Here's the explanation: I was listening to my Jewelstock tapes (thanks Mr. BB, the whole tape crew, and Selena...the world's greatest branch!) while working out tonight and nearly killed myself. Halfway through my second set of bench press I started cracking up (It started with "Those damn Harris Brothers") and I coudln't finish my set. For those of you who don't lift, imagine a 200 pound bar lying across your chest. Well Jewel kept getting funnier and funnier and the more I laughed the more oxygen I wasted and I realized (after my face turned blue) that I couldn't breath with the bar across my chest. Anyway, I eventually rolled it off without breaking any ribs and just lyed on the ground in mortal pain, laughing my ass off. So I hope everyone out there learns from my mistake, my suffering will be worth it if I can just save one person from this fate :) - -- Sinjin@ecn.com Lifeguard, Philosopher, Poet City of Angels JS96 ------------------------------ From: theDV8@aol.com Date: Mon, 07 Oct 1996 16:49:05 -0700 Subject: alt.music.jewel??? This endeavour turned into Mission Impossible this weekend when my ride forgot to plan away from her classes this Tuesday. My own substitute ride -- Christine (The Car Formerly Known As Lazarus) -- ran into a Shakespearean dilemma: "To run or not to run? Who cares as long as it fooks Carter's life up?!" I called Budget rental and the estimated price for the Fresno trip was $50. Alas, no "Train Song" for me. No "Face of Love," now my second favorite Kilcher Song. And no stolen cars or red vs. blue high caliber crossfire. I guess I'm not totally sorry to be missing this; besides, she'll come closer to home -- anywhere between San Francisco and Monterey -- and I'm there WHATEVER the hell happens to my car or my friend's absence of spontaneity. So I am stranded in SCruz this Tuesday, but not without some consolation prizes. First, we've got this new Rea#$%#dio Intzzzzzzzrnt BrOOWWPcazzzt coming up on Friday, so I DO get to hear a new Jewel performance, or static-plagued parts of it, after all. I just got my JewelStock tapes last Friday, so I have 270 minutes of that bliss, too. And I'll be seeing Dick Dale, Weezer, the Bridge School Benefit, and maybe even Tool during the coming weeks. Speaking of Tool, THAT'S who's playing at the Warfield on the 21st, not JEWEL. We don't get much radio here on the UCSC campus, and what we do get is plagued by Atmospheric Dyslexia. At first it sounds like a good idea, one that had occured to me before, but at second glance you discover that it does present problems. For example... The JS tapes. How would anyone know who was an EDA and who was only looking to get the tapes for bootleg CD making purposes? Anyone could access the newsgroup and find out about the availability of such recordings which should only be available to fans of Jewel. The end result would be that we would not have the Jewelstock tapes at all. Also we would have to deal with even more posts (for those were are complaining). There would be people who would find the newsgroup, post a few times and not ever come back. Joining this list as it is now involves some kind of commitment, like a full mailbox. Not having a full mailbox would be nice, but I think it is something we will have to put up with for the good of the list. Will this trend become the new plaid fad? > Well I had thought along similar lines when I first heard of Jewel. Something like, "Wow, there's all these great female musicians; where are they all coming from?" The answer, I found (is blowi.... err, neva'mind). That is, they've been here all along, we just haven't noticed them through all the glamour and media saturation of the big, loud, public-image-is-everything rock bands. But these performers, both men and women, have faithfully been playing their music, which is possibly the oldest music around (tracing back to Celtic bards in northern Gaul). People call it folk, but I prefer how Jewel describes it -- honest. Perhaps what we're seeing now is the end of this fad called rock-and-roll. The old institutions of rock are failing and the solid traditional sounds are surfacing again to take its place. Well, I don't think so. More likely this is a brief wind break in the tempest. Popular music today is based on the formula. Record execs don't look for talent they look for a formula they can sell. It's easy to hype it, and easier to make money off of. Motown, in the fifties, was all about selling the formula. They took the Beatles and turned it into a formula. The big stadium shows of the seventies and eighties, and then the "glam rock" period. And most recently with grunge. But this time it was too short-lived and there was no formula to take its place. So we have this period where artists who don't follow the formula have a better chance to shine through. You can tell already that the execs are trying to turn this into a formula; they won't succeed. There'll be another formula shortly and we'll see it advertised on the Billboard charts and the awards shows. The artists coming up now like Jewel will have the benefit of being known that they won't fade away so quickly. But the future artists who will follow her, they'll have to endure the obscurity of "not fitting the formula." It doesn't matter though. It's never about being popular, or making lots of money -- it's doing what you love and that's making music. It will never be forgotten because there are always people looking for truth. And it will never fade away because it's an extension of our souls. And as long as we have the desire to live, there will be music.
