For once on the face of the earth, let's not speak in any language; let's stop for one second, and not move our arms so much. It would be an exotic moment without rush, without engines; we would all be together in a sudden strangeness. Fishermen in the cold sea would not harm whales and the man gathering salt would look at his hurt hands. Those who perpare green wars, wars with gas, wars with fire, victories with no survivors, would put on clean clothes and walk about with their brothers in the shade, doing nothing. What I want should not be confused with total inactivity. Life is what it is about; I want no truck with death. If we were not so single-minded about keeping our lives moving, and for once could do nothing, perhaps a huge silence might interrupt this sadness of never understanding ourselves and of threatening ourselves with death. Perhaps the earth can teach us as when everything seems dead and later proves to be alive. Now I'll count up to twelve and you keep quiet and I will go. - -- Reprinted 100% without permission :) Translated to english by Alastair Reid. - -Floyd "Mean people suck" EDA Poetry Page: http://www.servtech.com/public/mschaeff/edapoems.html Under Massive Perpetual Construction :) ------------------------------ From: Sean Hooks Date: Tue, 12 Nov 1996 19:42:34 -0500 (EST) Subject: Jingle Ball=Sell Outs Date: 12-Nov-1996 07:25pm EDT From: Hooks, Sean SHOOKS Dept: STUDENT Tel No: TO: Remote INTERNET Address ( _IN%jewel@smoe.org ) Subject: Jingle Ball=Sell Outs I love Jewel's music. I have constantly expressed my desire for her career to follow the career path of Tracy Chapman. Sarah McLaughlin, though I don't like her music, except for "Possessions" which really is a very good song, is at least a credible true alternative artist. Leah Andreone is another Patti Rothberg, ie:one hit wonder No Doubt is commercial crap. Sheryl Crow is now though her first album is pretty decent. Z100, the enemy, the heinously mainstream, is sponsoring this concert. Do not call them asking to ply Jewel or YWMFM. If anything, call WNEW, the New York station that was playing WWSYS almost a full year before Z100 jumped on the bandwagon. I am not attending the Jingle Ball. I hold Jewel's live shows in great regard...when played at small venues in front of real fans not just the top forty z100 only knows WWSYS audience and when her set is not limited to barely a half an hour. I already saw that at MSG when she opened for Neil Young. Or at least I think I saw it I was so far away. The ad alone, the one with the cheesy tag line about the girls of yule, is repulsive. They play the one hit song from each artist while that annoying robotic voice announces the names of the performers. Aaaah! It's so frustrating to see so many Jewel fans jumping at this opportunity to support the mainstream and see a subpar performance in a venue that overwhelms her. Please, don't complain after you've seen the Jingle Ball and Jewel's thirty minute set and having to suffer through the rest of the show(that part is my opinion, I know most of the people on this list prob'ly disagree meaning that they actually like the other artists), just don't complain, you were warned. And lastly, nothing against Sarah, Tracy, or Jewel, they are all very legitimate performers and artists who I respect greatly even if I don't really like a lot of their music, except for Jewel, of course. I have Tracy Chapman's first album and have heard the new one, unimpressed, her first album is good for the first five songs or so and then it goes downhill. Sarah I just don't like her music, her voice, or her lyrics, but again, I respect her and her fanbase. And, those of you who know me know that I am a devout Jewel fan who sees her as perhaps the greatest live solo performer of our generation. Pearl Jam and Dave Matthews are groups, etc etc. So again, the Jingle Ball is sell-out, mainstream, corporate, MTV-inspired crap. It's an excuse for sixteen year old girls to yell for "I'm Just A Girl," and "If It Makes You Happy," and "Who Will Save Your Soul." God they prob'ly won't even know "Leaving Las Vegas" or "Fast Car." And it is for their boyfriends who will go to the concert and get nothing out of the it except for the pleasure of staring at Jewel's tits and Gwen Stefani's stomach and ass. Don't support it. Later, Sean Hooks PS: There is but one redeeming thing to those who are already locked into their tickets, Jewel will prob'ly do a Christmas song, one she's never done live before. It is also about Data, Knowledge and Wisdom. To get to my point, I first need to tell a story. David #1: You all know a David like this. He went to high school with me. His name was David Rosenberg. His name gives you a hint of his heritage. During Jewish holidays there was no question. As he walked through the halls with his books piled high as if they were his treasures, someone would always bump him so all his books would drop all over the hallway. He was a small defenseless guy. A lot of times it was done by friends of mine. You see, I grew up on the wrong side of town, in a Russian ghetto in New Jersey. We were a tough group of guys. Most of my friends had been on construction crews since the age of 12. We didn't take shit from anyone. On the school bus, he would be studying for a test as my friends were playing cards for money. I never saw him with a girl, but all my friends bragged about all the sex they were getting. We walked the halls with our James Dean leather jackets and our gangster tough guy additudes. David wore the best in nerd-wear. One day as we encountered David and my friends were about to apply some "hate", I told them to leave him alone, and go smack that football player around instead. I was instantly an outcast for defending him. Later on, I was in a class with him. Why was he so smart and I wasn't? Well at least I was the class clown and held the record for disturbing the class the most times. I would listen to how he had all the right answers the teacher asked, yet he wasn't the type that rubbed it in your face. He became my idol. I wanted to be him. He could make a difference during his life. But how could I ever get as much knowledge as he had? Almost 30 years later, I find out that my brother-in-law is his cousin. I got invited to dinner at his mothers house. This was a very big moment for me. He and his wife walked in. He looked the same. I went over and gave him a very big sincere hug and told him about wishing I was him. He was completely suprised by my frank and honest statement. But he couldn't believe it. He didn't think that anyone even knew who he was. His career went from teacher, principal, superintendent of schools, to a position with the State Board of Ed. I knew he would make a difference to peoples lives. I'd like to do something to impact peoples lives as well. After hours of talking he said he wanted to say two things to me. One, was that I beat him in the geometry final with a perfect 100. And two, that I don't give myself enough credit for a gift that he felt that I have. He said I had wisdom and vision. I didn't understand. He told me to just be myself and say what I feel and people would understand. He told me to stop worrying about not having the best skills in how I say it. Now I will try to bring this all back to the topic of the Jewel List. Just like all of you, I too was brought to the list by Jewels music and words. I was seeking data and knowledge about her. As a bonus I found all of you wonderful people. When ever I had data or knowledge to share with the list, I did. But I felt I also had some wisdom to share as well. They were usually in the form of off topic stories. My hero gave me the confidence to try. Then the good, bad and ugly side of me kept creeping in and out. At one point it lead to a battle with Dave #2 and Dave #3. This battle effected me. I decided to just sit back and let the two of them bury themselves. And I'm back because I believe they have. Both of them have clearly shown that they are here for the same reasons we all are. It takes a certain kind of person to appreciate Jewel. If we are on this list, we must all have it. Dave #2 tried to hide it. I saved the posts were he slips and shows he to is a true EDA. Dave #3 just gave us a wonderful off-topic reply that makes me almost want to visit Hawaii. With this letter, I offer an olive branch to them both. After giving there letters a lot of thought, I think I understand their concerns. Just as I am afraid that this list could turn into nothing but Jewel Content, they must be afraid that the list will turn into no Jewel content. Both scenarios would be awful. I think we can take our differing views and work to make a better list. I read every letter and seach for the wisdom you all are kind enough to share with all of us. Thank you all. With our collective visions, we are sure to have more JewelStocks, tape trees, and EDA events. This is not an end to my frequent disagreements, but believe me, I only have good intentions. (Plus a little bit of work, but hey, it was worth it) I really wanted to get it today but I didn't have any cash so what I did was I went to the garage and found like four bags of aluminum cans and stuff and took it to the can-recycling machine at the supermarket; After about 10-15 minutes of feeding cans and stuff into the machine, I had 130 aluminum cans @ 2.5 cents per can = $3.25, four 2-liter bottles @ 5 cents per bottle = $0.20, and six glass bottles @ 2.5 cents per bottle = $0.15, for a total of $3.60. Then I went to the store and bought it for the $3.49 list price plus 7.75% CA/Orange County sales tax, total $3.76, minus the $3.60 recycling money, so it only cost me SIXTEEN CENTS! See what happens when you do good stuff for the environment? **So start saving your cans now and you can have enough money to get the new album when it comes out in March, ESPECIALLY people in those states like Oregon, Michigan, or Maine, or whatever, I think, who get like 5 or 10 cents per can or bottle, 'cause you'll have two to four times as much money as us CA people.
