The Jewel list was actually formed as an offshoot of the Happy Rhodes mailing list. Come to think of it, the Milla list was as well. For those of you Jewelphiles who really love female singers, excellent song-writers, and if Kate Bush's voice doesn't drive you absolutely crazy, then I highly highly recommend you check out Happy's work. I'd start with Warpaint or Equipoise, but all of her albums are excellent (though a bit hard to find but they can be special ordered anywhere and are carried at quite a few stores now--including most Best Buy's and some SamGoody's Borders usually carries her as well). Kinda strange since this is the first night in about a month that I haven't listened to Jewel while falling asleep. At least read the whole thing before telling me I'm insane. I must warn you: it is rather long. Here goes: I was reading my mail. The first couple posts I read were Jewel vs. Alanis, but every post after that was an "I love you guys" post. Before I was done reading these posts, I had to leave for a volleyball game (my high school is ranked no. 5 in the nation right now). I was walking home from this game, when my family and I heard noises coming from a nearby house. We went inside, and the house was owned by an elderly couple who had an extensive collection of Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis games. My brother and I started playing a hockey game on Sega (he beat me! argh!) anyway, this game played music between it's periods, and after the second period, it played "Money" (one of my favorites) and "POY". As I was listening to this, I was thinking, "Hmm, I should tell the list about this." - ---I forgot what happened right here--- I was with EDA's before JS2, but I hadn't signed up for it. My only hope was a drawing that would send one lucky EDA, who hadn't signed up, to the concert to sing one song with Jewel, and sit on the couch closest to her. - ---I forgot what happened here--- I was back I my house, which was apparently some distance from the sight, and guess who shows up? JEWEL!!! I was so stunned that I didn't recall how we got to the street to the venue, and I hadn't dropped the books that I was carrying. Jewel and I were walking to the venue, and she asked me what I was carrying. I showed her the book (it was something about the Red Hot Chili Peppers. I was doing a report about Jewel, and Flea talked about her in the book). She said, "Oh, I LOVE (emphasis, not shout) them. What's the other one?" I showed her that one (the end of the title was "Insax Us", it was something about artists that liked to use explitives on stage. Mostly just a catalog, but there was a special excerpt about Jewel, and I showed it to her.) She said somthing like, "I try to distance myself from that crowd." We kept walking, and it was really weird because there were lots of people, but noone recognized her. I was wearing jeans shorts and a t-shirt (my normal), and she asked me if I was going to wear that to the concert. I said that I was, and she said that she was going to change, and gestured towards her umbros and t-shirt. When we arrived at the venue (the elderly couple's house), I told her that I wanted to sing "Money" with her. We went inside, and the EDA's had been replaced by the members of my cross-country team. Jewel went back and changed clothes (don't remember what she was wearing here), and asked which seat was the best. One of the freshmen told her that it was a seat that wasn't very good, but I told her that it was the seat that the freshman was sitting on. Jewel told him to get up, and started to play. - ---This is where I woke up--- Well, what do you guys think? Am I screwed up? Does my life involve this list just a *little* too much? Pretty strange how a lot of things that are important to me right now ended up in this dream, huh? To start with, how about Rene Descartes, the inventor of geometry. Who's better, him or Jewel? Discuss! :P< Well, let's see. I would have to go with Jewel. Because, while Rene Descartes had a certain naive talent, he really only discovered what would have been discovered someday by someone else anyway. Jewel, on the other hand, creates from nothing what would have gone ignored possibly forever by the ignorant masses. And while Descartes could draw a mean triangle, he never provoked us to think seriously about love and the human mind. Musicians, while having meaning to us personally, do not dictate society. They influence the masses, but they aren't personally responsible for any change in the world. That takes individuals. I think his point was that we shouldn't take so many musicians' word as our personal belief system. He sounds very angry at the youth of today who seem to worship musicians as heroes. He has a point there in that I, too, think that people take musicians too seriously. Unless we plan to be musicians, we really shouldn't worship them as much as we do. He had no right to insult Tori Amos, but his point was valid. And the part about musicians being food was also not so bad. If the world fell apart, musicians would be merely entertainment, as they are now, and couldn't do any more to alleviate the situation than any other person. Anyway, I thought you should all consider that raving people sometimes have a valid point, they just don't make it well. later gators, newt< I don't really agree with this. Here's why: First of all, musicians DO perform an important function. They provide a release, they provide understanding, they provide dreams. Music has always been an integral and powerful part of every society ever born. Why? For the same reason it's called the international language (along with love, I guess!). Everyone can understand it. If the world fell apart today, you can be damn sure there would be a thousand songs written about it tomorrow and the people rebuilding the world would be singing those songs as they worked. They would be doing this because it would make them feel linked and help them to understand and give them hope. It's the same with dreamers. We would never have built a pyramid or a castle or - hell - Disneyland, if it weren't for someone who had the imagination to invent and create what never before had existed. There must be a reason WHY musicians are given so much importance. It's not ignorance. It's the fact that they (sometimes) say what we feel and they bring us together and often make us feel less alone. Mia wrote: >During a really not that fabulous first couple of weeks back at school, Jewel's music is one thing that always is medatative enough to keep me sane and happy, and in touch with simple life facts people all so often forget...like human kindess, and peace. < I think that sums it up pretty well. I never said anything contrary to that statement. I merely said that musicians are entertainers, and, as such, do not themselves inspire. We, the fans of the musicians, are inspired by the music. There is a difference. What Jewel or Tori Amos or anyone else says about the world may be true and valid, but their music is simply a medium for entertainment. People would sing songs about the world falling apart, but the song itself and it's writer are not the important thing. The people are. They rebuild society. Musicians, or so I seem to think, fill the role of writing inspiration for the people. We don't need musicians. We have ourselves. And that may be a point the Rambling Man was taking up: that we rely on musicians to inspire us, that we cannot feel or think without them. And he isn't necessarily wrong. I have as much feeling and emotion as the next person, if not more, but we cannot subsist on emotion alone. Those who think so are only fooling themselves. We need the engineers, the scientists, to keep us running. We need the musicians, the artists, to keep us inspired to run. What was my point? Oh yes: many people who responded to my response were sure to state that artists are a supremely important part of society. I agree and don't recall ever contradicting the statement. I simply said that this Raving Person wasn't so far off from the truth. Humans could and would survive without music. We wouldn't necessarily be happy, but we would survive. I think that makes sense now and I haven't contradicted myself. newt "The wonderful thing about Tiggers is Tiggers are wonderful things Their tops are made out of rubber Their bottoms are made out of springs They're bouncy, trouncy, flouncy, pouncy, Fun, fun, fun, fun, fun About the most wonderful thing about Tiggers is I'm the only one I'M THE ONLY ONE!"- Tigger in "Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day" ------------------------------ From: Gregory Willms Date: Mon, 9 Sep 1996 23:22:48 -0400 (EDT) Subject: Re: NJC: BLASPHEMY!!! you didnt start anything, at least not with me. i was just commenting that i think diversity is good. i dont care what anyone listens to, if it makes you happy, then hell, listen all you like. thats what music is for, if it touches you personally, and you like the music, thats all that matters. - -greg - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ "Let me have music dying, and I seek no more delight." -- John Keats - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ My many e-mail addresses: | | willms@bgnet.bgsu.edu | redphish@hotmail.com | Chromatic@eurythmics.com | Huxxley@aol.com | - ---------------------------- ------------------------------ From: "Cara J.
