Jeff, Funny you should mention this. I've been trying to get real audio to work. Here's what happens: I was under the impression that Real Audio would just blend right in with the web page and it would start up on its own. What happens is that it downloads it and then I have to go to my finder or through helper applications in Netscape and upload it. Sometimes this works and other times it turns out the audio was save as text where it saved as a bunch of strange symbols on simple text. I was able to upload yours but it did fade in and out as I listened to it(28.8 modem). Any suggestions or is that the extent of it? Such negative thoughts can really be detrimental to the entire planet. Is this how you think all the time? Your 'personal mental gallery' is a scary thought in and of itself. > A person just after they blew smoke in my face, laying on the ground > with a bruised and swollen face with me shoving his cigarettes into his > mouth and making him eat them. What is this about? Are you a violent angel? Such aggressive behavior and thoughts could not possibly be healthy. They most likely cause more harm than good. Things affect people differently. There is no way to generalize symptoms or effects. Just like the RDA (recommended daily allowance) for vitamins. The RDA is calculated for an imaginary 154lb male. It doesn't take into account things such as diet, stress, tap water, habits, and YOUR MENTAL ATTITUDE. Meaning....it is something inaccurate and outdated. Taking a one-a-day is no better than placebo. It kind of IS placebo. Look....I thought there was a request by many others to stop this stupid discussion on smoking and other mundane topics. I agree. Let's drop it. Political topics, which include smoking nowadays, go nowhere. It is a waste of time. And a waste of everyone else's time on this thread that really don't care. We are all HUNMAN BEINGS. Let's not divide the people into any more categories than have already been burned into our brains. Labels do nothing but isolate. One last thing. I posted the information about American Spirit, because the fact is people smoke. And if they are going to smoke, why not have them smoke something that is less harmful to themselves? Don't you think that MAYBE it is the 300 chemicals ADDED to the tobacco that causes the most damage? Carbon monoxide is NOT a byproduct of burning tobacco. Maybe you can't see that angle. Maybe you don't care about anyone but yourself. Especially smokers. That is your right to think that way. But it is a lonely way to think. And wanting to hurt others is just plain ol' MEAN. How about some compassion? Is that such a foreign concept? Haze For those that care, there is a really good book out there that I recommend that everyone reads. About 6 months or so ago, I was bored at work, and had a copy of this rag called The East Coast Rocker. It is a free publication with articles and listings of bands and stuff in the NJ/NY area. On the cover was this chick named Jewel. I had never heard of her, or heard her music. I ended up reading the interview about her, and when I was finished, the thing that stuck in my mind was that she actually had a clue. She was INTELLIGENT. Which is something you don't find every day among most all of the people in the entertainment industry. Alot of the time, the people on TV/Movies/Radio etc... are total empty-heads. (100% of newscasters..hehehe) But the interview intrigued me. Jewel mentioned a book that she had read called INFINATE MIND The Science of Human Vibrations by Valerie Hunt. The way she talked about this book, convinced me to buy it. It is not to be found 'in stock' at most any bookstore. You have to order it. So I did. And the book is VERY interesting. It blew me away. I can STRONGLY recommend that book as MUST READ! I am sure that Jewel would say the same thing. If you are unaware of how much power there is in mear THOUGHTS, you would do yourself good to read it. INFINATE MIND The Science of Human Vibrations by Valerie Hunt. Anyways, it was only after reading that book, that I bought Jewel's CD. The book convinced me that she was a person worth checking out. I was attracted to her mind before I ever heard any of her music. It was refreshing to read that she was into 'scientific books', as she called them, rather than the junk romance novels one could assume that she would read. Her intellect is such a turn on! So, for anyone who cares, that is how I discovered Jewel. I only wish I would have known about her before she got so popular. The days of her intimate setting performances look to be over. At least the majority of her performances. And that seems to be where she 'sparkles'. ------------------------------ From: xenomorph@sprynet.com Date: Thu, 22 Aug 1996 06:57:15 -0700 Subject: POJ Copyright update Thank you everyone who has offered input and advice in this matter thus far. Keep it coming if you have thoughts. I was just about to post the emails but they are at home and I don't have them with me right now. However, I want to update you on the current story. I have suspended the link to POY lyrics only from my main lyrics page. They are still buried in the alphabetical files that I set up last week. I'm thinking of burying them all for a bit and putting them back later after the storm. Then I'd just worry about it all coming back to me down the road. I'm not going to jail though. I'd abandon it all before I went that far... I'd live in my truck, eating carrots and peanut butter, steal toilet paper from Denny's and offend little old blue haired ladies (and there are plenty of opportunities here in Florida).... :) I believe that Atlantic is bluffing or it's a joke. I think my benefits to them far outweigh any harm from me. Compare my site to theirs and see which offers more info to inspire a Jewel fan. I have been thinking about making the site a bit more official. Like getting rid of that stupid, ridiculously long, hard to recall URL I have. Maybe I could register something simple, easy to find and remember, related to Jewel. The big question is: Does anyone have a provider/server they can recommend? It needs to be reliable, fast, good access for updating 24 hrs a day and preferably a local phone number in Florida. Although I could have my private email/browse account elsewhere so that's not too big of deal. The big concern will be SPRYNET, now owned by Compuserve. Big company and they can pretty much do what they want in providing me access or not. I can't stop them from suspending my pages. I wrote them a letter late last night explaining the whole situation. My response if they do that, of course will be a boycott of them. My current position of employment is one that which determines which Internet Business Services are setup and used by my company. This company is one that undoubtedly has helped put a product in your hands or near you. From every beer and liquor company, to Coke & Pepsi & Evian, to Kodak film, personal hygeine products and any kind of food you feed your dog or cat. The list becomes endless since we have consumed our three major competitors in recent months. They may never know it but I can easily steer many a dollar away from any company remotely connected to SPRY/Compuserve. I'm really just venting a frustration right now. Excuse my ranting about things that I probably shouldn't dive into right now. Oh, and let me know as soon as you can't access the site or if there are problems. I'll keep everyone up to date in our little battle against censorship and the fight to promote Jewel! Adam Pieces of Jewel http://home.sprynet.com/sprynet/xenomorph/jewelmn.htm ------------------------------ From: Linus Gelber Date: Thu, 22 Aug 1996 10:01:57 -0400 (EDT) Subject: Atlantic Records/Lyric Sites Hi EDA's - Try not to get too hysterical on the lyrics issue--Atlantic is one of the worst offenders in the increasing wave of labels trying to shut down Internet information sites, but a cease-and-desist letter is a routine first step and is rarely followed by prosecution. However, they will in all likelihood want you to take the lyrics site down. If they make any moves to "block" your site, however, through anything other than open negotiations with your ISP, you should immediately contact their legal department and tell them to lay off at once. Atlantic has recently shut down several large tablature sites, despite the interesting argument that the material was not copyrighted since it was "created" by fans from the music to which Atlantic owned the rights. This is one large facet in an industry-wide move right now to close off access to boot recordings, tape trading and Net lyric venues. It is stupid and short-sighted and they will pay for it in the end, but in the meantime the phenomenon is quite real. This year (this is from Reuters) the Feds have seized over 900,000 bootlegs, and recently both Revolver Records and Second Coming Records, two stores specializing in "import" recordings in New York, were busted, the owners put up on criminal charges. (These were quickly reduced, and I believe they are settling out of court. The Feds raided the warehouses and confiscated the CD's, though.) As always, the industry fails to differentiate between pirate recordings and bootlegs. A recent California Court of Appeals decision makes trade fairs and flea markets liable under bootleg laws if they knowingly permit trades and sales of unauthorized recordings on their premises (again, Reuters is the source, wish I'd saved the article). That having been said, the video store story is almost certainly apocryphal: incidental music in small stores probably falls under fair use unless tapes have been made for the specific purpose of repeated in-store play, and the $10,000 fine is a sheer scare number. It's likely that ASCAP registry is the "right" thing to do--I doubt I would do it even if I were dragged into Court, were I the owner of a small store-- but it certainly wouldn't be worth ASCAP's time to prosecute. When they do go out and scare people it is usually at venues where large numbers of people congregate--theatres that play music between or before shows, for example. I've ignored these toads in the past and hope to do so in the future. If you confirm that the letter came from Atlantic you can attempt to negotiate--having Jewel contact her management would be very helpful here - --but in the end you will most likely have to take the lyrics off. It's a nitpicky and awful state of affairs right now with music copyrights, and I suspect it's the first step in what will become an industry-wide price hike, but the labels (Atlantic in particular) are getting very manic about their "ownership" of what is clearly a public medium. If the Atlantic letter is legit, you should contact an attorney (you don't need to retain one, but start off asking at a legal clinic or something) to find out where you actually stand. A letter-writing campaign and some media exposure (properly spun) will help you. But in the end, they will probably win; the law, which clearly needs to be revised, is currently on their side. Smoking supports one of the most insidious businesses ever to disgrace our society. Smoking is a sign of ignorance at best, self-hatred at worst. It is also an embarrassing class issue. The rich own the tobacco stock (and run the health facilities that drain your family of all financial resources as you eventually succumb to the results your addiction), and market the products to the young, the uneducated and the poor. Once the fashionable self-destruction "kick" peaks and subsides with today's young people, the tobacco companies have targeted massive potential markets in third world countries to export this death and misery product to. Picture that, rampant cancer epidemics in countries already too poor to feed their children! The thing is, you smoke today, you fund that genocide tomorrow. In this country, the last two generations have been openly told of the dangers of smoking. Your parents and grandparents were lied to, actually sold on the health benfits (!) smoking provided! To choose to smoke today is to say either: 1) I am ignorant of the ramifications of my decision to smoke, and/or 2) I lack adequate self-love (and respect for myself) to pass up what little "benefit" (shallow image enhancement, peer pressure, temporary physical pleasure) smoking offers versus its far-reaching negative consequences on not only myself, but my society as a whole. If I've offended anyone, fine. The thing is, I give a shit for people. And if I have to piss you off to make you think, so be it.
