Scary. - - at breakfast at Friendly's, everyone had eggs and pancakes, too. had our maple syrup, everything but you. we broke the yolks and made a smiley face. we kinda liked it in our brand new place... - - on the way home from NH, Selena fell asleep at the wheel and crashed the party van into a guard rail on the New York Thruway if anyone has anything to add to this list, go right ahead. My understanding is that part of her complaint about politics is that musicians and other celebs are influential, when they have nothing to do with the matter. She doesn't like that people are voting, not because of their beliefs, but based on the politics of a celeb endorsing that vote. I think people aren't involved enough in politics, but Rock the Vote is getting them active without involving them. It's not enough to vote. Democracy is supposedly about the people taking responsibility for their own country. While RtV pays lip service to that, the simple truth is that it's far more about that now forbidden term, Political Correctness, than it is about anything else. "Vote because cool people say to." Ehh? If Jewel wants other people to get involved, she can do it on her own terms, not the terms of THOSE people, the ones that wouldn't accept her until a million other people had. Yes, I think she should refuse to do a RtV event. I have nothing against her getting some publicity and selling more records, but I do have a problem with having to subscribe to the thought that says people should think, but think only in approved groups. It it one of my favorite songs and that is one of the most debatable lines in it. I think the key to interpreting this line is to remember that night is introduced as a character in the song in the very first line. "Night with its shattered teeth attempts to speak, my pen is present but my courage left, via the sink." Night is attempting to speak through her but she is intimidated by its darkness. The next time we see night in the song is in, "Flame licks the air with its silver tongue, night was many hands but I have just one." This introduces night's counterpart and foil character in this story, fire. The flame later becomes the flame on top of the match that wasn't big enough to light his heart on fire. So I see the hands imagery as being her hand holding the match and the fire(one hand) and it causing shadows, like the ones that dance across the wall with long fingers, see, fingers and hands; shadows of many hands, dark silhouttes. She feels as if she is being groped by night's many dark hands as she attempts to tell the rest of the story. She is both the light(never could win the guy over with the too-small flame and the Camomille tea) and the darkness(worries about her swerve tempting him to sway and being beautiful enough to evoke apologies from Romeo) and throughout the song it goes back in forth, which one is she. Is she the deep lines like "I'm sorry if my heart breaking ruined your day." or the cute ones like "Goldilocks knew three bears they all ate oatmeal and tiptoes upstairs."??? She answers her own duality question by saying, after each verse, "Oh well, sometimes it be that way." Just my interpretation, but I write too, and I think it's a pretty good one.
