When I first saw Jewel in January, I noticed her passion and emotion when she performed. I was pulled along on her rollercoaster of rage and sadness. Check out the digests from around January 30th-february 3rd for my descriptions. Anyways, I saw her perform on VH1 Duets, and crossroads later, Foolish Games both times, and saw her emote a lot more. Around this time I started to wonder whether it was an act or whether she was truly emotionally pouring it out. After a couple more concerts, I've come to a 90% sure stance that she is performing. Not just the songs, but the whole thing. That's what performers do. I think that it would be too draining for a performer to actually vest so much of themselves into their songs each and every night in front of an audience of strangers (and look, she's been touring for more than a year). So they have to act out to make the performance interesting and draw the audience closer; some of the emotion might be real, but just enough to feed off of and create the illusion of the whole emotional outpouring. I've seen a performer (let's call her Susan Werner, because that's her name) who performs two beautiful songs on the piano at her concerts that are kinda jazzy/loungey but slow. She performs the two together: the first is called "maybe if i sang cole porter" and is about how she would do anything (like watch football or chew tobacco) to let the man know that she loves him and try to win him over. She follows up by saying "imagine that it's a couple months later" and goes into the next song called "Much at All" the chorus of which is "I guess that I don't miss you much at all." People laugh when they hear the first part of the song because of the juxtaposition of songs and lyrics, but then they sober up when they realize how sad and lonely the song is. My point is, Susan seems to put so much of her sorrow into the song and when she ends, she just sits at the piano while people clap and even after they have stopped, just sitting there not acknowledging anyone, sometimes just letting her fingers rest on the last keys she played, or just putting them in her lap. I've seen her do this a couple times and felt my heart go out to her because she looks so lost and sad, and I can't tell whether she is just milking it or really feeling that way. THat had very little point. Oh, no it did. Performers and such. So, maybe Jewel is just putting us on and toying with our emotions. You know how she seems to have evolved or devolved from a sweet country girl into a trucker honey, who is she? I had some more inflammatory remarks, but I can't remember them. ANd always take what I say with a muon of salt. I don't disagree completely with what was said (the message stated that Jewel seems to be acting emotional sometimes, and not really emotional). Many performers do, indeed, act out emotions. But I don't think it's all an act. It seems to me that Jewel really does involve her emotions in a song when it's performed for the first couple of times, which may explain why she has so much music out there but only one album. I think she realizes that she can't get emotional about a song when she's sung it 5 or 6 hundred times, so she does have to put some showmanship into it. But as far as stringing us along, well, I very much disagree with that. I don't think she intends to manipulate our emotions through the songs, but mearly wishes, through acting out emotions, to make it easier for us to feel what she first felt when writing the song. Does that make sense? I know it's easier for me to feel emotional about a song or story when the singer/narrator/main character is emotional about it. I think that's what seperates an artist from a mere performer: a mere performer doesn't feel the emotions they perform. An artist does. Which is, incidentally, why I dislike many depressing alternative bands out there: they are simply playing to the crowd and trying to look like they're not. But that's just me ranting, which I have a habit of doing. in a while, crocodiles newt "The wonderful thing about Tiggers is Tiggers are wonderful things Their tops are made out of rubber Their bottoms are made out of springs They're bouncy, trouncy, flouncy, pouncy, Fun, fun, fun, fun, fun About the most wonderful thing about Tiggers is I'm the only one I'M THE ONLY ONE!"- Tigger in "Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day" ------------------------------ From: Mike Connell Date: Tue, 03 Sep 1996 18:14:44 -0400 Subject: MTV Awards - Jewel is gonna surprise and win one!!!! Fellow EDAs, My personal take/predictions in the categories that our beloved Lady Jewel has been nominated are: 1) Best New Artist in a Video - Alanis has it wrapped up...what did she have? Wasn't it five top five videos off her debut album? Kinda tough to beat that if you ask me. I know it's just one video that gets nominated ("Ironic" in this case) but the voting will be swayed by all the other videos she had. Guess that just means we gotta get MTV to sponsor the Coffee House Awards next season. 2) Best Female Video - Well, anyone can shoot a video in a car and wear four sweaters and a knit cap. Not exactly a "deep" vid here. If Alanis wins this one it's a joke. Tracy's Chapmans' vid falls in the same category here if you ask me. Both are really just the songs, no substance to the video. I ain't seen the one by Bjork so I can't comment.....so I say Jewel WINS for WWSYS and we ALL celebrate by posting 500 total EMAILs to the list tomorrow night overheating Smoe and driving Jeff nutz. And TV Guide (who gang-jeered Jewel and six others for water closet videos) will hafta sit back and realize America LOVES videos shot in the can. But I'm not interested in a head count to see who has more people on there side. You use the words, "Nobody wants to censor you", but thats exactly what you are doing. Who are you to say where the appropriate place is. Its like someone telling me where to make love. Most of the time its in a bed, but sometimes the right moment comes on a beach, or a dirt floor. The fact is that we do have many people on different sides of this issue. When I just wrote, "Who are you...", that almost sounds like I'm trying to censor you. I don't mean to, but if you get that impression, wouldn't that anger you. You have every right to let us hear your thoughts. Matter of fact, you and others that have said some of the same things have had an effect on the list. I now am in favor of the News List as it has been proposed. It is a very fair compromise. My only thoughts are that those people will miss a lot. > A lot of people are going to get immediately defensive because they > think people are trying to shut them up. Please don't; they're not. I have to say it again. You make it sound like you are the spokesperson for others on this issue. I am reading this letter as your opinion and not a rule of this list. > I wonder how many potential subscribers this list has lost because of > its utter irrelevance to its purported topic. Just like you, I came looking to find out as much as I could about Jewel. I was first almost frightened away by the amount of mail. But then I realized how special of a discovery I made. It almost felt like when you go to a small club to hear a unknown artist for the first time and thrilled by discovering greatness. It takes special people to make up a special list. We are going to lose some but we also are going to discover a lot of new EDA's. > And aren't any of you stopping to > notice how Hiranya's messages *to you* have been decreasing because she > simply can't sort through all her mail to find messages that Lenedra > might want to comment on? Is that worth throwing away so that you can > talk about toothpaste HERE? BTW, what brand toothpaste does Jewel use on that wiggly tooth? Hiranya's messages may have also decreased because she is a lot busier. I see no problem getting a message to her. mailto:hiranya@aol.com I spent a good part of my life in the music industry. Artists are very often afraid of the "fan-atic". When Hiranya reads the mail, I hope she sees that we are a well balanced group. We are not a group of fanatics and only talk about Jewel. > When I first joined this list it was almost all jewel content, yet it > did not lack any sense of community at all -- these were the people who > brought you Rare Angels. The main difference was not that people never "helped" > anyone -- but they did it in private email. When I joined the list, it had a nice balance, just as it does now. You could easily see the community spirit that Hiranya must have first saw and reported back to Jewel and Lenendra. What the list showed by this is what made Jewel comfortable to give us the gift of JewelStock. You have no way of knowing if there is a lot of private mail, that's just a guess. But in my case, I send more private e-mail than posts to the list. Even when it is an issue between two parties, it is sometimes best heard by the entire court of EDA's. > I have come out against a news-only list before and I'm not ready to > change that position. In a moderated list that opinion would be left in the hands of one person and not all of us. If you need to be governed, lead and censored, that's OK. But don't try to tell me what, when or how to say it. The rest of the list will judge me anyway.
