I listen to country music and love it. If Jewel was promoted as a country singer, many of her songs would fit in. Jewel is country in a lot of ways. As far as rock, altenative, or whatever you people call it these days, there is very little that I enjoy listening to. Jewel and Natalie Merchant are just about it. As far as country music goes, a lot of it would be considered rock n roll in previous years. In fact many of today's county artists often cover rock classics on their albums and at shows. If I know that a singer didn't write a song and draw from their own personal experiences then the song loses something right of the bat. It just seems so sterile to me. And this isn't limited to just country music. A lot of 'Top 40' music and soft rock is like that too. One of the many reasons I am so into Jewel's music is that she does write her own songs. I think it comes through clear in her singing and the emotion and feeling she puts into every note. -Floyd ------------------------------ From: Anthony Trudeau Date: Wed, 6 Nov 1996 19:06:55 -0600 Subject: NJC RE: Snow anyone? Selena ------------------------------ From: Trent Smith Date: Wed, 06 Nov 1996 20:41:22 -0700 (PDT) Subject: NJC: Continuing Country Conversation Some people (I suspect trying to explain away the fact that, as sophisticated city-dwellers, they "just don't like it") have complained about the (admitted) conservatism and lack of creativity/originality in country music, as well as complaints about artists not writing their own material. I thought up this parallel that might be able to explain away some of these objections (or possibly make them worse): Contemporary jazz. In both forms, any and all real innovation took place long ago, and now the forms are all pretty much set and standardized across the board. Except to cleverly incorporate some sort of outside element (like rock stylings, elaborate stage shows, fancy production) or dig back into history to revive an old style (Leann Rimes, anyone?), everybody's pretty much playing on the same board, with the same deck of cards. However, this doesn't mean that the style is necessarily dead, because there are people who can manipulate those forms very well to make really good music (like Joshua Redmon, Keith Jarrett, Wynton Marsalis/ Trisha Yearwood, Vince Gill, etc). So while no one (at least not me) is going to call these people innovators or "artists" as such, we can still appreciate their music for what it is. Now, that's not to say that we (jazz fans at least, not sure about Country fans) wouldn't really like for someone to come along like Charlie Parker in the 40s to revolutionize the whole scene, make it "exciting" again, but until that happens we'll sit back and appreciate the "expressive talent" (as opposed to "creative talent") of what we've got. As far as country singers not writing their own songs, that's a valid complaint, and an aspect of that genre that bothers me too. However, remember that until the Beatles very few rock'n'rollers wrote their own songs, that there are some country singers who write their own stuff (Shania Twain to name one), and that, even if it was written by someone else, any singer (in any genre) worth listening to is going to put an individual stamp on whatever he or she sings. I think what bothers me most, though, and what brought this whole topic up in the first place, is the compartmentalization and mutual isolation between rock/pop and country music. It seems to me that any singer/band (like Jewel) who makes "country-ish" songs should be able to be played on country radio, even if she isn't a "country singer", and also that country songs that have a wide cross-over appeal should be played on pop/rock radio, but, to my knowledge, this seems to rarely ever occur even for "superstars" like Garth Brooks. I blame the music industry and marketing people for this, and confess that I don't really understand it. Anyone got any answers for me?
