The producer of "The Wizard of Oz In Concert" was driving across the country and he heard the interview. He was really impressed with Jewel's speaking voice and qualifications. When the producer arrived at his final destination, he asked his assistant to get a copy of Jewel's album. After the producer heard her singing voice, he knew she was perfect for the part. The first album I remember buying is kind of embarassing and I'm sure it will elicit some response from brother Dennis, but I'll tell you all anyway. It was the "Fonzie Album". Yes that's right. Fonzie from the Happy Days tv show. It had a bunch of fifties songs on it and a couple songs with Fonzie saying some of those cool sayings he used to say. "Sit on it", etc. Now stop the uncontrollable laughter you guys. Come on... I was just a kid. :) Now for my top five... in no real order. Wait... I can't just list 5 so I'm gonna be different and list 10. 1. POY (duh) 2. Bruce Springsteen Live 1975 - 1985 3cd set (not sure about years now) 3. Tchaichovsky's 1812 Overture (did I botch that spelling or what) 4. Elvis Presley - Top Ten Hits 2cd set (all his billboard top tens) 5. Fredrick Chopin (lots of piano concertos) 6. Hank Williams - top 40 hits 2cd set (Old Hank is still the best) 7. Mathew Sweet - Girlfriend 8 Jimi Hendrix - Are You Experienced 9. Saturday Night Fever soundtrack 10. It was par= t of=20 a "residential tour," where a performer sets up residence in a hub city and plays in diffe= rent=20 neighboring communities, rotating about once a week.=20 It's an inexpensive way for a record company to saturate a regional=20 market with a particular artist. It works well with self-contained solo musicians.=20 For Jewel, now 22, it seems to have worked very well, indeed. Her=20 spiritually-oriented, folk-influenced single, "Who Will Save Your Soul," rose to No. 11 in= =20 Billboard (this week it's at No. 14) and her "Pieces of You" debut album has sold more than a=20 million copies. She's become a top concert draw; she's now on tour in Australia.=20 "I'm in Sydney," she said over the phone, her young-girl voice sound= ing=20 stuffy from a cold. "It's a promo tour. `Pieces of You' just got released here. It's nic= e to=20 get out of America once in a while; you get tired of touring Ohio. Nothing against Ohio!"=20 Three years ago Jewel was sleeping in her van and playing in a coffe= e=20 house in San Diego. She spent her childhood in Homer, Alaska, singing with her father in= =20 small-town saloons - her first taste of show business - and living on an 800-acre homestead=20 without power or running water. She managed to spend her last two years of high school at=20 Michigan's Interlochen Fine Arts Academy on a vocal scholarship. There she got her first taste o= f=20 culture and embraced it, learning to play guitar and writing poetry.=20 From dead-end to recording contract After graduation she moved to California to be near her mother, who = now=20 manages her. She surfed and worked dead-end jobs as a secretary and a waitress.=20 Eventually she quit, finding playing in coffeehouses more appealing. So did record executives fro= m=20 Los Angeles who discovered her weekly sets.=20 Jewel eventually signed with Atlantic and in February 1995 released=20 "Pieces of You." It barely made a ripple, but the company stuck with her. They helped he= r=20 with the residential circuit, keeping her playing coffeehouses and clubs. She toured as a= n=20 opening act nationwide, sometimes solo, sometimes with a band.=20 "I had a band when I opened for Neil Young," she said. "I toured wit= h=20 him for four weeks before coming here. Working with Neil was awesome. He's such a sweet= =20 man."=20 But the work can also be grueling, and seemingly unending.=20 "I'm doing 40 shows in 30 days on this tour," she said matter-of-fac= tly.=20 "I sing in Washington (at the Puyallup) the day I get back."=20 But it wasn't road work alone that brought Jewel, now 22, to nationa= l=20 attention. Part of her visibility has come from TV. She's done regional and national shows,= =20 including all the late-night fare, where she got substantial attention. She also made = a=20 video for "Who Will Save Your Soul," her first single, and it was picked up by VH1, which led= to=20 more radio play. It was one of the first of a rash of music clips to be filmed in a publ= ic=20 bathroom.=20 The last sacred place "Funny isn't it?" she said, chuckling. "I started a trend. But it is= n't=20 just a joke. When I was a little girl in Alaska, I used to go outdoors a lot. That's how I got= to=20 know God, find beauty and simplicity. I got to be with myself and have silence around me,=20 which is important. You hear who you're going to become. You can concentrate in silence.=20 "So now, because my days are so full with people and meetings,=20 constantly, I go into the bathroom to be alone. It's just about the last place you can go to b= e=20 with yourself, to cry or get away from the kids or smoke a cigarette, whatever.=20 "It's the last sacred place," she added, laughing again.=20 "And I love the ironies in the video. We shot it for nothing so I go= t to=20 do most of it, decide on a lot of things. I don't know if anybody else sees them, but I do; I= did=20 them for me."=20 Somehow in the midst of the mayhem in which she now lives, she's=20 recorded 30 tracks for her next album.=20 "It's time to pick now. It's a burden, but it's a burden I prefer."=20 Jewel's appeal is Jewel. She's easy and funny, with a backpack of=20 stories. Her songs are melodic and accessible and she sings loops around them. She also kno= ws=20 how to embrace an audience, to play what it doesn't know it wants to hear. And she kno= ws=20 there is more than just this moment.=20 "I think you have to layer your work," she explained, "put in stuff = for=20 people to find down the line.
