I was trying to clean up my act but here I go again with another stupid story. One day in my record store, a little 14 year old girl comes up to me and said. "Mr Igor(the little ones always called me that)what's your favorite album"? It was long ago and I showed her a Bruce album. She looked at the back of the album and kept on looking up at me and shaking her head in disapproval. Finally she said, "Mr Igor, you are a bad man and you like a disgusting album ". She handed it back to me and said, "Here is how I can tell. Pick a song title, any one you like". Ok, so I picked Jersey Girl. She again says, "you're disgusting pick another one". So I figured I would play along so this time I picked "You Can Look(But You Better Not Touch)" That one made her real mad, "One more chance", she yells. OK, how about "Thunder Road" what can be bad about that. "Thats it, you lose, 3 strikes and you're out", she says. "Here is how I can tell if a song is going to be disgusting. I read the name of the song and then add the words UNDER THE SHEETS to the end of the title. Your a bad man Mr Igor". You should have seen her storm out after looking at the Gospel Dept. Okay, as a former college radio assistant chief, how the heck do you keep your heads from gumming up when you use that many Metal tapes? Clean every 2-3 tapes played? Always seemed like dirty heads caused nearly as many sound problems as tape quality did. I ended up developing the habit of recording "masters" onto Metal, then making a "dub-master" using better type II stuff like XL-IIS or TDK SA-X, and making copies off that... adding a generation, but giving what seemed like more consistent tape to tape performance. 99% isopropyl is cheap enough, but good cleaning swabs add up if you're using a couple a day during heavy use. (not that much anymore, to me, admittedly) Of course, the other nice way to do things is to get a DAT, and use data grade tapes, mostly because they seem to have better transport mechanisms and cases, but also because I've been told that they're tested to higher standards(actually, I was told that data tapes are tested, and the ones that fail become audio 4mm). I'm saving up for that. ( I know, 4mm has a lot of screwy things about the format, but the mic'ing at a live event isn't THAT great, so it's still the best copying format, I think, even using analog signalling for those too poor and lazy to get away from consumer SCMS or modifying their decks) > Maxell XLII-S generally easy to find, priced good (I suppose that XLII > will do for a leaf, but I'd go with the XLII-S) > > Maxell MX-S a metal tape. Maxell's "high end"/best. They ain't cheap, > but they ARE worth it. Usually in pack of two, mine cost me five dollars > each, but Linus Gelber got his for $4 each in NYC. However, considering The other brand I like is TDK. At least before, I'd say that Maxell had better TAPE, while TDK had better tape CASINGS(shell/mech). I found TDKs to be more reliable, basically. Not really able to say how much difference there is between an XL-IIS and a SA-X, or the MX-S and the MA-XG, since I spent most of my time with pro units, which don't always have the highest sound quality (there are other factors that also matter in radio, and our budgets weren't real high, either)... Any audiophiles have opinions on Maxell compared to TDK? Of course, to give an idea of how far my principles have sunk, I actually use a DUBBING deck now. :P Well, it's a decent dubbing deck (Sony wr565) with 2 motor transports, but lacking HX-Pro NR(B or C only). Just out of curiosity, if any branches have read down this far, what kind of equipment is everyone else using when they dub? The Clinton administration has taken over traditionally Republican issues like crime, welfare and even family values. However, according to our Choose Or Lose poll, Republicans still have an edge over Democrats on values -- perhaps because the character issue is such a big problem for Clinton. We dispatched our guest reporter Jewel to find out what Democrats here have to say about values -- family and otherwise. JEWEL: Hi, this is Jewel. I'm here with MTV and we're going to see what Democrats think about values. (To Robert Reich) What values do you want to show the youth of America? ROBERT REICH, Secretary, U.S. Department of Labor: Several values. One value is tolerance, inclusion of all people. You know, if you look around this convention, you see people of every race, every creed, every background, the disabled... The Democrats really stand for the proposition that everybody should be able to get ahead in this society. JEWEL: What are the values of South Carolina that you want to represent? AMIE, 19, South Carolina Delegate: Well, the values from South Carolina, I guess, especially young values, are the values of education and the environment. And those are the two most important issues that the young delegation from South Carolina has. TONY, 22, Colorado Delegate: Too many people associate family values with the Republicans, based on 'mother-father-children'. Whereas we are more, just, 'whatever is best for the children'. JEWEL: (To delegate in a Chicago Bulls basketball shirt) So, are you more of a Rodman fan or a Democrat? KRISTOPHER, 22, Washington Delegate: (Raising his shirt to reveal a Seattle Sonics shirt underneath.) Well, I'm more of a Democrat, and also a Sonics fan. I just didn't wear this outright because I didn't want to get my butt kicked in the United Center. (The Macarena starts blaring over the United Center's sound system.) JEWEL: They told me I should beef up on dances and I went to this country-western line dancing thing... and it's not this. God. (To delegate) Why are so many adults in suits doing the Macarena at the Democratic convention? DELEGATE: I guess all these Democrats want to have a good time. It seems to be the theme song of the convention. JEWEL: We are the hope of the future, but who do you think the hope of the present is? LANE, 19, South Carolina Delegate: Well, Bill Clinton, obviously. He's fought hard for young people in the four years that he's been President. He has saved school loans, he has increased the minimum wage. There are millions and millions of young people who work minimum wage jobs and this wage increase effects young people the most. JEWEL: (Standing amidst the California delegation on the crowded convention floor.) We're in California, working my way slowly but surely all the way over to Alaska. It's by Guam. Very strange, the geography here. So as soon as we get there we'll see what my fellow Alaskans think about family values. (She begins to swim through the crowd.) Well, I made it. I'm in Alaska, and I'm going to see what my state has to say about values. (To delegate) What do you think the values of Alaska are, and do you think that the Democrats represent those values for you? ALASKA DELEGATE: Freedom, democracy. And, sure, the Democratic party represents that. JEWEL: Here we are in the hall, where people are buying hot dogs and pretzels and eating well. You can tell that the politicians are some of the most well-fed, healthy people out there. Fashion also seems to be... (she stops short) Dredlocks! (She approaches a man sporting a business suit and dreds.) Nice to see a fellow Rasta! Dreds at a political convention! MAN WITH DREDS: Diversity and inclusion. It's what the Democrats are all about, right? (Aretha Franklin launches into "The Star Spangled Banner" from the main podium.) JEWEL: Oh my God. Aretha Franklin. I'm such a fan. The queen. One day, when I grow up, maybe I'll be half as good as Aretha. (To delegate) What are family values? I hear people speaking in very general terms, but not specifically. They say we're supposed to teach our kids. We're supposed to educate them. But what are we supposed to educate them about? KATRINA, 22, Colorado Delegate: Well, you educate them first about reading, writing and arithmetic. And with that, you also have to have moral values. That's what sustains us and carries us through life. JEWEL: OK. We've been wandering around the floor, checking out family values and what exactly values are for the Democrats. It's something that they're obviously working very hard on. So hopefully they'll keep doin' it. Check you later. ------------------------------ From: James McGarry Date: Fri, 30 Aug 1996 08:24:30 -0400 (EDT) Subject: Re: NJC: Barrie Saturday? But what I see in that is this: it [being censorship] starts somewhere. Its does not start off with the higher-ups pulling those books etc. It starts with the people.. when the people begin to censor each other, the higher-ups (of any society past and present) see this as the opportunity and an advantage.. and then it begins. I am opposed to any type of moderation, or censorship like that.. I can see where the owner of the list would want to moderate it.. one to keep the people happy with the ease or reading, and two to dis-connect himself with any words spewed forth by an anger or mal-intended person. But the latter of the two should not be a worry.. the owner is not "God", and I'm not saying he/she thinks that, the owner is merely the keeper of a place where people have fun, and learn. Thats an honor more than a burden.. and so they should take care of this place like that. but thats my opinion. :) Anthony Prescott Pego Little Cub Pego Pi - Pego Imaging & Web Design [ O W N E R ] HTTP://WWW.TELEPATH.COM/PMG ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V1 #522 ***************************
