I know that just yesterday I was scrolling through old digests on the website and randomly opening old digests from the winter and spring just for nostalgic reasons. Reliving the past, I guess, and seeing how different the list used to be (and, for me personally, how much better it used to be. My opinion). Also, with the other lists that I'm on, we don't do huge gatherings of members at concerts for the artist, but that is for several reasons: Ecto (Happy Rhodes)- she doesn't do too many live show, but those that she does are heavily attended by Ectophiles when they can fit them into their schedules. She also mainly plays in Philly or NY, so it is difficult for many of her fans to drop everything to go see her. otherwise, ectophiles do manage little get togethers to see lots of other artists beyond just Happy because of shared musical tastes. ie. Susan McKeown in NY, several ectophiles including Jeff Wasilko went to this show this weekend. I know that I have met several ectophiles at Falcon Ridge this summer and was supposed to meet more at a show in NoHo this september, but the show was cancelled. FTE (sarah mclachlan)- she just isn't touring right now. The shows she did do this summer (only 6 or 8) were gathering points for fumblers who could make them. The two in California were group affairs for a handful of fumblers who got to meet sarah, and the Vancouver Lilith's Fair show was also a meeting point for more fumblers. I also managed to meet some fumblers in Philly this summer at the WXPN singer-songwriter weekend (as well as some ectophiles). Followers (eleanor mcevoy)- well the list only has around 50 members and is relatively brand new and more than half are across the pond, so it's a bit difficult to organize gatherings. although, rachel and jason shaw of both the jewel and eleanor lists went to the show in NoHo with me. THe way i see the lists is this (the ages are not the average, but just the overall feeling that i get from the conversations): ecto is the adult (maybe in its late 20's early 30's) list with an established forum of sharing and fun maturity. fte is the young adult list (mainly in its 20's with a few 30 year olds) with a loose yet intelligent way about itself (kinda like a gen x movie where the adults can afford to sit around and philosophize and have fun but also be serious and worry about how the real world will affect). Very family. EDA is the teenager list with lots of gabbing and sharing of gossip and friendliness and confrontations. Kinda like high school but a little better. Lots of goofiness and silliness and constantly changing (puberty anyone?) and unsurity. Followers is...I don't know yet. It hasn't established itself yet. that's it Paul Kim ------------------------------ From: Katie McCurry Date: Mon, 30 Sep 1996 23:22:57 -0400 (EDT) Subject: ( this was from the Ani D. list)Jewel (fwd) Hey Guys- I thought this was weird- KATIE ><}}}"> - ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Mon, 30 Sep 1996 16:11:10 -0500 (EST) From: CBOHANNON@butler.edu Reply-To: ani-difranco@europe.std.com To: ani-difranco-digest@world.std.com Subject: Jewel OK, I've been avoiding posting anything (I don't know, it's just a phase or something.... something.) Andrew Levstein lev@idirect.com From the Cyberpop column in the Toronto Star Newspaper, Monday September 30, 1996. (Cyberpop is a weekly column written by Star Music columnist Peter Howell on music/internet related issues) CALIFORNIA TICKET NAZI STOMPS ON SPRINGSTEEN FANS By Peter Howell Pop Critic Fans of TV's Seinfeld love the outrageous Soup Nazi chef who yells "No soup for you!" to diners who breach his strict rules of decorum. Fans of Bruce Springsteen, however, don't love the Ticket Nazi, the name given the California box office bureaucrat who denied them show tickets in an incident that has become a hot discussion topic on the internet. The Ticket Nazi was the woman in charge of the Arlington Theatre box office in Santa Barbara on a recent Saturday. Her job was to hand out wristbands to people seeking tickets to an Oct. 25 Springsteen show. The woman didn't know or didn't care that the wristbands, common throughout the concert industry, are designed to ensure fairness. You line up for a numbered band, then wait for your number to be called to buy tickets. According to the posts on the Luckytown mailing list, mirrored elsewhere on the net, the Ticket Nazi handed out wristbands on the basis of age, place of residence, appearance and sheer whim: Here are some of the "No Ticket For You!" horror stories: *A 13-year-old girl who had lined up for hours was told by the Ticket Nazi she could not have a wristband because only people over 18 could purchase tickets. The Springsteen show is an all-ages event. *A guy who spoke up in defence of the teenager was told, "I don't like the tone of your voice. You don't get a wristband either." *People from as far away as Los Angeles, New Jersey (Bruce's home state) and even Switzerland were denied wristbands. The Ticket Nazi accused them of being outsiders attempting to scalp tickets. She demanded to see the driver's licence of every purchaser, to prove their city of residence. *If the people looked seedy, or scowled at the Ticket Nazi, they heard a variation of the cry, "No wristband for you!" *The Ticket Nazi demanded 25 cents for each wristband, which are normally handed out free of charge. Some frantic fans ended up giving her dollar bills because she wouldn't make change. The reign of the Ticket Nazi may be coming to a swift end. One of the many people she snubbed works for a California State assemblyman, and he's working up a political firestorm, asking fellow ticket victims to e-mail him their tales of abuse. A Santa Barbara civic official is also investigating. ------------------------------ From: Mike Connell Date: Mon, 30 Sep 1996 22:55:00 -0400 Subject: Bootleg CD - It IS a threat - PART ONE...please read EDAs, I wrote (about the bootleg CD): > > I realize that "Miscellaneous" is wide open, but I just never though the > > News-list was a venue to advertise things that Jewel and her management > > are clearly against. Someone responded: > I didn't see this as an advertisement. I saw it simply as a note of > interest to Jewel fans. Sorry, I must disagree. Maybe "advertisement" was the wrong word, but the message that that first announced the CD has the track listings & the "Company name" that was on the label. That's pretty darn close to advertising, if you ask me. Why include the track listing if it's not "advertising". It may not havbe been his intent, but it was an advertisement. It does not belong on the "news" list by the news lists' definition, IMHO. The same person said: > This mailing list should be for topics related to Jewel period. I don't > see what's wrong with sharing information. I agree that bootlegs are > bad for the artist, not to mention illegal, but I don't think > specific guidelines of what we can and can't discuss is a bit extreme. That's not what I was suggesting...guidelines. I'm just trying to make everyone realize what is at stake here. You *few* EDAs, go ahead, continue defending bootleg CDs by blaming the record companies for their existence. Continue saying the companies deserve it. Then more EDAs will buy the d*mn things. They will then talk about them on this list. We will then stand to lose our connection to Jewel, or at least the "condoned" ability to tape her shows. If the logic doesn't seem clear, it will be in my next post shortly after this. It's a real eye-opener. You folks just have no idea what Alan and I and a few branches have been dealing with the last month. It's all in the next post. Same person said: > We are all, for the most part, adults here. We can choose whether to buy > this CD bootleg in question or not. Yes, but MANY newbies and even veteran EDAs do not fully realize the harm these items can cause an artist and this list specifically. The eyes of many of them need to be opened. I know of at least one veteran EDA who planned on finding as many of these bootleg CDs as he could, but I have been told he seems to have changed his mind after reading my post. > Like I said before, many EDAs already have this recording on tape that > we've traded for, not bought or sold. Yes that is so, but many, many MORE (especially newbies) do NOT have this recording on tape. There are over 700 subscriptions to the 3 lists right now. Just before JewelStock it was 475. It stands to reason that *most* of those new 225 people don't have ANY Jewel concert tapes. The CD presents a way too easy method for them to get the recordings, rather than trade a tape. We have to show THEM that the tapes are available, and to avoid the bootleg CD. > I don't think this CD bootleg will make enough money to cover the > cost to make. That's my 2 cents. How much do you think it takes to mass produce these things? These are more profitable than popcorn at a movie theatre. I'm not kidding. If the bootlegger mass produced this CD, and since the maker appears to be European (they DO mass produce these things), it is likely he/she did. At a modest production level each CD costs about a buck or two. They'll be selling for $10 to $20, maybe more. Looks like a heavy profit to me. If you don't think they'll sell for that much, think again. "Save The Linoleum" regularly goes for $20 and two list members in the last 2 months spent $54 and $75 for "Save The Linoleum", a 7 track CD. That's just EDAs who have a good source for getting many tapes, i.e. this list. Many of the thousands of other Jewel fans out there that don't have a computer will be more than happy to shell out 10 to 20 bucks for a CD with 19 tracks on it. PART TWO...please read This is directed to the few who refuse to truly understand the threat to the authorized tape treeing perks that this list enjoys, all because of the open discussion of the bootleg CD. Sorry Garrett, you are wrong. (It's not your fault though, we've been keeping a secret, all for good reason) I have to tell you folks this now, to help you understand this. First, the most blaring EDA case: Alan and I have been having a problem with this for weeks! He has been in contact with Lenedra about an EDA who told Alan AT JEWELSTOCK he intends to make CDs of the JewelStock tapes and SELL THEM!!! Alan told him the wrongs of that and he then told Alan, "well, I'm gonna do it anyway!" Open your eyes folks. We KNOW what we are talking about. This VERY PERSON wrote ME two weeks ago and told me of his intent to make CDs for a cost of about $700. He did not mention his intent to me. He wanted to get the best copies he could and "digitally clean them up" to make CDs. He wanted to offer CASH to Alan for the tapes. He just didn't know "how to do it without insulting Alan". He asked me for advice on how to get them from Alan. He asked me for advice!?! What do you think his intent was this time? What? Private listening? Alan has been offered CASH for DATS by OTHER *EDAs* who wanted to make CDs of JewelStock.(Their intent unknown, stands to reason some intend to sell) Some of them approached him before JewelStock, some after. EDAs = *anyone* on the 3 lists Alan was offered $5000 by a non-EDA for DATs of Jewelstock. $5000! I was EMAILed by 5 EDAs who mentioned they'd like to make CDs of JS. (they all wanted "first generation" copies or DATS) Eleven Branch requests wanted DATs, even though Alan and I specified in our posts no DATs, no VHS Hi-Fi. Five became branches, two became reserve branches. The other 4 I never "saw" before or since, except they became leaves. (i.e. "they came out of the woodwork"...think about it) I was EMAILed by about three non-EDAs offering "money" for DATs (which I don't even have) I was approached by about another four non-EDAs who wanted DATs but did not offer money. Now, I do realize that only one of the EDAs so far offered cash and at least at one time admitted he wanted to *sell* CDs, but logic tells me that at least some of the other EDAs who approached us had selling in mind. The non-EDAs who offered money obviously had selling in mind. It's a BIG business out there. They don't give a shit about Jewel neither, just $$$$$$$$$$$$. If this talk of bootleg CDs continues, it may be all over folks. The condoning of taping by Jewel & Lenedra will be in danger, and of course then, so will the trees. It may very well happen. In time it may. It could come to a halt anyway as she gains popularity, but it may end quicker as people buy more bootleg CDs. The more talk about the bootleg CDs on this list, and how the record companies are screwing us anyway etc, the more they will sell, and then more they will make, and then more they will sell, and the quicker the "condoned" taping will halt. Why? Because as she gains in popularity, the more in demand the recorded shows will be. You don't feed a shark.
