I'm sure you are all proud of me for making it to my first Jewel Concert. Thank you, Thank you. I am too tired from the drive to go into great detail (you should feel = grateful). Whoever was running the sound boards sucked, but they were able to corre= ct most problems before Jewel came on stage. Due to this unexcusable fia= sco, all openers were cut to 1 or 2 songs so that Jewel could perform on = time. (She still had trouble with her monitor and guitar volume.) I took my 10 year old son with me and he was able to nab a Jewel/duncan sheik promo featuring "Race Car Driver" on it. It was the = last one the guy had and my son gave it his "I'm too cute to be denied" = act and of course, it worked. Anyone else got that? As it was festival seating, everything was fine until 5 minutes before = Jewel appeared. Everyone was laid back, sitting on the lawn - AND BAM = - - there was a mad rush to the front and everyone was standing, stacked = in like sardines. Now viewing became a problem for the shorter crowd. I was going to write= down her set, but it became a problem standing and trying to take pictur= es. She did play Chime bells and asked if she should go faster, well, = you know the response! Chime Bells and WWSYS (encore) got the crowd goin= g more than any other songs. I became very annoyed (I'm getting old) when I found the WHOLE CROWD talk= ing through a lot of her slower, less popular (in their eyes) songs. Fro= m what I've learned from all of you - I think they could have got her out= for another song, but after WWSYS the crowd dispersed. If it wasn't for = this list, maybe I would have done the same. She wore her proverbial blue blouse and much to my surprise - a very shor= t skirt (black, I think). BTW, my son weasled his way to the front row - AND SWEARS that Jewel look= ed at him, hhhmmmm, think I've heard that one before. Kids are great!!! Well, let's hear it from the others that were in attendance. Read on.... Just walked in from the Gainesville show tonight. I'm torn to write whether it was a great show for it's uniqueness (I got a backstage pass, which I will scan for the website if anyone cares) ) or a bit of a disappointment and the worst of Jewel shows I've seen. Jewel was the headliner of a triple bill with a couple popular local bands. One of which is the University of Florida homecoming band this weekend. There were CBS trucks abound but I assume they were there for the Gators, not our beloved Jewel. I got there seemingly early at 5 o'clock till I found out that the show was to start at 6pm anyway. Technical difficulties forced the show to start about 7:30. The opening band played a song a gave up, due to both sound problems and the time schedule. The second band, Capitol recording artists Stir, sounded better for two songs before they had to leave. I assume this was all due to a flight schedule for Jewel's journey from Rhode Island and then to Houston (and to Columbia? Who's scheduling this, United's frequent flyer division?). I know there were supposed to be a few other EDA's there but I only met one whose no longer even on the list but occasionally checks the digest archives ------------------------------ From: surfrank@32958.Surf.Tach.Net (Tach.Net User) Date: Fri, 11 Oct 1996 02:51:04 -0400 Subject: GAINESVILLE CONCERT WAS A BLAST!!
