Jewel, DeFranco, Cranberries, Tori Amos >etc... First of all, what is with the ignorance of any band >with a male singer except for bands that are some way connected >with Jewel (Duncan Sheik, Rugburns...) So what's wrong with female singers????? Yeah, I've noticed that too. (Not on the list, but when I shop for music.) There's a lot of facets to this. First, the music industry is very much male-centric and the femmes need as much support from us as we can give. (But then, I'm just being facetious, so nevermind.) This the Jewel list, so of course most of what we say here will start with the topic of Jewel. And when it comes to Jewelesque (sounds like 'burlesque') music, there seems to be a concentration of female artists. But when it comes to male artists the only ones that immediately spring to mind are Duncan Sheik, Francis Dunnery, and another guy I heard on the radio and told myself I should remember his name (I didn't.... David Wilcox, maybe?). A few others that come to mind that Jewel fans might like are Catherine Wheel, Crash Test Dummies, Toad the Wet Sprocket.... hmm, can't think of any others, ohwell. Of course, this isn't all the music I listen to. Like ol' Dean-o my tastes are a bit on the eclectic side. Of the CDs I actually own I have Ned's Atomic Dustbin, The Doors, Queensryche, The Cure, Rush, Joe Satriani, U2, Pink Floyd, Nine Inch Nails, Extreme, a collection of Celtic music, Faith No More, REM, and the Sailor Moon television soundtrack (US). I won't even get into what music I would like to own (my memory's not that good and I'd rather not take up a whole digest with one post). If I were to make a gross assumption about the nature of EDA's musical (and non-musical) tastes, it would be that we are all much more than what we present in our messages, but it doesn't matter whether someone shares the same likes/dislikes as us because we love them for their differences as much as for their similarities. He knew the German people were accostomed to living under the military. He knew Germany was a republic w/o repulicans, a democracy w/o democrats. When he tryed for the first time to start a revolt ("the beerhouse putch") he wasn't given a severe punishment because the judges were rather disappointed by his failure, as they weren't replaced by the new establishment, and their loyalties were to the Keiser. He was sent to prison for a few monthes. The Veimar republic had one of the most democratic constitutions in the world, allowing far greater freedoms then others. It had one major flaw - section 48 said that the president could send out special orders in case of an emergency, only to be ratified by the reichstaag (the parliament). Seeing as the president had the authority to disband the reichstaag, this was not very effective in case of an emergency. The fact that the government lowered the value of the Mark so that they would be able to pay the debts set out in the Versaille accords, didn't do much good for the economy. When times are hard, people tend to go to the extremes, and so the communists on the one side, and the nazis on the other, gained power in the house of representatives. The nobles and those with money supported the nazis out of fear of the communists. Eventually the situation came to be that there could be no government without the nazis, and so Hitler became prime minister. When president Hindenburg died of old age, Hitler passed a law unifying the post of the president with that of the prime minister, to a new post called "Leader" or in german, "Phurer" (sp?). The rest is history. Nazis don't need much to get themselves started, and once they're out and about, they're very hard to get rid of. They gather force through "educating" people of the dangers hidden in minorities. You should not grow to disregard the danger they pose. They not as small a group as you think they are, they have more power then you realize, and they are just waiting patiently for the chance to strike, and take over. I'm not calling for a witchhunt, or anything of the sort, but I am saying that if a group of skinheads were to come to your neighbourhood, and start making trouble that is not prohibited by federal laws, you would probably start looking for a state law that would give you an excuse to kick them out of there, and if there wasn't one, then you would start applying pressure to create one. Ask yourself - do you really want those skinheads in your neighbourhood? That is the very same question you are asked here. With all due respect to their rights, I don't want them here. The freedom of speech is not there for the purpose of being able to gather and fight against other people, it is there for the purpose of bridging over gaps. Add to that the fact that a fanatic group doesn't need a lot of people for a commando action, say, the assasination of an elected leader, or the bombing of a federal building, and it is easy to see why in this case there are greater things even then the right of speech. 42, Tuff On Mon, 11 Nov 1996, Anthony Trudeau wrote: > Hitler gained power, because of the incompetence of the token government > that was set up by the victors of World War I. The Freedom of Speech is there so that the minority, not just racial but social as well, always has a voice. Even white supremacists deserve a voice. You don't have to agree with them, you don't have to listen to them, but they still should have a voice. Where do we draw the line and say one group can't have a voice? We can't because once you draw a line you are weakening the structure of the amendment. As far as the extremes that groups such as this may go to, if they break a law they should be punished. We can't punish a group for the crimes they may commit, even if that group is more likely to commit crimes. We were told that they planned on releasing "Foolish Games" next, and in a way they have done so by putting it on this CD single. Must be they'll release another Promo CD to the radio stations when they want "Foolish Games" to start getting airplay. This is also GREAT since anyone who hasn't gotten the "Pieces of You" CD, but gets this new CD single will hear "Foolish Games", which IMHO is the best song on the CD.
