Hasn't opened in Australia but we're hearing all about because the director is one of our own. Y'all saw Strictly Ballroom right? Or at least are aware of it as being one of ours. We have funny feelings here about Aussies heading for the big smoke. It's like there are two camps. The actors who want to stay true to our own film industry which is fast growing and developing a style and character all of it's own, and the ones who pack up, head for the States and adopt American accents to get parts (Nicloe, Mel, Russel Crowe etc). A lot of us feel that these people are never the same again. Something is lost because they've changed sides. I love a lot of American movies as much as the next person, but I think we have one of the most unique film industries in the world. It's now something to be very proud of and not everyone feels they have to go to America and work on multi-million dollar budgets in order to be a good actor/director/designer whatever. Until I see the film I'll reserve my judgement even though it does look like maybe the bright lights of Hollywood have blinded Baz a little. I mean to go from working on small budgets in Australia to a $20 million Hollywood budget!!!?? The mind boggles. Having said that, modernisation and altering stories is a dangerous thing. After a couple of months of trying to determine some profoundly interesting way to de-lurk, I=92ve seized upon one of the numerous Toms=92 suggestion for newbies to simply introduce themselves by relating how they became interested in Jewel. So here goes.... SHE WAS MEANT FOR ME A friend of mine owns a record store, and each week he receives dozens of promotional news releases, ads and other material from distributors, record companies and so on. I occasionally look through these items, and towards the end of the winter of 1995, I noticed a very brief, one paragraph preview of a CD by someone with what I presumed was the intentionally gimmicky name of =91Jewel.=92 For some inexplicable reason, this little blurb leapt off the page at me and shouted in my ear =93Buy me. I will have some impact on your life.=94 (T= his is scarcely an exaggeration. It really induced a very odd reaction in me.) I asked my friend to order it, prompting him to ask =93Why? Do you know this? What have you heard about her?=94 I responded that I had no idea who she was, and had no good reason, but to order it anyway. A CANADIAN FIRST, EH? I received a copy of POY shortly thereafter, on what the distributor says was the first day it was available in Canada, and that mine was the first order that was filled. So there is some reason to suspect that I may have been the first person in this country to buy a Jewel CD, which is as trivial a piece of information as you=92re likely to run across.=20 Anyway, I started listening to it, and what can I say that you haven=92t all experienced? I was wowed, and I don=92t wow easily. By the time I heard =91Don=92t=92, I was a goner. NEAR HER SOMETIMES (Well, twice anyway) Ms. Kilcher has played here in Montreal only once, and although I liked the CD so much, I was still surprised by how taken I was by her performance. (=91Someone half my age shouldn=92t have so much insight,=92= I remember saying to someone else at the club that night.) She genuinely made me feel more hopeful about life than I had felt in some time. I was fortunate enough to talk to her for some length after the performance, and it is only in retrospect that I realize how patient she was as I rambled on about silly things, such as her yodeling, not knowing that she=92s faced that series of questions 850 thousand times before. She=92s a charmer. She never has returned here, (hmmm; must hav= e been something I said...) but I finally was able to score tickets for an out of town show, and flew to Toronto to see her in May 1996, where I chatted with her only briefly after the show, but nevertheless, it was another memorable experience. GIVE =93PIECES=94 A CHANCE Since then, I have been doing my best to spread the word, and have bought Pieces of You for about a dozen friends and family members. All except one have become big fans as well, and several have also bought copies for other friends of theirs. If nothing else, I have friends with remarkably good taste (well, in music, anyway...) ANGELS STANDING BY This first post has already gone on longer than I had intended, so I will try to be less verbose in the future ( =91a task that is not so easily accomplished,=92 he cringed). Suffice it to say that I=92m happy = to be among you, and I hope to make a positive contribution to this angelic community. I will post again soon, which you can take as either a promise or threat.
