I didn't read every post since there was 237 of them so please forgive me for neglecting whatever it was many of you had to say. Skiing is a great idea. It is my favorite thing in the world to do. I can't contribute to the Colorado Utah snow debate since I have never skied on either but I know it must be better then this PA snow/ice. Is this just an idea or is someone going to try to make this a reality. I would love to ski with a bunch of EDA's. Letterman. I read a few of the reviews and I must say that she played well and I thought she looked great but I prefer the hometown, innocent, next door neighbor look better. She looked like Carter said, Like a professional. Personally I would have rather seen her come out in a pair of baggy jeans and a sweater with no makeup and her hair in a bun. It would have made it much easier for the feeble minded to concentrate on whats important, the music, rather then her sexy body. I really hope that people are buying her album because they like the music and not because she looked like a supermodel on TV. I am not critisizng her really but stating my preference. Hey, everyone ? Why didn't anyone ever tell me that college means getting up at 7:30 to get to school by 9 to buy books, which puts you 10 minutes late for your 10:00 class, which lets out 10 min. before the next, which lets out 10 minutes before the next, so you don't have time to go get some lunch, and then you've got a class at 2-3:30 which they've conviently changed to 3:30- 5 without telling anyone, so you go to the cafeteria hoping to grab a bite, but the cafeteria closes at 1:30, so you go stand in a line at the bookstore ANOTHER 15 minutes to get change for the vending machines, then find out the vending machines won't take the dollar bills the bookstore gave you, so you sit in a practice room till 3:30, desperately thinking up ways to leave class early so you can get to work at 5, but then the tacher comes and says there's no class 'cause two people didn't show up, which is good, except THEN she says you've gotta stay there 'till 5 anyway to practice but you insist you have to leave because you work 45 minutes away, to which SHE insists you have to practice 3 hours a day, and when you finally leave you get to work just in time to punch in, so still no food, then work 5 hours standing on your feet from 5 to 10, during which they make you go outside and push carriages around for an hour, and you grab a soda ( the only nourishment so far) and FINALLY drive home to get there around 10:20 and sit down to get your email, knowing you've still got to do your homework which you DON'T understand because your music theory class in high school never covered any of this stuff ????? Jewel has undergone a rapid, MAJOR transformation in 1996. Mike said it best when he commented that JewelStock night one (Thursday) was the end of the old Jewel and Friday the beginning of a new Jewel. The innocence is gone, replaced by a much more mature sensuality. I'll miss the old Jewel, but look forward to seeing her evolving persona. (Oh, okay.) Well, no one is being run out of town. That don't fly on this list (kind of a no-fly zone, that one). The attitude many of the EDAs project is a confidence in and caring for each other. It can understandably be mistaken for snobbishness. Believe me, these people will become your close friends if you let 'em. Thanks, Bryan ------------------------------ From: Mike Connell Date: Wed, 04 Sep 1996 00:26:28 -0400 Subject: JewelStock Tapes Tree - Branch volunteers needed - PLEASE READ!! Fellow Everyday Angels, Well, it's time to get this tree a rollin'!! :) :) I know, I know "'bout ****ing time Connell!" (many of you are thinking) This letter is to RECRUIT BRANCHES for the JewelStock tapes! It is NOT, I repeat NOT for taking of leaf orders!! That will happen later AFTER the branches are set up. PLEASE NOTE THAT WE WILL ONLY BE ACCEPTING BRANCHES WHO WERE JEWEL@SMOE.ORG MEMBERS AS OF THE DATE OF JEWELSTOCK: JULY 18, 1996. This is not being discriminatory, this was discussed by myself, Alan B and other tree administrators and we know this is best for this tree. Due to the expected high demand for these tapes (we expect 300 to 400 leaf orders, maybe more), we feel we need around 40 volunteers to branch. We'd like at least TWO volunteers in Canada to handle the "North of the Border" orders. I have already privately EMAILed all Australian EMAIL addresses on the list and will handle that angle seperately. Tapes to Iraqi branches will be hand-delivered in person by Dennis Harris. If you do NOT want to be a branch, and just get tapes later from a branch, you need not read this post. However, I'd like you to read it anyway, especially if you are new to this list or tape trees, as you'll get a good understanding of how and why this stuff works. FIRST: the basic structure for THIS tree (for the benefit of "newbies" and whomever may not understand what's going on here) This tape tree is a co-operative effort among many Everyday Angels of this list. It is to spread the music of Jewel, at no cost, other than to supply your own blank tapes and pay for the postage. It is done in the spirit that, if you can, just maybe you can return the favor someday. If not, so be it. The tree will start with 4 seeds (already chosen), who will each make copies for the branches, who supply their own tapes. The branches are recruited by the tree administrator (me), who then assigns the branches to a seed. Ideally, there will be 40 branches, who make copies for the leaves, who will also supply their own tapes. The leaves write the administrator (WHEN he posts for leaves to write!!), who then assigns the leaves to a branch. Many tapes are then made. Leafs, branches and seeds then all sit back and listen to these wonderful tapes, a special present from Jewel to the Everday Angels @smoe.org. Now, PLEASE READ and understand this ENTIRE post BEFORE replying or making your decision on whether or not to volunteer to be branch for treeing of the JewelStock tapes. If you don't follow the instructions put forth later, you might not be a branch. The tapes will be offered in TWO stages: STAGE ONE: Fall 1996 THREE 90 minute audio cassette tapes. The tapes will include all of the musical events of JewelStock with the EXCEPTION of Patty Griffin's set and the Jewel performances that included the band. The tape set will also include the 30 minute set Jewel performed live on WDST radio in Woodstock on July 16th, plus her performance on the Rosie O'Donnell show the day before JewelStock. (The set list has been posted by Alan Bershaw twice and will be posted again soon by me) STAGE TWO: timed with the release of Jewel's next CD. (early 1997) One audio cassette with the band performances from both concerts which were excluded from Stage One. (there may be some extras on tape #4) =20 The first four seeds of the tree will be Dan Stark, Richard (Akira) Chang, Alan Bershaw and myself. We will each make 10 to 12 SETS of tapes. (30 to 36 tapes!) These sets will go out to the branches of the tree who MUST agree to do the same, make 10 to 12 sets each. Please realize that you will be making/dubbing THIRTY to THIRTY-SIX tapes. (of course, fewer leaf requests means fewer Tape Sets to dub...time will tell) We are now recruiting FORTY (or more) of those branches. I repeat... PLEASE NOTE THAT WE WILL ONLY BE ACCEPTING BRANCHES WHO WERE JEWEL@SMOE.ORG MEMBERS AS OF THE DATE OF JEWELSTOCK: JULY 18, 1996. Stage Two branches will be recruited later in December or January. Of course I'd like the original branches to do Stage Two, but I will not worry about that until Stage One is completed. ***In addition to what was mentioned above, branches MUST agree to do or have the following: (in NO order of priority) 1) Possess at least one decent quality DUAL recorder capable of NORMAL SPEED dubbing, OR two decent quality single cassette decks. (Do NOT use BOOM BOXES!!!! We want our branches to have quality equipment) =20 2) Agree to make YOUR masters AT LEAST a High Grade/ High Bias audio cassette. I am officially asking all branches to STANDARDIZE for this tree to use Maxell XLII-S OR a metal tape of your choice. Of course, you don't have to, but doing so will make this tree a smoother operation and will also make the quality at all levels the best all could realistically hope for. 3) Agree to dub in REALTIME/NORMAL SPEED. This means FOUR AND ONE-HALF HOURS of recording time PER SET dubbed for Stage One. 4) Agree to dub sets soon after arrival from a leaf.....Ideally at least 2 sets per week, 3 if possible. (Dependant, of course, upon tape arrival from leaves) I realize this may take some time to dub 10 to 12 sets. If you knock off 2 or 3 sets per week, you'll be done in 30 to 45 days maximum. Considering the same for the 1st seed of the tree (Dan, Rich, Alan and myself) the whole process (seeds to branches to leaves) should 2 to 3 months to complete the tree for Stage One. (snag= s may stretch it further) NOTE - there are OTHER rules and stipulations for branches that are "normal" for these sort of things. I will not spell them out now, but will EMAIL them privately to accepted branches. ************************* NOTE!!! Get this part right when you respond!!! So, if you are willing to be a branch EMAIL me. In the SUBJECT of the EMAIL...PLEASE put "BRANCH-JS TAPES" and sent it to me. I am serious about this, if you don't put the right subject, you won't be a branch until you get it right. If you ever took on the responsibility of a task such as this, or organizing JewelStock, or taking RSVPs for JewelStock (as Akira did), you'd understand. It will make things MUCH easier at my end if ALL of the subjects are identical, it is MUCH EASIER to sort and deal with this, and the tree will be rolling that much faster. Follow all instructions to the letter and all will run smoothly. :) I look forward to working with the volunteers. Now, all who wish to volunteer, please cross this line. __________________________________________________________ REMEMBER... PUT BRANCH-JS TAPES in the subject of your EMAIL to me!
