Does this give anyone else the willies? Promo profiteering is bad enough, but this is far, far worse than any bootleg concert CD... I'm not one to tell anyone else what to do, but really, really think about what you are doing if you go that route. Atlantic is really blowing it. Hundreds, nay THOUSANDS of dollars have been spent by this small sampling of Jewel fans on promo CDs. That is money that neither Jewel nor Atlantic will see. In the spirit of Jewelstock wherein a great thing arose from but a humble suggestion, what is the feasability of an official "fan club CD" of sorts (the kind traditionally associated with print-based fan clubs), with the contents of StL, PBFGaB, and the various promo-only re-mixes and alternate versions? It would only be a small run (by Atlantic's standards - what was the "break even" point for PoY? 40,000? I can't remember exactly), but I can't imagine anyone here not wanting it. Actually, if YWMFM needs a shot in the arm, Atlantic should do like they did with Tori and the Crucify EP - a between album release, more than a "single" but less than an album. That said, I thankfully have StL and PBFGaB and a couple of other promos, but I was able to get them before record stores and radio station employees (no offense to the good-natured radio station people among us...) started equating Jewel promos with $$$. Yes, there will still be a market for the promos even if everything is available elsewhere, but the grey market value of the promos will decrease considerably. So, how about it? bob ------------------------------ From: Selena Date: Sat, 12 Oct 1996 17:37:51 -0700 Subject: IRC tonite C'mon gang!! Let's IRC!!! E-mailing him directly might be a little less effective and maybe even a bit tacky. I'm willing to coordinate the effort, or maybe James Judd wants to (or Karl Fields, who brought it up earlier). Whatever. The point is, a $250-300 donation (or an appropriate piece of equipment) in one fell swoop will probably work better than 30 folks e-mailing him seperately with offers. - -- Dennis Harris ------------------------------ From: Harrisbros@aol.com Date: Sat, 12 Oct 1996 18:53:01 -0400 Subject: EDAs: Boston Common show and breakfast! There will be a number of us EDAs meeting in Boston Sunday morning prior to the Jewel show on the Commons. Plans are as follows: 1) We meet at the Imperial Tea House at 70 Beacon Street at 9-9:30 am for chinese breakfast. 2) We hang, pig out and do the EDA thing. 3) We wander around the free show and congregate for Jewel's set, where we have a helluva good time. Anyone who can't make the breakfast catch us at the show. If you can't find us, ask everyone you meet if they are an EveryDay Angel. (Yeah, it can be embarrassing but think of all the publicity you'll get us! Besides, you'll finally find us.) Tip-offs are blue ribbons/balloons, lots of smiles and loud laughter. Surrounding folks will also be watching us in amazement. Or just look for me. ;) - -- Dennis (Nothing Like a Last Minute Game Plan) Harris ------------------------------ From: Mike Connell Date: Sat, 12 Oct 1996 19:28:34 -0400 Subject: JewelStock Tapes: All folk NEW to the list (since 9/15) please read! Howdy "newbie" EDAs; There's been alot of questions posted to the list about JewelStock and the JewelStock Tapes lately by "newbies". Also, Alan Bershaw (the man who mastered the tape set) and I have both gotten numerous private EMAILs asking about the tapes....so I figured I'd take a few moments to explain & help out in a few matters. ******************** What was JewelStock? ******************** JewelStock was two concerts that Jewel performed for free, as a gift to the members of this mailing list, in appreciation of what her "internet fans" had done for her. (she has long said that this group has helped her gain her popularity etc.) The "list" was given the resposibility of doing alot of the duties in putting the shows together. Many of us did just that. On July 17 & 18th, she gave those concerts at the Bearsville Theatre in Bearsville NY, about 1 mile from Woodstock. The first show was free, the second one had a cover charge to raise funds for the theatre. Jewel herself performed for free at both shows. At the time, she had been recording her next CD at the Bearsville Studios for about 5 weeks. A&M artist Patty Griffin also performed for free on the first night, opening for Jewel. She is SPECTACULAR, I suggest you buy her CD, "Living With Ghosts". About 150 members of this list (of about 475 members at that time) and their 140 or so guests came from all over the country to spend time in Woodstock and catch one or both shows....and I mean from ALL over the country. They checked in from Frisco, San Diego, Alabama, Washington, Illinois, Ohio, Florida, Michigan...well, you get the picture. Many of us were there for 3 or 4 days, some stayed more. I think I can safely say, all in attendence had a blast and it was clearly the event of the summer for 99% if not 100% of the EDAs there. It was amazing. ******************************************************* What are the JewelStock Tapes and how can I get a copy? ******************************************************* For the benefit of those on the list that could not attend (humorously known as JewelSTUCK), and also for those that were there, Jewel allowed the event to be recorded so that we could distribute the recordings among the list members. It ended up being recorded by a sound crew hired by Atlantic Records. The tapes we have of the event are divided into two stages. Stage One includes everything performed by Jewel at both JewelStock shows EXCEPT the ten songs she performed with her band. It also includes a radio show she performed in Woodstock two days before JewelStock and her appearance on the Rosie O'Donnell show, which was the day before JewelStock. Stage One is a THREE 90-minute tape set, available ONLY in audio cassette format. Stage Two would include those band numbers, and would only be available in audio cassette format. Stage Two is tentatively scheduled for treeing February or March. The Patty Griffin set is not included with either stage. Stage One is what is presently being treed. The tree is now closed, and no more requests are being taken. However, don't weep, read on please. This does *not* mean you cannot get copies of the tapes. When the tree is completed (likely about 4 weeks from now), well over 200 EDA's, and perhaps over 300, will have copies of the tapes. Right now, that figure is at about 130. I suggest that "newbies" wait a good four more weeks. In the mean time join in with the list, have fun, and then when alot more of the list members have their tapes, solicit requests to the list to perhaps have someone dub you a set. I suggest waiting until early November. IMHO, It is not saavy to join the list and immediately start asking for tapes, as some have. That is NOT what this list nor the JewelStock tapes is about nor what it exists for. It is just one facet of this list. (It is a 'nice" facet I must admit) This list exists to spread the word of Jewel, to share in discussion about her, and to make friends while doing it. JewelStock was the epitome of that philosophy. It melded this group into a being of it's own. Please join us. You won't regret it. Again, I ask you to wait it out. Not too many have the tapes right now, although it might seem otherwise due to daily posts from excited EDA who just received their tapes. There was no missing a "first opportunity", there was a "date of eligibility" deadline. If you made the date, you got in the tree, if you missed the date, you try later on your own as I posted in my message earlier tonight to the "newbies". Atlantic is throwing away money here, and Tori is proof that the money is there to be made if they would go about it properly. There must be a reason the suits aren't following this potential gld mine, but I don't know what it is. I'd pay $12.99 for a limited edition Jewel EP; and that's a HUGE profit for Atlantic.
