I read, watch, and admire everything that she does. Needless to say she is my life. >> I dunno about this...but this would be one of the last things I would want to read if I were Jewel. I understand your admiration, nay, adoration, of Jewel, and can ( on the whole ) agree with you that she is one the most talented artists I know. However, if I were Jewel, I would be so frightened and shocked by a fan's willingness to give practically anything to hear and see me, it might force me into hiding. Look at it from her perspective. She's just writing poetry, enjoying what she's doing, and getting paid for it. Suddenly, she sees that _many_ people like her. Wowee! What an ego boost! ( So rightly deserved might I add ) But soon, she sees that people like her a bit more than what is normal ( whatever normal is ), and somehow she must react and deal with this appropriately. Personally, I'd probably head back to Alaska if I were her...but luckily, I'm not. Sonic Youth -Little Trouble Girl ------------------------------ From: SDFAngel@aol.com Date: Tue, 1 Oct 1996 17:32:51 -0400 Subject: Paughkeepsie show. Dear Angels, This show was a drag if I'd ever seen one. The only place to buy tickets was on site, no resavtions. I live over two hours away so I could go buy tickets early. So to aviod a sell out I got there at 3:00 pm. bought my ticket and for lack of something better to do hung out at the venue reading Dolphin digest(Miami Dolphins publication). I saw a lady putting up promo posters, so I offered to help and told her that they were valueble. She refused my help but gave me some posters. So I brought one of the posters back to the car and took the other poster and pen back to the venue just in case lightening strikes again. I saw security roping off an area as a line, so I stood in the front. One at a time people started coming. Security open the ropes around 6:15 or 6:30, the crowd was split so I didn't get front row but I got second row center. The first lead off singer was a former marist student called Bill Paterson, he was very good, the second was a a group from NYC and damn did they stink. Finally Jewel took the stage. The crowd roured. An overweight man behind me yelled! "Will you marry me?", "I want to save your Soul" Jewel snickered. She opened up with the first Jewel song I ever heard live, "Pieces of You" with the references to Delores and Keano Reeves. Then she asked for requests although she only took some of them. She also promised to yodel at the end to quite down the assholes. They still yelled yodel continously. She finally did yodel and they screamed so loudly no one could hear the yodeling anyway. I don't get Jewelfans. She did a second encoure after everybody stood up. So we did a little standing room only action. After the concert I went to the people I knew were taping the concert and tried to get a copy for the list. They said it's illegal and they'd need someone more official then a fan to ask. So I have their bussiness card Mr. BB if you care. Anyway I walked out to find a mob of people in the hall, so it was no secret that Jewel was inside them. She signed and smiled nicely for her fans one at a time. Time was of the essence so her tour manager Doug pulled her away toward the back door. More fans waited out front but thought. Wait, if they weren't in a rush he wouldn't ave pulled her away I thought. So I headed to find Jewel's car which I could identify thanks to Selena. It was parked in the back alone. So I went to the car and a security person found me and told me I wasn't aloud there without a backstage pass. So I went and got a backstage pass and put it in my pocket so I could show it if anyone asked. Then I went back to Ms. Kilcher's car. to wait but far enough away so I wouldn't be seen by security. Doug, Jewel and the fellow in charge of campus achtivities came out. Doug looked at me, then turned to Jewel. She must have approved because he waved me over to them. I walked over timidly and stood next to Jewel, she was all smiles but I could tell she was exhaused. I still had my pen and poster in hand but there is a time to fire a pen into a singer's hand and a time not to. So I didn't. Her relaxation was incredibly flatering to me. It's as if she had a long day part of which was making the impression of an angel on her fans but with me she could relax. Doug got directions to get off campus to the airport to catch their flight back to California. SDF:Good show Jewel, thank you. she smiled and waved Jewel:Take Care. I never though Jewel would bring me backstage at her concert, and be comfortable with me like her friend. I guess I met her four times plus three times just for autograph sessions, but they don't count. If Jewel wasn't a singer, I'd really like her as a person. If Jewel wasn't a person, I'd really like her as a singer. I'll be the first to admit that when I feel something strongly I tend to go overboard but I'm not stupid, such as stalking someone nor do I lack a concious, a sense of respect for that persons privacy and wellbeing. There are some people out there though that do go to far with this and do endanger the ones they supposedly love(need for possession or something) and if I were a celeb, I might be a little worried every time I go in public whether or not this would be the time that one fan went to far. It takes a brave person, such as Jewel, to be out there constantly working, especially as many shows as she does. I would imagine that this thought does cross her mind so please be careful in wording and admiration and keep a safe distance for respect of the one we all hold so= dear. > elvis ------------------------------ From: Victor Igor Wasylczenko Date: Tue, 01 Oct 1996 13:24:04 -0700 Subject: Re: Anything Are you sure your not an Abba fan? Ok, Tom Proven and I have been discussing this and I decided to throw the idea out here to see what people think. Tom found out that our list was born on Feb. 19th. We both think that it would be cool if we could plan some kind of gathering for this, a sort of birthday party. I realize not everybody would be able to make it, but maybe we could plan several parties at various locations. It's on a Friday, so we would have a whole weekend to work with. So what does everybod think?? With Love, Laura ------------------------------ From: "STEVE SALOMON" Date: Tue, 1 Oct 1996 10:26:45 EST Subject: LC/JC-My 2 cents! Angels, It's been a little bit since I've last written (not including NJC w/ Transformers and Nintendo!), but I felt it important to put my 2 cents in regarding the bootleg cd issue. I joined this list in late June, JUST in time to find out about JewelStock(which I was VERY fortunate to attend!). My reason for joining the list? Simple - to find out important and interesting information on my favorite angel, Jewel, and to meet new and exciting people with varied backgrounds that have one major thing in common; their love and respect for/of Jewel. I wasn't out to prove anything, like I'm the BIGGEST fan because I'm on the list. I wanted to be a part of her career(as a fan) and do everything I could to help her grow(spreading the word on Jewel to other friends, MTV and VH1 on-line, etc.). When I attended JS, I found MANY people who knew PLENTY more than I did, along with having many bootleg tapes and promo cd's(at the time, all I had was PoY). I was so, I don't know, mystified, in awe at the amount of devotion and dedication that was given off by the other members, especially by those who spent many hours and plenty of money to bring the whole concept of "JewelStock" together! I saw Gerrit with his MANY tapes of Jewel, and was overly excited when he gave me a list of his bootleg tapes, and said that he would tape anything he had for me, along with anyone else, as long as you provide the tapes! That is truly a sign of a true fan; giving to others who may not have what you do. Isn't that what Jewel has taught is? That we should give to others out of the bottom of hearts, not with the greediness of our minds. That we should GIVE, and NOT sell! Isn't that the whole basis for this list? When I joined, that was the incredible impression I got, and saw it played out splendiferously at JewelStock. People giving, whether it be information, tapes, kindness, friendship, etc. Being at JewelStock was almost a religious experience for me. Here are people from all around the country taking a pilgrimage to see and spend time with Jewel, whom we all look up to as a rolemodel, as an artist, and as a friend. I really felt a "familial" bond while at JS. The way everyone interacted with each other. The fun everyone had. The interesting conversations. That's what it's all about! I feel, however, that those ideals may be slipping. Reading Mike's message on the bootleg cd idea of JS truly disgusted me! How can people be soo greedy? As list members, we have been given the opportunity of a lifetime; a gift from Jewel, to us, her greatest and most trusted fans. How can people abuse that? May I remind those of you who are greedy that Jewel constantly sung at bars, coffee houses, etc, just to keep a roof over her head and be able to eat every day! Not everyone is as fortunate as some of us! Jewel constantly reminds us of the tragedies and misfortunes of life, and that we should give it our all to make sure that others who are less fortunate than ourselves receive whatever help/information/etc that they need. Jewel is GIVING us these JS tapes; it's a priveledge, NOT a right! Why abuse that priveledge, that trust? Yeah, sure, it'd be great to own a bootleg cd. A sign of a TRUE fan......a true fan of distrust and greed! The whole idea of making and selling these things is not only a travesty to this list, but a travesty to she who this list is made for/of/from....Jewel herself! I may not have every Jewel recording ever made. I may not have as many tapes and promo cd's as some of you, but I rather live with what I have and respect Jewel's wishes than to be the one with EVERYTHING, including bootleg cd's and the like, and totally destroy what Jewel and this list is all about. I said earlier that I joined this list without the intention of being the BIGGEST fan, and I've stayed true to that. My intention is to be her BEST fan, by abiding by her dreams and wishes, and helping those in need. I met many "BEST" fans at JewelStock. There are too many to name all, but just a few; Mike, Sinjin, Akira, Liz, Gerret, Tom, Jon, Selena, among MANY others. They are only a small portion of the MANY people on this list, including myself, that respect Jewel and are ready to do almost anything to help out others. In conclusion, I feel that bootleg cd's are bad to this list and are bad to Jewel. If you want to get them or make them/sell them...Fine. Go ahead. But don't EVER even CONSIDER calling yourselve's "TRUE" fans of Jewel! If you are a fan, you would NEVER do anything against Jewel's wishes. To give is possibly the greatest gift you can give. To give with your heart is even better. To give with greed and profit is to damn yourself, and will ultimately lead to the downfall of society. A final note: Angel's receive their wings by doing a great deed; by sacrificing themselves for the good of others. On this list, we are the "Everyday Angels". I think it's about time that some people start growing up and living up to that name if you are TRULY worthy of receiving your wings. For the rest of us who continue to give; we ARE Everyday Angels.
