I know that 89.3 FM WAMH in Amherst is the same way. It's the amherst college radio station, and the constitution for WAMH says that we are a non-commercial, independent radio station that exists to provide an alternative to the other radio stations within our broadcast range. We play mainly indie rock because that format is not supported by commercial stations anywhere as a full-time format. It's the policy of the radio station. We don't play the "usual" alternative stuff, even if people request it, because that isn't what we exist for. And we also don't have that stuff like Alanis, the Cranberries, Smashing Pumpkins (we had Mellon Collie on the new shelf the week before it came out, and it was promptly removed when it was released and was the number one selling album). You might say that the ideas and ideals are stupid, but hey, if such stations didn't exist (and most of them are college, non-commercial) then we wouldn't have the big commercial alternative/modern rock stations; we'd be stuck in the eighties where light rock and talk radio dominated (ugh). > He went on to explain that he only liked to play Jazz. > > I said: " [ mumble--mumble--son of a motherless-goat!--mumble--mumble ] THree Amigos. Well, consider the fact that he liked to play Jazz. In other words, he probably had a Jazz show. Where does Jewel fit into that equation? Last year in my regular indi-rock show, I managed to squeeze in Sarah McLachlan and Jewel into almost all my shows because that's what I wanted to play and I chose tracks that no one ever hears unless they are fans. This year I'm lucky because i have one of the special weekend shows where you choose a format like Jazz, blues, gospel, etc. and do a whole show based on that. I chose "folk" and can freely play whatever i want, including Jewel. This is one of the problems with calling radio stations that you don't listen to or can't even receive: you don't know their format or their policies. This radio station basically sounded like one that exists for the dj's to play what they like (college radio yeah!) not a commercial station that exists to play what the record companies push and what the public demands (or thinks they demand). The kind of radio station that will make an impact on Jewel's acceptance in the public and the corporate world is the commercial station. So, i've noticed that there is a progression in Jewel websites. First there was Colin Stuckless with the original one that he developed and maintained and which got a lot of people interested in Jewel and this list. Then Aaron Walker came along, borrowing stuff from Colin's page and slowly developed the official EDA page which became the primary source for Jewel news and list info as Colin didn't maintain his page as much. Then Adam Longfellow came along and borrowed a lot of stuff from Aaron and gradually overshadowed Aaron's work, developing the comprehensive Jewel page for fans and listers. Damn, those kangaroo jokes are funny:) Helen, it's fun to have you back (why is it that the Australians on the lists I'm on are so much fun?). Isn't she funny? Riding a pet kangaroo to work, but not when there's bad weather:) Hey, you listening to me? I'm talking about how funny Helen is! Listen to ME when I'm speaking, dammit! yeah, ME.
