anybody else see Fiona Apple on SNL? Was she not Awesome (even if they only let her do one song)? That was the first time I'd ever seen her perform, and I was impressed. I was also struck by how piercing her bright blue eyes are. The washed-out photo on the cd cover doesn't convey the effect, and every other picture I've seen of her was black & white. 3) I finally got the Patty Griffin cd, and after a couple listen-throughs, I'm liking it. More straight-folk than Jewel, and therefore (to me) less interesting, but still pretty good. It'll probably grow on me, too. The biggest question I'm left with is: why haven't I ever heard of her outside of this list? (aside from the obvious: 'cause I'm not as smart as Sean Hooks) (REALLY sorry about that, I'm trying harder to control myself, honest) 4) People have been posting "favorite book" lists. I'll have to give that some thought (which means you'll probably never see it) but I can say that right now I'm reading "Silas Marner" by George Eliot: It's for class, and I haven't read very much, but so far I would classify it as "very beautifully written, but awfully slow moving" (which is something in a 200 page book!) "Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets" by David Simon: I've been reading this off and on for several months. It's a very long (~600pp) non-fiction account of a year in the lives of 18 Baltimore homicide detectives, dealing with dozens (hundreds) of cases and all levels of procedure. By the end of the book, especially if you've been reading it as long as I have, you really feel that you know these cops and understand what they're trying to do. The tv show based on this book (titled, curiously enough, "Homicide") is also good, but it's become more and more about showcasing actors' ability and arty filmmaking and has lost the sense of immediacy and reality that makes the book (and the early episodes of the show) so good (merely my opinion, of course! I know that "Homicide" fans are at least as fanatic as EDAs, and I'd hate to get on their bad side). There, I'm caught up, and I came close to not saying anything negative. Next time maybe I'll score a perfect non-negativity 100! Trent Smith ------------------------------ From: Dan Stark Date: Mon, 18 Nov 1996 03:08:57 -0500 Subject: News list still up? Matter of fact while I was with her in the recovery room, she had me laughing in stitches. Anesthesia had something to do with it. She was telling me about WE NURSES. They are the ones that come into your room and say, "how are we doing today", or "are we feeling any pain today", or "we need to give a little sample for the lab". She read this story in a book about laughter used as medicine. One of these we nurses come in and hand the patient a cup for him to fill up with a urine sample. "We need a little sample". He decides to play a joke on the nurse. He fills the cup with apple cider. When she returns, he hands her the cup and asks,"how do we look today?" She holds it up to the light and says, "we look a liitle cloudy today". He reaches back for the cup and gives it a look himself and then says, "maybe if we just pass it through a second time?" With that said, he lifts the cup and drinks it down. Just as Kathy finished her story, a nurse walks in and says, "How are we doing with the pain. Do we need another shot?" Of course Kathy and I started laughing. The poor nurse didn't know what to make of it. This brings me to the real reason I am posting. Sean Hooks is like the patient in Kathy's story. You all think he is splashing us with his urine samples and it's been apple cider all this time. He is playing a game of chess with us. Many of you have played with him and have made some brillient moves. A few of you have put him in check with your first moves. But many of you missed his point and just decided to try to knock over his pieces. I personally like his letters. I don't agree with a lot of what he says. But he does provoke people into some good responses. The responses he gets are the real prizes for me. Just like many of you try to play air guitars with your favorite music, Sean is trying to be Lenny Bruce. But he needs a lot more practice. I am also a big fan of the Lenny Bruce school of comedy. Uncle Dirty was from that school. He was on Electra Records. In the New York area there is a comedian, Otto & George. They are very much like Sean. Otto is a wooden dummy and people want to tear its head off before the end of the show. George is the straight guy that tries to keep Otto from insulting the audience. Sean is both of these characters. If you ever get a chance to write him privately when he is not trying to be Lenny Bruce, you will find a interesting person behind that crown of THE MOST HATED MAN ON THE LIST. Sean, if you are reading this, why don't you get your girlfriend to post a letter to the list. You said she understood what you were trying to say and could probably say it better. Gays! For a minority that don't make children, where the hell are they all coming from. -Otto (Otto & George) Buying an album is such a sexual experience. You carefully pick it out at the store. They all look alike at first. Then you take it home with you. You get comfortable, dim the lights, smoke a joint, and then you undress the album. Touching it ever so gentle with just the tips of your fingers, you remove it from it's jacket. Then you carefully place it in the player. You take it for a spin. First trying to get a feel for things. Then you get intimate and listen to every word. Finally you try to say no to yourself and... -Uncle Dirty (a loose translation) As I was showering and soaping up, I felt something tickling my asshole. I started to feel around and could tell there was something in there. I get a hold of the edge of whatever it was and started pulling it out. In my fingers, I was holding what looked like a tapeworm. Oh my god, I got a tapeworm in my ass! Where is the head? If you don't get the head, it will grow back. I franticly started digging in there looking for the head. I'm in a panic and don't know what to do. In the mean time the water has cleaned off the worm and I can now tell I went nuts for no reason. The worm turned out to just be a long piece of undigested onion. -Hank W Igor P.S. I don't smoke ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V1 #785 ***************************
