(alanis fans--no offense, i *love* alanis, but her and jewel are VERY different.) but jewel....it's almost ironic that she can sing about "faggots", "bitches", etc, in such a innocent way! i love that! =D i like the *words* to jewel's songs just as much, if not MORE, than i like the music! my favorite songs are "i'm sensitive", "you were meant for me", and "near you always". but i love all of them! =D i was sooooo happy to read in the FAQ that jewel had unreleased music.....i *HAVE* to hear it! =D i've never seen jewel in concert........ altho, one day, i was in a local record store, and was reading what shows were coming up, and i saw jewel's name!!!!!!!! so, of course i HAD to go. i didn't buy tix then, tho. i waited and called the store after a few days, to ask how much tix were, and you know what they said????? they said,"oh, i'm sorry, that concert was 2 weeks ago". i said, "but....but you had her name up on your board!!!!". the idiots had *LEFT* her name up there and got me all happy and Xcited that i was gonna get to see jewel, but NOOOOO, they had to burst my bubble. =P i was really upset. so, if jewel *EVER* comes to nashville, you bet i'm gonna go. =) LOL, this post didn't really introduce *ME*, did it?! oh well, talking about jewel is much more Xciting than talking about myself! =) so, i'm gonna go, but i'm warning you all, i'm a really post-happy girl, and i will post ALOT if you don't tell me to shut up. =D see ya laterz! A cookie, as in what someone sends to your - - computer in order to keep track of who is visiting or using their site. - - What exactly can a cookie do? There are a bunch of environment variables you can access with web scripts, and the one that concerns people most is the last site you visited. So don't visit playboy.com and then your girlfriend's page or anything :) His original reference was to the Neiman Marcus(sp?) story you will see someday if you haven't already. I don't think those things will ever die. Just like chain letters. Grrr. Cookies are used to provide state on your machine. They actually go on the client (your machine) to allow the web programmer to store info about what you are doing/have done in the past. Here's a geek explaination stolen from a web page somewhere: INTRODUCTION Cookies are a general mechanism which server side connections (such as CGI scripts) can use to both store and retrieve information on the client side of the connection. The addition of a simple, persistent, client-side state significantly extends the capabilities of Web-based client/server applications. OVERVIEW A server, when returning an HTTP object to a client, may also send a piece of state information which the client will store. Included in that state object is a description of the range of URLs for which that state is valid. Any future HTTP requests made by the client which fall in that range will include a transmittal of the current value of the state object from the client back to the server. The state object is called a cookie, for no compelling reason. This simple mechanism provides a powerful new tool which enables a host of new types of applications to be written for web-based environments. Shopping applications can now store information about the currently selected items, for fee services can send back registration information and free the client from retyping a user-id on next connection, sites can store per-user preferences on the client, and have the client supply those preferences every time that site is connected to. Salvation. Back during the summer, didn't someone ask about this boot cd and others responded that it wasn't Jewel at all, but some classical music or something? I'm confused. Is this cd then that boot cd that was debated over a couple weeks ago, the contents of which will be treed soon? So, here is another EDA that didn't meet up with us at the Boston show. Goddamn that Harris brother. Scaring away the prospects:) anelise. Is that pronounced "ann-a-lease-a" or "ann-a-lease" ? Patric, you are a bit misinformed (or perhaps jaded) about NJC. It wasn't a some plot by a disgruntled censor who wanted people to post only jewel related stuff. I'm sure somewhere in the digest archives we could find who originally brought up the idea. I think that it may even have been a regular poster who was concerned for all the people who didn't have time to read all the mail, so that they could automatically see in the subject headers what mails had jewel content and what didn't and read accordingly. NJC also hasn't fizzled out (I mean, look, people still ask about it. If it had fizzled out, no one would ask about it because no one would be using it and the point would be moot). Ideally, NJC is for posts that don't have a connection to Jewel and serves to help people weed through the massive amount of mail from this list, especially when they don't have time. It is NOT a limitor on the free-expression of the list (a moderator would be, but thank god(dess) that Jeff doesn't moderate us. or maybe it's too bad, considering that he doesn't read us anymore because of volume and chaff). It is a courtesy thing. Unless it is abused by both its proponents and its antagonists. Also, we are not a newsgroup, we are a mailing list. Thank god(dess) for that, too. And Jewel does not smoke. I want to quash this thread before anyone picks it up from Patric's post and wonders. She does like lollipops, though. Tootsie pops. Grape. wazoo. So I gave her 'Cause anyone can start a conflict...it's harder yet to disregard it.' When one of my friends saw it, he's like "so who's Jewel?" I told him she's a singer. Then he tries to funny and said "what does she sing? Country? Christian?" I really didn't know how to answer. I just told him she's a really good singer. About a week later I gave her 'It doesn't take a talent to be mean...your words can crush things that are unseen.' I think we practically repeated the conversation. A lot of ppl liked the thoughts, and I think I got my teacher interested in Jewel. I made her a tape of PoY anyway. I think I'm gonna give her 'Such an injustice, as children we are told that from God we fell.' next, just to see what he says. I want to thank the many people that responded with kind words and personal stories of there own. They really made me feel better. There is truth in the saying that there is safety in numbers. I still try to get people to listen to Jewel because I feel like if they aren't, they are really missing something special... a beautiful voice, thoughtful lyrics, and lots of emotion. I guess some people don't want there music to be that deep. I find nothing fullfilling in the current 'popular' music. It mostly seems superficial and dumb to me.
