Specifically, the understanding that by making a statement, either emotionally, physically, spiritually, etc. you have created a reality for yourself to exist within (kinda like positive visualization that those motovational counselors taught to the yuppies in the 80's) Very Field of Dreams-ish - If you think it, it will come. - -Jeffrey, approaching the edge of credibility- - -- - -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- jeffm@genghis.com http://luna.genghis.com/jeff/index.htm - -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- ------------------------------ From: toni@indy.net (Toni Dunn) Date: Wed, 28 Aug 1996 08:10:54 -0500 Subject: Rugburns JC After listening to all of the rugburns cd I am a die hard fan and spend my time drooling over steve and his plaid pants! He does make a lot of Jewel references. Like, "Now's not the right time for love, cause I'm busy building an igloo in alaska" And he says stuff about a girl with a voice like an angel and makes quite a few references to hot dogs. In one other song he says, "It's pink and fleshy, I'll never get to touch it, cause I'm so dirty" or something like that. If you listen to the cd very carefully you can hear all of these and more. Life was better because he was part of it. Rainy days had rainbows and the coldness of winter was replaced by the warmth of his touch. Now that we are apart, life is different. It rains a little more now and it's colder than I remember, but I'm beginning to see the sun's rays breaking through the clouds and feel the warmth of spring slowly arriving. I am not sure if I think about the same things as other people. Gillian-- (I cut and pasted this so I'll identify who wrote what as I go). Maybe you think about the same things but in a different and original way. It comes back to how we always bring our experience to our perceptions. When I was younger, I think I confused lack of understanding with lack of agreement. Just that simple distinction has helped me admire the differences in the way some of us look at the world. Still, although ultimately we are alone in our thoughts, it does not prevent our being touched by other's words and music (sorry for stating the obvious). This happens when we hear or read something that speaks to some part of our experience. Rich--I have this problem. By being brought up in certain situations, my first instinctual reaction or thought is sometimes what I know is wrong. I can then correct that but can't stop it from being my instinct. I don't see it as an emotional response but more of a trained one. Next follows the emotional reaction which is correct and just. Rational thought then acts to control the emotion so as not to hurt me or anyone else. (Snip) Gillian--I *think* I disagree. Not about the sequence of these events, but about why they occur. An instinct is one that is hard-wired in all of us--not learned. Fight or flight is a good example of a universal human instinct (and although you did use that as an example, I think you were speaking more generally here). The urge to do something socially or morally wrong, let's say something as relatively benign as keeping too much change given to you by a store clerk, is not an instinct, but a learned response. In other words, our individual responses to the same situation will vary according to how we have learned to view (perceive) the world. My real argument here is that by the time we have thoughts--rational or otherwise--the emotional response has already occurred and depending on our experience, may or may not be "correct and just." Maybe we are saying the same thing and are just running into a difference in semantics. I look forward to your take on this. Rich--(snip) I think what Jewel was saying is that reality is relative. We make our own realities. (snip) I remembered something yesterday and then thought, was that a dream I had. I am still not sure so it might as well be reality. My reality anyway. Reality is not real at all but also a perception controlled by the mind doing the perceiving. Please tell me I'm not a weirdo. Gillian--Well, I can't say for sure if you're a weirdo or not but regardless, you have lots of company in getting confused about dreaming and being awake. Vivid dreams do that to me--sometimes very scary ones, and sometimes those that are really emotional and/or sexy. In the latter case, no doubt it's wishful thinking :-). Cheers!
