A loooooooong loooooooong time ago I saw her Wizard Of Oz thingie on TV. It was really cool. My mom was actually watching it and was really into it and I had no idea who Jewel was, but I did recognize her from somewhere and I said to my mom "hey I think she's this pop star person" or something. It was really weird. She sang a few Wiz Of Oz stuff, and there were some cool actors there w/ her...like Natalie Cole, and this other guy who's in that movie "The Bird Cage." Jewel played Dorothy I think. Anyway, I don't know where you could get copies of her performance on there, but maybe if someone got a tape of it you could buy it from them or something. It's pouring rain in New England and memories of the sun is all I have today...) The day was another EDA success, despite some confusion over exactly where we were supposed to meet for that chinese breakfast thingy. Hey, so it was 70 BEACH Street, not BEACON Street! At least I mis-directed you guys to a street that borders the show venue! Actually, we suspect there was a police stakeout at the chinese place, and the sheer number of AUTHORITIES and security folks at the show did nothing to dispel this notion. Phil, DawgBoy, his lady friend Beth (DawgGirl?!? ...too funny Mike), Jared and I found each other, and after Phil led us to the 52nd floor of the Prudential Tower, we found out what an EDA will -- and will not -- tolerate spending for breakfast ($29 ain't $6, Phil). So, we did the Marriott brunch instead and arrived at the show around 12:30, where Paul and Rachel had established us an EDA beachhead with the Snyders (thanks guys). Not too long after, Mr. and Mrs. Bossy-Bossy found us. Then a list lurker named Mike Phillips wandered up and identified himself. I thought he might be part of the suspected police sting, but he never tipped his hand. Stoolie or not, Mike is definite EDA material! SkinnyPete stood in the back of the crowd with his "new" friends, and wouldn't join us. Hey Steve, I gave your button to Mike! ;) (And where were you Jay? In the back with Steve?) Tony Bennett opened up with a really good set, followed by two ho-hum acts and then Jewel around 3:15. The autumn weather was brilliant, with intense sunshine. Before Jewel's set, deja vu struck! Frisbees! When the frisbees flew from the left side, my idea to carry out bananas from the buffet proved prophetic. Few items are as effective at deflecting frisbess than a well flung banana! And we didn't have one or two, but a whole bunch of anti-frisbee bananas! And, as a secondary line of defense, New York-style bagels. As the first wave of frisbees came in (well short of the stage but in frightening numbers), Phil and I waved our arms defensively. Cries of "Sinjin!" rang out, but we knew surfer boy couldn't help us this time. Instinctively, Paul Kim lept up, caught the lead frisbee in his teeth and came crashing to the blanket, chewing the disc in a mad frenzy. (At this sight, a phantom ache flared in my right shin.) "Hold the bananas!" shouted Mr. BB, directing the valiant defense, "No, in your left hands...not so hard! Pivot! Pivot!" A second wave of half-heartedly thrown frisbees bounced off the crowd well behind us. The frisbee onslaught subsided, but we kept the bananas within reach for the rest of the day. (I have no idea WHAT DawgBoy did with all those bananas after Jewel's set...) Jewel saw our EDA sign and said "hi, this is for you guys..." And she wore a really cool pair of shades (which we all could have used). Then I embarrassed Rachel by making her STAND UP with the "EveryDay Angels" sign during the "...we are everyday angels..." verse. (You guys can be so darn shy...) Anyway, we caught Jewel's set and spoke to Bibi (her road manager) for awhile. Pretty uneventful, but we did get the news scoop of the album delay. It also seems that Jewel and Bibi got a police escort in their limo from the hotel. (Tell me that doesn't look like a we'll-nab-that-Harris-guy trick!) A friend of mine later told me that Jewel was trying to hop onto one of the local cop's horse backstage, and she signed some autographs before leaving. Us EDAs wandered over to Fuddruckers to have a burger and to b.s. for awhile. We told JewelStock stories to Mike, exercised our selective memories and had a really good time. Turns out Jared was our most obsessed EDA, with 16 concerts attended to date. I placed a distant second with 9 (since March) and most everyone else had 6-8 shows under their belt. (When Mike lurks, he really LURKS...he was at Hampton Beach and Lupos as well!) Then we began our patented "slow adjournment". Some of us hung around under the Commons parking garage until the police search dogs could be heard in the distance. At that point, we slipped out under the cover of darkness, with an agreement to do a Christmas EDA Get-Together when Jewel announces her next Boston show in December (I wouldn't be surprised at all...) - -- Dennis (Red-Faced but not caught Red-Handed) Harris ------------------------------ From: "Don Davidson" Date: Sun, 20 Oct 1996 16:44:10 -0400 Subject: YWMFM Bostons top "HIT" radio station KISS 108 finally played YWMFM at about 1:40AM last nite. Donnie ------------------------------ From: Harrisbros@aol.com Date: Sun, 20 Oct 1996 17:55:38 -0400 Subject: EDA Public Service Announcement ***A list veteran recently tried to "reclaim" the list (how capricious!). Another volunteered to enforce list netiquette (crunch time!). Then Little Dean questioned if I had left the list due to disenchantment with the EDAs: Never! The concept of EDAs is very much a part of my personality, but then again I guess the definition of "EDA" becomes important here... Some folks think it stands for "EveryDay Angles" (!), some think it means you subscribe to the jewel@smoe.org mail list (but NOT the News Only List!). I prefer to think of EDA as a mindset. Many of us have met each other with no other goal in mind short of learning more about Jewel Kilcher, and maybe getting a tape or two of a live show. This past summer, it became much, much more. Between JewelStock and the various EDA get-togethers since then, a closely knit group of list members have emerged. It usually goes like this: 1) A Jewel fan shows up at a concert and notices a group of fans who are loud and laughing a lot. (Signs, ribbons and balloons don't hurt either.) They seem to be having a MUCH better time than the others at the show (including the drunks). Sometimes, the new fan gets the courage to walk up to the new group and introduce themselves. They are welcomed into the group, and hang around. 2) The new fan decides to stay throughout the show, and maybe go out to eat with them after the show. After all, some of these people seem to know Jewel on some level or another, and they might have stuff (!) they might share with you. And the seats (or floor area) are pretty good as well. And no one else will talk to you at the show anyway... 3) During the course of the evening, something strange happens. The new fan seems to almost *like* these new people. They are friendly, sometimes will share a ham sandwich and have things other than Jewel in common. They seem to have known each other for a very long time. By the end of the evening, you feel pretty comfortable with the group, and they insist you join them at the next show. 4) On your way home, you think it was a pretty good show. Several days later, it becomes the best damn concert you ever saw! You begin to miss the people you met at the show. Anticipation of another get-together begins to grow. 5) You read about the event on the list. You post (sometimes for the first time). The list becomes much more personal to you. You get side posts from the people you met. You are offered dubs you didn't know existed. When another event is proposed, your adrenalin rises. You begin referring to yourself as an EDA. 6) You attend the next event as a veteran EDA, who has stories to tell and old friends to see again. If you are lucky, you get to welcome a newbie, and experience the process through their eyes. Even more peculiarly, you might even begin enjoying the other EDAs as much as listening to the artist who brought you together in the first place! 7) You've bought into the EDA philosophy, and if anyone posts anything threatening to it, you tend to post gentle "but you can't understand" flames... EXACTLY! You can't understand until you have been there. And the key to being there is knowing it's there in the first place. Now, if you are new to the list, you are either intrigued by the EDA talk, and want to be a part of it. OR you think these EDA posters are a bunch of dumb asses with snotty attitudes, who have nothing better to do but post stupid, rambling posts that mean nothing to you. They are the village idiots! And they WASTE your bandwidth! So the NJC debate arises, dominates the list, and ends with a resounding "go to the News List!" or "I remember the good old days" post (six weeks ago, that is). Okay, EDA vets, we NEED these newbies. They are the new blood, and they will prevent stagnation and in-breeding of this group. So, our responsibilities are to: SHARE...stories, information, tapes, a ham sandwich, whatever. Adopt a newbie. Today. BE TOLERANT. We all step on toes at one time or another. We have less of an excuse as we should know better. Flame mildly, with humor AND privately, if possible. POST REGULARLY. Hell, we all disappeared at the same time! I don't subscribe to ANY other list and most likely never will. I post less frequently now as to avoid NJC debates and to not overstay my welcome. (Funny thing, my name seems to have passed into the public domain...I guess I'm one of those "urban legends", eh?) ORGANIZE GET-TOGETHERS. Selena has actively promoted this, but where are you West Coasters? Too laid back? ;) If you need an example of how to do it, check out web URL: http://www.theartof.com/js/doitagain Newbies: if you want to join in the EDA thing, look for local shows. Get a group together (even a group of newbies). Do breakfast, or lunch or dinner the day of the show. Promote it. Enjoy it. Then post. Fan interaction at a Jewel show isn't NJC, it's the very essence of Jewel CONTENT. Anyone can be a fan who collects and stacks stuff on a shelf, an EDA takes Jewel's message to heart, understands their feelings and connects with others. They share, and make things a little better, even if on a small scale. And if an EDA "vet" doesn't give you a fair shake, let me know...I'll sic the "Rat Pack" on 'em ;) If you don't care for the EDA philosophy and the NJC irritates you, subscribe to the News Only List. That's what it is there for. If you feel you need to stay on the Jewel List to make contacts to get stuff, but don't want to bother with knowing the people on the list, you can't have it both ways. That is simply using people, and contrary to the EDA philosophy. In the process of meeting other list members, you might discover something more valuable than yet another version of WWSYS or Chime Bells -- genuine friends. So, everyone relax, have fun and post. Please keep posts brief (especially any quotes), ask questions and try to meet face to face one day. There are a lot of Jewel-related activities being kicked around, so keep an eye on the list. Also, if you haven't e-mailed me about donating something financially toward computer storage for Jeff (the guy who generously maintains this list for us), please do so soon.
