That song deserves to be a MEGA-hit for Jewel >and it won't get played. Something is wrong here, huh? You may be right, but each of those singers had a breakout hit--and if memory serves me correctly, all of them were ballads (Whitney-Greatest Love of All, Celine-Power of Love, Mariah-Vision of Love), except for Madonna. IMHO, a ballad would be more likely to get airplay, especially FG, because more stations would start playing it, like some of the "soft rock" stations that favor artists like you said above. Of course, some of the stations that are playing WWSYS, or YWMFM, may not play FG because it doesn't fit into their "alternative (their word, not mine)" format. I'm contradicting myself here, aren't I? >I therefore feel it will be a HUGE mistake for Atlantic to release >FG next. Either one should be GREAT and a fast >chart climber. If the promotion is right, don't think it would be a HUGE mistake, but a calculated risk--again, see my comments above. I do agree with this--a single off the new album might be just what is needed to boost exposure. Does anyone think that Atlantic might do with Jewel the same thing they did with Tori Amos last year (releasing Caught a Lite Sneeze on the internet first)? Do you think that might help? Plus, I think Atlantic might want to do a little more promotion. Hi all, A lot of people wrote me privately about treeing the material recently booted. It seems like a decent idea. Heres what I've heard: To help eliminate the desire for EDA's to purchase the unauthorized CD thats been mentioned recently, I have been told a few EDA's will be making the Tower Records appearance available in a "soon to be announced" single tape tree. I'm not sure who exactly will be doing this. I have also supplied 2 other EDA's with perfect copies of both the Tower Records performance & the KROQ appearance earlier the same day. Both are excellent recordings. I told both to feel free to spread them around the list. Between these various EDAs, it will hopefully get to anyone who wants it. I know many of you have this already. Share it with others so no-one(that is an EDA) wants to buy it. Stay tuned for details FROM THEM when they are ready to do this. Jewel was standing , sans guitar, in the middle of a stage. To her left was a piano, to her left was a cello and a violin, and she was in the center singing "Foolish Games". It might have been from the same night as the Melissa Etheridge concert, 'cause she was wearing the same black pants with the white stitching, but for the Duets, she was wearing a jacket, and on this, she was wearing a plain black t-shirt ( shut up, okay ? Yes, I notice what's she's wearing !! ) . It was really beautiful... and it was the version that's gonna be on the CD. Great. Ahh... Hypothetical Situation: Let's say that people have heard some Jewel and they don't like the POY sound. Since her new album carries a different sound I think she could change the opinion of some of those who are quick to judge; they might not only buy the new album when it is released but they might even pick up POY and give it another chance. I think releasing a song like "Carnivore" or "Love Me Just Leave Me Alone" would completely blow some people's minds. They would be thinking," is this the same person whos style I didn't really like a while back." So I am all for Mikes' idea of releasing something new. I've never understood what the big deal about releasing live performances is... especially for artists like Jewel who are really great live. Actually, hearing her live has helped my opinion of her a lot. Vocally she seems to do everything I've been told to do in my vocal training almost effortlessly. Anyway, what I'd really like to see in the future is record companies sending sound engineers on tour with their artists to record and mix every performance. As it becomes easier to burn CDs on the spot, the company could hook up with record stores to sell copys of performances to anyone who wanted one. Maybe you could even order a copy of a concert you go to and pick it up at a store near you when it's done. When you think about it, it makes a lot of sense. It costs the company and the artist almost nothing. If word gets around about a spectacular live performance, the artist could end up making a lot of money while satisfying their fans and putting bootleggers out of business. Hell, if people are that worried about crappy shows hurting their artist they could probably prohibit radio from playing them. I dunno... it makes sense to me at least...
