Mass calling of radio stations outside your area can backfire quite easily. Some radio stations have special shows (talk shows, oldies, whatever) on at various times. Some of them with 800 numbers have payed the extra to know the number of who's calling them, and since 800 is a commercial line that they pay for, Caller ID Blocking doesn't work the same way. In short, it's easy for this to go wrong. If you're not familiar with the radio market (geographic area) involved, it's easy to make a mistake that tips them off. Radio stations don't take kindly to this sort of thing. Sometimes the artist is even blamed for it, hurting their chances even more. Please consider carefully before you try to deceive radio stations into thinking you're a legitimate listener. It may be better to appoach this as a letter writing campaign (which does still work) along the lines of "When I'm in the Boston[/NY/whereever] area, I like to listen to your station. I've been hearing this song out here at school called "You were meant for me" and I was wondering if you're playing it out there? I think it's perfect for your station." It's a bit more honest, since you don't pretend to be listening RIGHT NOW, and if you ever do visit, there is a decent chance you will be cruising the dial (gee, with everything digital, does anyone recognize that as surfing the stations? I suddenly feel old) and will stop at that station if they play Jewel. Personally, I don't like the idea of trying to deceive stations into playing stuff. As bad as most are, they get worse if you abuse them into playing stuff. Jewel is on Atlantic, which already has some of the most aggressive and thorough promo people in the world, once they suspect hitmaker potential. They didn't before, since she was a brand new artist with no hits yet. As things stand, they may just be getting ready for a blitz, though I sort of doubt it. I suspect they still don't know what to make of Jewel. Does anyone have a recent press release/ promo kit? I'm wondering if it calls her a folk artist, since a lot of reporters who don't sound remotely familiar with the album have called her one. In any event, my point is simply to excercise caution before we start phone or letter campaigns. I wouldn't want to hurt her chances in a foolish attempt to help. A solution I would consider far more preferrable would be to organize local support groups. It doesn't take that many real listeners to get a station to pay attention. Ideas: 1) Get the entire office at your job to agree to listen to the target radio station. Send a Fax with everyone's name, telling them everyone there listens and wants the song. Note, we're talking individual people with radios, not any sort of builtin sound system. wouldn't want to get ASCAP mad ;) 2) Anything with paper. Yes, all those letters create landfill, since most places don't recycle. But it's a lot harder for a station to ignore physical paper than it is a phone call. Letters work. Faxes from offices work better, since it does suggest money, at least some from work. Stations usually assume people with time to call the request lines are high school kids who sit around and don't buy their advertisers products. 3) A more agressive letter. Instead of just asking them to play, ask the competing station what it would take to play. Tell them you and your friends/coworkers/etc would be willing to all switch to listening to them, if they play the song while your current station won't. Use their ratings fear that's holding YWMFM back, and turn it against them. 4) A more targetted approach. Grab a copy of R&R, or Gavin, or one of the other radio playlist journals. (You may have to hunt for it, neither is very common on the stands) Both list the Program and Music Directors' names. Contact these people directly, and ASK them, as a listener, how you can help the song. You may be surprised how candid a lot of them are. The PD and MD decide on the adds, so winning them over to the song is just as effective as making the song look popular. The idea is that you want to either indirectly show you're from the area (local businesses and postmarkings on the letters, etc) as well as making it clear you're not from a record label. With the phone calls, even if you get it right, a lot of stations have been hit by professional request teams. (or at least heard some silly rumors) If they get TOO big a jump in calls, they'll assume something must be up. take care, Ray Ray Wong PO BOX 6163 negativl@netcom.com, negativl@best.com Hayward, CA 94540-6163 Member #11537, Deborah Gibson International Fan Club Co-Founder and Charter Member, Sutton Foster International Fan Club ------------------------------ From: Jay Notte Date: Fri, 4 Oct 1996 13:27:43 -0400 (EDT) Subject: re: Paul Kim Hey, hey, hey now!
