I'm gonna shout. Really loud. And I want all of you to hear me. This is IMPORTANT. Those of you who know me know that I'm a disgustingly happy person. But I'm not happy right now. There is a problem on this list, and I'm gonna do my damnedest to fix it, right now. I am SICK and TIRED of the way this list is running. I'm not blaming anything on anyone, so don't worry, this isn't an anti-newbie flame. I'm pissed off because all of my friends are dropping off the list. Some are switching to digest, a few are dropping the list all together. I myself, who used to spend at least an hour a day reading list mail, have been going down the list and deleting ALMOST EVERY SINGLE mail. For me, this started with the Alanis Morrisette thread. I don't give a damn about Jewel vs. Alanis... hell, I didn't even read any of the posts either way. Since then, I have been deleting posts that follow threads- I honsetly don't think there's been one thread I've followed. I used to post almost every day. But now, I think I've posted maybe 10 times since the New Hampshire show. I can't even keep track of all the great people who gave up and left the list. I haven't seen any posts from Crunch in a while... or Amy... or Cheezy; is he still even on here ? Mike C. never says a word any more. Dennis just complains to himself 'cause he got sick and tired of yelling about the same things every day. I remember when I first joined the list, people were talking about how mean one of the Tori Amos lists was. They said "If you say anything at all not Tori related, you will get a flame from every single person on the list". Then we all talked about how great OUR list was, and how we all tried to understand everyone else's posts before we flamed. There was a time when I would politely send people letters, asking them to please use JC and NJC- not because I folowed them, but I knew it was a help to those who did. I have nothing against NJC posts- lord knows that about 97% of my posts have nothing to do with Jewel. But after a while of asking these same people over and over, I gave up. it wasn't worth the effort anymore. Anyway, I'm gonna get to the point of this letter. I WANT TO RECLAIM THIS LIST. Not that it was ever mine. Not that it only belongs to a select group of Jewelaholics. I just want the old list back. Newbies are great. God bless the newbies. God bless the lurkers. Newbies, if you haven't introduced yourselves, please do so now. If you newbies feel left out, just post ,and I'm sure most of us will send you little stories about ourselves and the other list members. I didn't realize how much this was true, until last weekend , when 6 EDA's sat at a table in Fudrucker's for two hours, telling EDA stories to welcome in a newbie ( Hi, Mike ). We are not mean people. It's not that we don't want you here. It's just that we want to know everyone like we used to. Now, a list of things that PISS me OFF. I know they annoy other people too... and I don't care if you're the one doing these things and I'm hurting your feelings. I won't name names, but there is something called COMMON COURTESY. It's obviously something that quite a few of us lack. None of us are truly perfect angels... and I don't think any of us claim to be. But there are some small changes that you can make that will mean all the difference in the world to this list. USE JC OR NJC -- this is just common courtesy. How hard is it to push 2 or 3 keys ? Maybe people don't WANT to read your Jewel dream. Maybe some people do. Just give them the option to know what they're getting into beforehand. DON'T REPLY TO EVERY POST SEPARATELY -- If you must , keep a tab, and then , when you're done reading mail, reply to all of the letters all at once in the same post. Or , even better- if you're saying something that is probably of no interest to the majority of the list ( like what color you're dying your hair tonight ) JUST TELL THAT ONE PERSON. I admit, sometimes these things are fun to read. I admit, I do the same thing. Just remember- writing a reply to the list and then CCing it to that person is the MOST POINTLESS thing you can do. They're going to get it anyway, and you just cluttered up their milbox with two copies of the same thing. Thanks a lot. DON'T POST ONE WORD REPLIES -- They're just totally idiotic. This is a no-brainer. Why do 600 people need to know that some one asked a question and you answered "no" ? They don't. Don't even bother. DON'T COPY A WHOLE LETTER TO REPLY TO IT-- We've gone over and over this. Just common courtesy. Think before you do something stupid. A lot of you people are lucky that we AREN'T a highly flaming list. Some of you would be totally burnt by now. I just think problems don't go away if you ignore them. And I know this list won't get any better if I keep my mouth shut. I'm almost to the point of leaving myself - and this list was possibly the only thing that got me through last summer. I don't want to give you guys up. Amy, Dennis, Greg, Igor, Akira, Sinjin, Robb, Liz, Selena, Dean, Paul, come back. I miss you guys terribly. We can't let this happen to us. We can't be going to concerts and reminiscing about the good old days. We have to make it good again. For those of you newbies who wonder why in the hell I care about this so much- I'm sorry you didn't see the list as it was. But maybe, if you're lucky, you'll see it again. This wouls rule out the possibility of someone copying Jewel's lyrics.. but, it would also imply that Jewel copied someone else's lyrics. Has anyone else heard this song and > know who it is or the story behind Jewel using their lyrics..? My God Lauren. You just made me feel real old. "Your So Vain" was a hit song by Carly Simon in the early 70's. It's about her and Warren Beatty, and how vain Warren is in her eyes. The phase Jewel used in her song was taken from Carly's song and sung in the same manner. It's pretty much the same as Rachel's. And so many others that I have talked with. So many people wrote to me when I went off on the list, saying that they agreed with everything I said and that they were also close to leaving too. These people included lurkers and posters, most of them older members who contributed to the list and helped establish the EDA personality. You can't alter the course of history, of evolution. But you sure as hell can modify it to your liking:) Look, common courtesy is wonderful. Thinking before you send is great. Not sending a whole bunch of posts just because you're bored or want to get attention is golden. Personal replies are beautiful. For all you people who want to leave the list, don't pull a Paul and sulk around and then blurt out a pissy letter and leave. You can't solve things that way. And you get lonely:) There don't have to be 5 digests a day. If you too think that the list has gone downhill, don't call a toll free number, don't disconnect, don't voice your opinion with a simple "I agree" or a flame, just write privately to those who you think are not being conscientious posters and tell them to rein it in. And sorry if I'm not one of the old saws out here, and I fervently hope they come back so all us new saws can see what the list should be like. :) Today driving my brother home I had "Rare Angels" in the tape deck. He doesn't dislike Jewel, but she isn't his favorite. So when "Need a Piece of Your Love Machine" comes on, he starts grimacing and looking quite carsick. When queried on his look, he responds with: "This is so gross! She's a perv!" I had never really listened to the song up until then, I just thought of it as "that song between 'Life's a Great Big Mystery Show' and 'Down at the Bridge.'" So, now that I have listened to it, really listened to it, I have to say I don't mind it. Guess she had been on the road way too long. Of course I am a whole seventeen years old, and not wise enough for my years, and just because I don't mind it doesn't mean others don't (I know that a 12 year old does). So, I was just wondering if anyone else had a... reaction to it? With all the poles going on (give these people a break and respond guys) around here I just thought I'd ask what people thought of this one? I think it's nifty the way Jewel can hold this excellent balance of sensuality and sophistication, how about you guys?
