(minus the junk-mail part, a funny story) I took out the "get rich" scheme part and just included the story...I laughed the entire time...I used to do this with my G.I. Joe trucks and model-rocket engines (C's and D's)...but with much less drama...they usually just tore down the road, hit some bump and went airborne, landing in the neighdor's rose bushes, or in one instance, in her convertable...I got to run really fast that day... THIS 1967 CHEVY IMPALA IS DEFINITELY FASTER THAN ACURA'S NSX The Darwin Award - It's an annual honor given to the person who did the gene pool the biggest service by killing themselves in the most extraordinarily stupid way. Last year's winner was the fellow who was killed by a soda machine which toppled over on top of him as he was attempting to tip a free soda out of it. And this year's nominee is: The Arizona Highway Patrol came upon a pile of smoldering metal embedded into the side of a cliff rising above the road at the apex of a curve. The wreckage resembled the site of an airplane crash, but it was a car. The type of car was unidentifiable at the scene. The lab finally figured out what it was and what happened. It seems that a guy had somehow gotten hold of a JATO unit. Jet Assisted Take Off - actually a solid fuel rocket that is used to give heavy military transport planes an extra 'push' for taking off from short airfields. He had driven his 1967 Chevy Impala out into the desert and found a long, straight stretch of road. Then he attached the JATO unit to his car, jumped in, got up some speed, and fired off the JATO. The facts as best as could be determined are that the operator of the Impala hit JATO ignition at a distance of approximately 3.0 miles from the crash site. This was established by the prominent scorched and melted asphalt at that location. The JATO, if operating properly would have reached maximum thrust within five seconds, causing the Chevy to reach speeds well in excess of 350 mph and continuing at full power for 20-25 seconds. The driver, soon to be pilot, most likely would have experienced G-forces usually reserved for f-14 jocks under full afterburner, basically causing him to become insignificant for the remainder of the event. However, the automobile remained on the straightaway for about 2.5 miles (25-30 seconds) before the driver applied and completely melted the brakes, blowing the tires and leaving thick rubber marks on the road surface, then becoming airborne for an additional 1.4 miles and impacting the cliff face at a height of 125 feet, leaving a blackened crater three feet deep in the rock. Most of the driver's remains were not recoverable, however; small fragments of one tooth, and hair were extracted from the crater and fingernail and bone shards were removed from a piece of debris believed to be a portion of the steering wheel. - --------------------------------------- Here's my opinion...the guy couldn't have strapped the "JATO" unit to an Impala...there's no place to...on the roof? The interior of the car would have reached tempertures to cook human flesh after three seconds, if it didn't tear the roof off first, leaving him with a nice, if not charred convertable... ------------------------------ From: ssf350@localnet.com Date: Wed, 18 Sep 1996 23:17:36 -0400 Subject: IMPORTANT PLEASE READ! I noticed a major breach of your rules by one of our EDA's. On her behalf I ask you to overlook her mistake because she adds so much "special-ness" to the list. She actually coined the word, never thinking it would be used to describe her. I'm talking about Amy. The rule she broke was changing her last name at a very critical time. You may have been confused when she signed off with the name Amy Gratitude. I can help you with the mystery. She included gratitude, 30 very sincere times. She was only trying to give you one gratitude for every day of the month. She must have added the last on to her name, just in case the month has 31 days. If that isn't convincing enough, let me give you somemore supporting evidence. You will recall, she was the one that shared her wonderful time at JS by bringing her mother. She is also the same person that shared with us the roots to her screenname. It is a dedication to her father she very much loved. She is also the same Amy that claims Oklahoma City as her birthplace, but has adapted to Jersey as if a native. Only a fearless Jersey native would have stood up to the lowlifes on the train the way she did. She stood up on behalf of womens rights, no, human rights, in a way that made all of us EDA's proud. To me she is a little bit Mother Teresa and a little bit Madonna. She is a fun loving person with a heart of gold. People that were with her at the NH concert described her as a "natural beauty", but I think they were describing more than just her appearance. So Mike, there should be no confusion if you come across Amy with the new last name. She is the same person that adds so much "special-ness" to this list.
