What does Jewel owe us as the public for her celebrity status? My answer is nothing. She owes us nothing. We owe her. She sold Atlantic a beautiful album for them to sell us. We bought the album and supported her. Fair trade. We don't know Jewel until we get a change to exist for a year as Jewel. This doesn't happen in reality so none of us can ever understand her COMPLETELY. This is in support of Hiranya's question: "Why judge her at all?" With all this aside using the information I have, I don't think I could find it in my heart to ignore someone who supports me. Maybe I wouldn't have time to offer more then a wave. Maybe I'd just be in a rotten mood an just throw my hand up to acknoledge someone's presence rather then being too cold. Rejection isn't a pleasant feeling and I would go to any means necessary for one less person to feel rejected. On May 16, 1996 after her Irving Plaza concert and her gold album presentation she refused to get into her limosine without signing every autograph for every fan. I wasn't there but this was disscussed at the venue in New Hampshire. Jewel is a tough one to figure so why try? Just love her for what she does do for us and try to remember how greatful she is to live her dream. Just my opinion. She was recording in Nashville then also, doing some finishing touches on her next CD, and we (the list) were told back then she went to the studio AFTER the show you saw...It was late, and she had a show in New Hampshire the next night too. (which I and 38 or so other list members went to). She had been recording all day too. She was probably tired. Like Hiranya said yesterday, she's just human. I've been planning to write this for more than a month, but I didn't get the lyrics for the original song until recently -- even for something as ridiculous as this I wanted to get the meter (well, the syllables anyway) right, in case I ever get bored enough to actually try PLAYING it. Remember that I work as a page at a library, and was doing so during Jewel's performances at the Bearsville Theatre. Enjoy. The lights flicker on, and I look at my cart a little upset, a little distraught, maybe just a little blue maybe it's my salary, maybe it's my worry maybe my credit's too weak there's just this nagging, that I should have got going got too tempting, got too big, got to get out of here but no, I really had to stay home. oh god, what do I do? These aisles stretch out like highways on my country's face that could free me from here But distance is a demon, an accomplice to time As I drive home from work they savor their victory my mind says, "Carter, you had to stick around" but my heart says "You're a lameass monkey" oh god, what do I do? I have been a Metallica fan for about 12 years. I have seen Metallica live over ten times (yes, I saw Met/GnR in Denver!). I am not too fond of the lastest from this extremely hard workin and talented band. It does seem like somewhat mainstream. BUT, Metallica was the ultimate non-main- stream band for a very long time. Selling huge quanities of records with no (then a few very good) videos, and a serious chip on the shoulder for the music industry. They always played exactly what they wanted and never, in 15+ years, given in to a record exec producer. They have not to this day. They havemerely decided (their decision) that it was about time they get theirs. And they are. (btw: per the thread about music related video. Metallica has this bagged.) =) Crunch I know I have bizarre and diverse tastes in music. Wow, Jewel vs. Alanis? I totally agree, let's NOT go there. They're both excellent, very talented and very different in their styles. To argue that one is better or worse than the other is pointless, because neither case can be proven empirically. I'm sure my friends on the Alanis list could argue why Alanis is better as well as any of us could argue why Jewel is better, and we'd all be stuck at an impasse having gained nothing but mutual resentment. So yeah, let's NOT go there. BTW, if I had to state my preference, right now it'd be Jewel, but 4 months ago it'd have been Alanis.
