The thing to do is just let it slide. When my roomates heard about me going to JS and me sending for the JS tapes, they had a field day. Wearing the F*@! You, I'm Sensitive shirt around the house doesn't go without some comment about me being a fag. Oh, I'm sorry. Maybe I should just crank up the Dave Matthews or the Blues Traveler or whatever college music I'm SUPPOSED to be listening to. I'd rather search for the YWMFM video on VH1 than watch yet another rerun of Saved by the Bell. My roomate owns like 12 Rush albums, does he catch flack? No. I own a couple Jewel boots and compilation albums, and suddenly I'm obsessed. And forget it if WWSYS or YWMFM does come on the screen. Actually, the reports of my demise were greatly exaggerated. But it seems I've gotten more press being OFF the list than on it! Get a cup of coffee, cause here is my abridged response to the last 60 digests: 1) Regarding the Harris Folklore, Dean Harris is hallucinating. Don't believe a word he says. He goes on like that due to some hang-up he has over his diminutive size (he's short, too)... 2) Selena isn't "Mother Harris", her real name is "Peaches." Ms. Peaches to those that don't know her that well. But she's making me proud with all these EDA events she's been organizing! 3) Please don't post illegal bootleg info on the list (especially the news list) for ANY reason. It spooks Atlantic and puts the Jewel folks in a tough spot. If you want it, buy it. Just don't discuss it here as it screws us all. I've never seen such a sweet deal with being able to get free live tapes so easily as on this list. I'll sum it up this way: DON'T SHIT WHERE YOU EAT! (...or where WE eat) And if anyone squats in the EDA kitchen, let's group-kick them in the butt. =) 4) As a major manufacturer of NJC posts, I'd like to see another classification added: "RSS" (Really Stupid Shit) ... this would include totally stupid posts with no connection to Jewel or anything remotely EDA-ish in nature. It would also include excessive QUOTING (doooh!), long "clever" sigs that never change and fail to amuse anyone but the poster (at least change them), and one-on-one pissing conteststol duel. BTW, any future discussion of "NJC" would also fall under the classification of REALLY STUPID SHIT... 5) Paul Kim, get your ankle-biting carcass back on the list and post those, well, WHATEVER those things were. While we've lost some really good EDAs lately, we've gained some interesting newbies. Participate in the list and meet these people in the flesh when you get the chance. It makes a world of difference, and you can't fully grasp the EDA ideology until you do. 6) We need to do something for Jeff, who runs this list and lets us keep in touch. If he needs equipment or storage media, EDAs should pitch in and get it for him. This list is certainly worth $10 to me, and I'm sure it is to alot of ya'll too. And of course, we have to abide by any of his wishes as well. 7) Mike stood up for my reputation (?) when someone (and I know who you are, you stinkbug) referred to me as a Jewel List "flaw". Well, the flaw is what makes a diamond precious, and in it's absence, the "perfect" cubic ziconium practically worthless. For those who don't get the analogy: Jewel List with "flaws" = one-of-a-kind Jewel List w/no "flaws" = cheap and sterile So I'll take the "flaw" comment as a compliment! (But you're still a stinkbug.) Okay, list old-timers, let's start seeing some thoughtful posts. With that I Sorry to hear you're so disappointed, but it really shouldn't be too much of a surprisse. If you think about it, that's really nowhere near enough for a decent video connection. The only reason it works for audio is because there are lots of parts in any audio signal that don't have sound, allowing for some compression. The limit of POTS is a single (mono) channel with a frequency response from about 250-4500 Hz uncompressed. Most of the sites with video are at least honest enough to admit you need at least 64K to SEE video, 128 gives tolerable levels. Most of the commericial videoconferencing systems use a pair of some type of digital modem, yielding somwhere between 112-128K of bandwidth. Again, these numbers only work because of the agressive compression used. Real high quality video uses a lot more bandwidth than that. You'll still see noticeable artifacting and other effects of the sort. > didn't think this would be so much of a problem. All I heard was WWSYS > and Chimebells and that was on Realaudio, which , I'm sorry, was not CD > quality by any stretch of the imagination! I wasted hours and hours on True. Real Audio broadcasts a near CD signal, but the reason it works at all is because it uses their own UDP based protocal that simply drops packets of data if they can't send to a given site fast enough. The new software claims it can get performance closer to CD quality from the archive feed, which I would think means they're willing to cache a little more, as it doesn't have to be in real time. > this. Read on.... Just walked in from the Gainesville show tonight. I'm torn to write whether it was a great show for it's uniqueness (I got a backstage pass, which I will scan for the website if anyone cares) ) or a bit of a disappointment and the worst of Jewel shows I've seen. Jewel was the headliner of a triple bill with a couple popular local bands. One of which is the University of Florida homecoming band this weekend. There were CBS trucks abound but I assume they were there for the Gators, not our beloved Jewel. I got there seemingly early at 5 o'clock till I found out that the show was to start at 6pm anyway. Technical difficulties forced the show to start about 7:30. The opening band played a song a gave up, due to both sound problems and the time schedule. The second band, Capitol recording artists Stir, sounded better for two songs before they had to leave. I assume this was all due to a flight schedule for Jewel's journey from Rhode Island and then to Houston (and to Columbia? Who's scheduling this, United's frequent flyer division?). I know there were supposed to be a few other EDA's there but I only met one whose no longer even on the list but occasionally checks the digest archives ------------------------------ From: brougdms@parkrapids.polaristel.net (Scott Broughton) Date: Fri, 11 Oct 1996 22:54:35 -0500 Subject: NJC: Lots of Stuff EDAs- First of all, thanx to everyone who wrote me about Foolish Games! I'm still working on the music, but the chords really helped! Again, if anyone wants to work on this thru snail mail so we can exchange music, e-mail me. Also, thanx for all the concert postings. I haven't seen one yet for Minnesota and area, but it shows how thoughtful people are to this list. I'm still waiting! I don't have that great an opinion on the pros/cons of bootlegs, but I think a bootleg tree is a great idea. If we can keep the money out of the people who illegally made it and still get the great sounds, it sounds good to me. And of course, I'd like to hear some more Jewel songs. POY is great, but just not enough! To: "I like the cranberries better than Jewel" (sorry, meant to reply to you but filed the digest away somewhere)- I think the cranberries are great too. Lately, Jewel's been more my favorite because I'm still on the "Jewel high" and probably still will be for a few more weeks after continuously listening to POY. (Again, I'm addicted so I need more!) I don't really have a favorite artist/group besides the one I'm really into at the moment, but the cranberries are right up there with Jewel. (And Poe too, altho I can't listen to the CD...don't ask.) Not to go on a Poe tangent, but does anyone else think 'Fly Away' is another beautiful song like Foolish Games? And speaking of the cranberries, what is the joke Jewel makes about Dolores? I'd really like to know. I bought POY thru BMG and was wondering why they have the little lightning(explicit lyrics) symbol by it. I can find nothing at all offensive about any of the songs, or anything deemed "corruptible". Jewel's music has had a very positive effect on me. Pieces of You especially has made me look at people in a whole other way. If anyone knows why, I'd really like to know. About radio play, I've never heard YWMFM on the radio yet. I don't listen to the radio much, but I've heard WWSYS a lot. I know, I know, maybe it's cause I'm not requesting it. I'm trying to find out the # to call. I know the station is 95.1 or 95X out of Fargo/Moorhead (ND/MN). This is just my opinion, but don't think Foolish Games should be played on the radio. For me, it was a HUGE treat just to listen to it after only hearing WWSYS. It's like that with the whole album. Of course, I like hearing great songs on the radio and it would be great hearing it and not expecting it, but I just like to make those "discoveries" on my own. Like noted earlier, 'Fly Away' is a great song but another one I think shouldn't be on the radio. Another "treat" was 'Dreaming My Dreams' and 'Joe'. I know it's selfish, both to the artist and potential fans, but it's just how I feel. Make sense? Okay, I've been doing something pretty bad and something that you all might be quite mad at me for. What I have been doing in this: dropping, literally dropping, copies of "Rare Angels" unmarked save for a setlist and a message, much like that on the tape insert which came with my copy: "For Music Lovers Only," no names or anything. Over the passed week, I have dropped a total of 24 copies. Each of which has found its way into the hand of a respective someone (whether it stayed there, a higher power only knows). I had not recieved any acknowledgement of my anonymous, and in my opinion, act of kindness nor was I expecting any but in second period when the announcements came on, I recieved a nifty surprise. One of the announcer kids said something to the effect of: "To whoever's passing these things out... They're great. Thanks for all of 'em." as he pulled out one of the tapes I had dropped. Now I just hope they know that it's a beautiful (physically and spirutually that is) by the name of Jewel Kilcher and that she has an album entitled "Pieces of You" out there. Who knows, maybe there'll be a bunch more Jewel fans at the next Jewel concert out this way. Anyway, besides all that self-righteous spouting, I really did post this with the subject being important. Does anyone mind? I would really like to know. I realize that some of these kids might be making copies of this tape and selling them or whatever but I felt it was something I could do to help Jewel. I think I'll start taping up signs next week, something like "Got a tape? It's Jewel. Buy her album" or something like that. So, please, if anyone at all out there had a problem with this, please speak up now and I will stop doing it and never do it ever again. Thank you for your time.
