Just my 2 > and 1/2 cents! I'm responding to this post for a few reasons. I like Luis's answer. And am I wrong, are you a new face? This whole discussion has brought out a lot of new or formally quit members. I like that. It gives me a chance to hear a lot opinions without having to respond myself. Then why am I writing you ask? Everytime we have a discussion, be it smoking, Jewels appearance, flowers, or NJC vs JC, the same thing happens. Someone writes a letter saying enough or stop or its been settled. Sometimes its done with no malise or times its said as if the person is the spokesman for the rest of the group. Let everybody that has a thought on the subject get it off their chest. You don't have to agree. Yea, you might get tired of seeing a subject continue for so long but others may be having a great time. All the threads finally die a natural death. Let me tell you why I am so sensitive to this issue. When I came to this country as a Five year old, I was given a card to carry with my picture on it. That card has an area marked status. I am identified as a DP. A DP stands for Displaced Person. Something like a man with no country. Even at that age, I started finding out why I had no country. A tyrant named Hitler tried to distroy the world. He changed my world forever. I will always fight for anyones right to be heard. Don't expect me to agree with you all. I will not goose-step in your parade. But you can ask me to march in it and I may. I may even carry your flag and proudly display your banners. But I may not march to the same beat or step in the same pace. I was confused there for a little bit after running through my first batch of e-mail though,I was afraid I accedently got on the Jewel vs. band x and why band x sucks compared to Jewel mailing list, just kidding. I personally think Jewels the best and I guess this is an appropriate place for people to compare their feelings. It just got uninteristing after a time, I mean we all know Jewel is the best and we all wish her the greatest of success. However, something I'm very interisted in are the JewelStock Tapes. You don't have to worry about the others." Now, you see him and he runs up fast, kicks at the air, his friends watch him fall and then laugh. Jewel plays a pretty good guitar, has a tremendous range vocally, and has written HUNDREDS of songs. Alanis can't play an instrument (her harmonica playing is the worst that I have ever heard), has a range of about four notes, and has "co-written" such brilliance as "I've got one hand in my pocket and the other one is playing a piano". Very clever. Jewel got a record deal by busting her ass, writing, and performing for next to nothing. Alanis was the Canadian Tiffany. She has been the invention of a marketing department from day one. Jewel is starting to become more famous now, but will never be the publicity circus that Alanis has become. She will continue to release material for as long as she wants to a smaller audience with taste. Alanis will be music for the mindless masses for a little while longer and then disappear forever as all flashes in the pan eventually do. A few years from now Alanis Morisette will be just another of MTV's Best New Artists to disappear into obscurity. Can you say Alanah Myles? The thing that I liked about this list in the first place is that we helped each other find other artists to listen to. W/O the list, I would have never found Duncan Sheik, Rugburns, Ani Difranco, and the list goes on. Now, it seems because Jewel didn't win a stupid award from the uncoolest, most backwards network on Earth Alanis is shit, and Jewel has been elevated to martyr status- WHERE IS YOUR FUCKING COMMON SENSE???? I said it to a post when I joined the list, and I'll say it again-- if your mother was too stupid or inbred not to tell you this- "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all." It is the same thing that is happening on this list that keeps young artists that are doing something a little different from ever being signed by the record companies, and keeps us from ever hearing them. If someone has a new thing now(which many people do), and Atlantic's only contact to the music world was this list(not likely, thank God) they would think that anyone not doing exactly as Jewel wouldn't garner enough sales to be profitable-case closed. Another deserving young artist loses their shot, and we never get to know them. Celebrate the difference between artists, but don't use them as a crutch for your own artist's defense. Jewel doesn't need your defense- she's doing fine, in case you hadn't noticed. One last thing- I hope that Jewel at least sees this latest thread or hears about it. I hope she'd think it was so stupid to degrade other artists that she wouldn't even consider another JS. It's probably a good thing JS isn't now- the group of new and old members involved in this discussion may have booed Patty Griffin off the stage--yea, that would have been cool, huh? Hoping everyone that needs a life gets one, Patric P.S.- I hope that the old list members don't take this in the wrong context. Anyone that has seen my posts or has had contact with me knows that I'm a humongous Jewel fan, and really try to help people out on the list(free dubs,etc.). I just think we all should take an appreciation pill- there's too much good new music out there to spend our time breaking an artist down. ------------------------------ From: Greg Phillips Date: Sun, 08 Sep 1996 09:42:45 -0400 Subject: Jewel Should Cover Sheryl Crow I think a great song for Jewel to cover would be "No One Said It Would Be Easy" on Sheryl Crow's TUESDAY NIGHT MUSIC CLUB . I don't think it's fair to compare them, basically because their styles are so different. Also, as far as Alanis' music being simple, "I'm Sensitive", "Rocker Girl", and "Race Car Driver" are classic examples of simplistic songs, as well. I don't think talent can be measured by how the simplicity, or lack of it, in a song. They are both great artists, but Alanis won at MTV because she has sold a lot more albums. ------------------------------ From: Jacqueline Fitzpatrick Date: Sun, 8 Sep 1996 17:31:55 +0000 Subject: Jewel at Dem Convention (I know its old news but) FYI I was scanning through AOL when I noticed that George [the magazine] Online had the transcripts of the Live session with Jewel and others at the Democratic Convention. The word artist is used loosly to apply to a lot of terrible musicians. I do agree that discussions about other artists have led me to many new ones. I owe a lot of people a thanks for their suggestions. I have even purchased CD's that I didn't like based on a EDA's comment, but that's OK. On the other hand some negative reviews from some of you has saved me from wasting my time and money. I think what is wrong is to compare artists like sports teams. Bash or rave about an artist, but why make one a winner and another a loser. If you remember the discussion about which Jewel song was the best, we got a variety of answers. Guess what, everyone was right. There is no best song, some are just better than others. > Now, it seems because Jewel didn't win a stupid award from the uncoolest, > most backwards network on Earth Alanis is shit, and Jewel has been elevated > to martyr status- I think we all wish she got more respect. Yea I think a lot of people are making comments out of anger that she lost, but I would like to say, music shouldn't be treated like sports. When I buy my music, it isn't because of an award or if they hit the top 100. > WHERE IS YOUR FUCKING COMMON SENSE???? I said it to a post > when I joined the list, and I'll say it again-- if your mother was too > stupid or inbred not to tell you this- "If you don't have anything nice to > say, don't say anything at all." Someone else take this part and comment. I'm sure Dennis has already written a presciption for what ails Patric. Dr. Harris will probably only prescribe a mild sedative because most everything else about Patric sounds OK. I've seen both artists live muliple times this year, and have enjoyed both artists very much. Neither artist is "perfect" (whatever that means) - Alanis still looks like a dork when she prances around the stage and lots of her fans mindlessly cheer when she "plays" the harmonica. Jewel is an excellent vocalist who is often underappreciated (especially by the Neil Young crowd at Madison Square Garden). Yet I find her songwriting can often be "simplistic" (I plagarize from an earlier post). Fans can only hope both will grow and mature. If I have one technical bone to pick, I still think Alanis's first two CDs should disqualify her from the Best New Artist category in any awards show. But hey, let's not forget that awards shows are excuses for each industry to pat themselves on the back. And I'm sure there will be even more awards presentations in the future...
