My comments (which you just know were unavoidable) are in the [brackets]. I messed around with the formatting to make the dialogue easier to read. Online chats are by their nature a haphazard experience, so some of Miss Kilcher's responses were interspersed amongst later questions and previous answers. I've used my judgment in reconstituting her thoughts into individual statements. Others present for the chat may disagree with the result, but I think this makes fairly good sense. Now, read on! ONLINE HOST "We are now here LIVE from the Art Institute of Chicago with Jewel!!!! To send your question to the speaker, click on the Interact icon, then use the Ask a Question option." QUESTION "Jewel, you signed your autog. for me outside your hotel in Prov. RI after your last night on the Dylan tour.....did his songs have social/political impact on you?" JEWEL "Yes. Of course they did, he speaks to everyone. I think music is in general. Music is good because it lets you experience" QUESTION "when is your next album going to be released" JEWEL "January or February." QUESTION "Would you like to let slip any secrets about your new album?" [This was my first question. I also asked what the song composition would be like, i.e. would it be all new material (with "new" I'm including songs like "Absence of Fear" and "Carnivore" which we are already familiar with) or would she include favorites like "Jessica" or -- crossed fingers in my case -- "Pale Shade of Grey." The host truncated this part out.] JEWEL "You can help me think of a title..." [Well, I did that several weeks ago. I guess "Pieces of You 2: Electric Boogaloo" and "Yodelay!" didn't pass muster. :( ;p ] QUESTION "Jewel how does it feel to have people like me look up to you??? JEWELFAN22 aka MEFAN22 JS '96!" JEWEL "It feels kind of strange to have people look up to me. Buyt its a responsibility I enjoy because I speak from my heart... which speaks to other people's hearts which is all that really matters." QUESTION "Jewel, those of us on the Everyday Angels mailing list were wondering... what is your definition of beauty ? Thank you !" [Good shot Rachel.] JEWEL "Beauty is anything that rekindles the spirit." QUESTION "Jewel, Are your politics right or left or are you just interested in the process?" JEWEL "I think both parties are talking about children being the hope of the future, but I want to know, who is the hope of today??? I want political leaders to stop being petty and show us an example of how to problem solve." QUESTION "When did you learn to play the guitar?" JEWEL "When I was almost 18." QUESTION "what do you think about Hillary Clinton's speech?" JEWEL "I had to leave to go to my Rock the Vote gig and missed it. Sorry." QUESTION "now with your popularity growing do you still find time to surf" JEWEL "Of course. Though I'm not in San Diego as much." QUESTION "would you rather be a star or a fish? Crash Boy" [How the hell did THIS one get through? ;) ] JEWEL "Star or fish? A star" QUESTION "Were you self-taught on guitar, or did you have a teacher?" JEWEL "Yes, I am self-taught." [Ah! There is hope for me yet! Whenever anyone asks me how I'm doing with the guitar, I reply: "Well, I suck less ..."] QUESTION "What is it you do as a Rock the Vote 'campaigner?'" [This was my second question, an acknowledged "celebrity kiss-ass" query that lets the answerer talk about what she is doing and how it matters to her. Still, it got a thoughtful response from Miss Kilcher, so I'm not TOTALLY humiliated.] JEWEL "I'm trying to educate the youth and make them more aware of what the issues are and how the voice can be heard and that can make a change." *************** Then she was whisked away for a night 'o hobnobbing. Before and after I got to chat with a bunch of EDAs, including my Evil Cousin Thrice Removed, Dennis Harris. I REALLY hope nobody logged the post-Jewel chat, because I further proved my ability to drag any conversation into the gutter. Subjects included disease, humorous titles of pornographic films, prostitution, questionable Olympic events, and a "Clockwork Orange" riff between me and Dennis. Rachel hid under the table for most of it, gobbling away her tasty treats. Oh, and if it isn't obvious already, I've temporarily joined America Online. After tonight I have seven free hours, after which use I shall rapidly dismember myself (I'll be selling tickets for that by the way; bring your own cutting instruments). I had plenty of fun as an AOL member last year, but I'm quite happy with my far less charismatic (but far more economical) ISP right now. Once I'm gone, the EveryDay Angels chats shall be thankfully free of references to "A Clean and Pleasant Stranger." So, now that you know what I like, do you think I'll >like any of the above artists? Poe, Heather Nova and Patti Rothberg's CDs are all great in their entirety IMO. Out of the bunch, Fiona Apple does the least for me, and I haven't heard Tracey Bonham's entire CD. Patty Griffin opened for Jewel in Woodstock and I think her CD "Living With Ghosts" is brilliant. You might also like Ani Difranco, Juliana Hatfield, Kate Bush, Weeping Tile. Jewel's mailing list was started by those from the "Ecto" list, which is centered around an indie artist named Happy Rhodes. Happy's music can be an acquired taste, but those who like her, love her. Fell in love with in both movies, in this one she is more of a sex symbol, but she does provide alot of the internal conflict in the main character. I've read the book a couple times before and seen the last movie version but this one made me see so much more symbolism in the film. It is an excelent update of the film the only main difference in this one and the book is that instead of vivisection it is genetic manipulation.
