I'll blame Igor for bringing politics up so much. ;) I find myself the reluctant supporter of Wal-Mart, however. Igor wrote: > How about "Wal-Mart Sells Goldfish That Bounce". Don't the lyrics to "Love is a Good Thing" go something like, Watch out sister, watch out brother Watch our children as they kill each other with a gun they bought at the Wal-Mart discount stores. or something like that? I'm in complete agreement that too many children die, but are you really going to blame Wal-Mart for being less than appreciative of being accused of violating multiple federal felony laws? I'm as opposed to censorship as the next guy (I even maintain that the "Clear and Present Danger" ruling is itself a clear and present danger to our national security, but never mind that), but I'm hardly going to fault Wal-Mart for this one. If they wanted to be rude, they could very conceivably sue for defamation, etc. Unless someone has proof that they've been selling guns direct to kids, as the song implies? (a gun THEY BOUGHT AT, not simply FROM. makes the song far wordier, and goes from presenting an image of how commonplace it all is, to a specific insult hurled at Wal-Mart. "a gun from Wal-Mart" just seems a little less a personal attack, and a little more concerned with the kids themselves.) [non-sequiter re:wal-mart not selling guns anymore removed] I will say that I find it ironic that WalMart is faulted for not carrying a product that faults them for carrying a product. If we are to use a reason of morality to justify not selling one, then the emotional reason used to not sell the other seems equally valid. After all, the claim that music makes no difference was just discarded on this list with a resounding agreement that music DOES make an impact on lives. I'm unwilling to accept that anything could ever save lives (or souls) if it can't also take them. If music can help, then it most certainly can harm. Inspiration takes many forms, some of them destructive. > I like buying my records from real record stores, like Lou's Records, in > my area. Or if its going to be a major chain, I like Borders. My > favorite stores were Igor Records, but since they are all closed, I have > to settle for the next best thing. Certainly agreed. If you want to complain about censorship, fault places like Wal-Mart for selling records AT ALL, since they can't carry the selection of a real record store. The simple truth is, they're going to have to make decisions on what to carry, and it won't be every recording that's interesting. That they didn't like the idea of making their money off singing slander is at least an honest reason. It's the places that carry only the most popular artists that are killing a lot of small record shops off, as far as I'm concerned. It was when we moved away from full stock record dealers that people's exposure to non-charted went from being incidental to non-existent. Jewel Kilcher is playing at the Big Fresno Fair on Tuesday, October 8th, at either 7 or 8 p.m. (the organizers haven't decided yet). Tom Proven and I are sure-fire attendees, and I will likely be bringing one or two non-EDA friends to enjoy the fun. Admittance to the fair is $6.50, bought at the gate, and Jewel comes free with the admission. Our carpooling/meeting plans are still fuzzy, and their concreteness will depend on how many of you think you can make it. Tom will be driving from San Francisco, and I will be driving from Santa Cruz. We were thinking of meeting in Gilroy and packing into a single car when just the two of us were definite goers, but we can easily alter things should we get some more signups. I don't have any idea of what to do before or after the show; this thing is happening in the middle of classes and Fresno is three hours away from my campus, so the hang-out time for me and my entourage will likely be limited. But if somebody comes up with an irresistible party idea -- near impossible for Fresno I fear -- we'll try to stick around. So far I've detected interest from Barnabus (?) and Walter Fong in going to this show. Anyone else who intends to make the trek to the Agricultural Capital of California -- and occasional victim of airport-destroying tornadoes -- e-mail me or Tom, and we'll see what we can do about meeting. - - Carter "Jewel Can't Escape Me Now!"
