That is one better videos out the market right now. It is an excellent song, with pertinent, tasteful, sensual visuals. eMpTV instead plays more Beavis and Butthead... I just watched the video again and am finding that I like it so much more each time. It is so...right! =) btw...Fiona Apple makes a guest appearance on Crossroads and they make very small mention of Jewel in the interview. And...has anyone else seen the "Ironic" video by Alison? Isn't it great? =) =) =) =) Small solution to THAT problem. Everyone down- load mIRC (or another) and get into the chat room everynight. mIrc is only 600K. In this manner, we can chat individually or as a group everyday. We don't need to arrange times. Everybody come, every night. The room is #Jewel. What are you waiting for? He gave me a sneak preview sheet for vol. 9 which streets on Oct. 1st. Wow! On the cover is an awesome picture of Jewel. She is the featured artist for this issue. Here is a quote from the preview sheet: "All eyes are on Jewel who discusses her passion for surfing (and we don't mean the Net) and performs her top ten hit "WWSYS" EXCLUSIVELY for Launch." I wonder if it's a different version than the one on POY. It retails for $9.95. I will probably get at least 10 copies so if anybody doesn't have access to Launch let me know and maybe I could send a few out to whoever wants one. Also, I just received a few promo singles from Atlantic that have Jewel and Duncan Sheik on them. The Jewel song is "Race Car Driver." It was the first time I heard this song. It was very cool. They came with a booklet that was hand-written by Jewel(i think-it was hand-written, I just don't know if it was by her). It contained lots of her poems and background information about several of her songs. It was very interesting to see how some of her songs originated. Anyways, I'm sorry to ramble on for so long. Until the European Community (EC) pushed Italy, Companies used a loophole in Italian law to "legally" publish bootlegs Check any foreign discs which are outside of a band's "normal" catalog and you'll often see an Italian publisher. Bands receive no royalties. The artist (our beloved Ms. Kilcher) is the one who suffers....moreso than the record label. The worst part of this is that many bands do NOT allow taping because of fear that such a bootleg will end up on the open market...Who loses, we all do: The record company loses-unit sales The Artist loses-royalties YOU LOSE-You can't tape shows (Thank you Jewel for allowing us to enjoy your concerts after the fact); You pay a price of $25.00 or more (as opposed to $16.99 maximum list for a new single-disc title). And, CD prices stay higher because record companies pass on the cost of enforcement of bootlegs by the RIAA to us, the consumer. Think about this when you purchase that bootleg... Just to note, I am NOT talking about promotional or limited release items like PBFGB or STL.... Also, if you go to a record store with REALLY great prices, and you notice a hole or a cut in a CD jewel case, that is a "cutout" an album sent by the record company as a comp. to large retailers and the like. I agree with you that it's a shame that people who sell bootleg CD's are ripping off the artists, but some of the blame belongs to the record companies. The whole reason bootleg CD's are around is because a market for this material exsists and the record company, for whatever reason, has decided not to met that demand. They're shooting themselves in the foot, if you ask me. Why should those companies complain about losing money on live bootlegs when they themselves have offered no live material? Obviously, I'm making broad generalisations here. Some companies *have* taken this common sense approach to stopping bootleging/pirating with official releases of live material. But at least those companies have right to complain, and they are regaining some of their lost profits/royalties. Also, I'd like your professional opinion, Michael, on another thought of mine. I once heard that it costs record companies less to manufature a CD than it does to make a cassette tape. Is this true? If so, then the record companies are ripping *us* off, and I shed not a tear for them if they lose a few bucks to bootlegers. So, in conclusion, I'd like to say that if there's no official releases of a band's live/rare material, then I just may buy a bootleg CD of that artist. That is, if I want it badly enough to pay the inflated price for it (yeah, I know they're ripping me off, too). I'll also continue jaywalking and ripping those "Do not remove this tag or God will strike you dead with a lightning bolt" tags from my pillows. If there is live material made available by the label, then shame on you bootlegers. Otherwise, shame on you record companies for your own stupidity. As far as the selling of Jewel bootlegs, "May God sritke you (the bootleger) dead with a lightning bolt". Although ther may be no commercial relases of Jewel's live/rare material, we have this wonderful mailing list where everyone can trade and share and live in peace and harmony n' all that jazz. Later :) - --Garrett ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V1 #627 ***************************
