Within two hours, I received an email from my What I'd like to happen is for you to post this letter along with the address from which it came (either here, or your website or both). Then we can start a polite yet persistant letter campaign insisting that the presence of Jewels lyrics on the internet can only benifit Atlantic Records and Jewel. This will accomplish two things. It will let people know what jerks they are for making you remove the lyrics. And it might (very unlikely) change their minds when they see the animosity they have created in their customers. The only consideration I can see for Atlantic is if Jewel is planning to include her POY CD lyrics in the book of poems which will be published. This would then make their request more legitimate, in my opinion, since it will be a benefit to Jewel. It is most likely bullshit. MJB? I don't know. I agree with James's reccommended course of action. E-mail Atlantic ASAP with a copy of the letter and a copy of your IP's post and CC it to your IP and see what comes up. If this is genuine it really scares me for a number of reasons. First, it means Jewel does not have nearly enough control over her material. Second, it means corporations are starting to infringe on the openness and liberty that we lovingly call the Internet. Can you imagine if all rights holding companies follow such a trend? AAaaaahhhhhhh......... But, no need to get our panties in a collective wad, it is, in all likelyhood, a grossly concocted hoax. Of all the subjects that can divide the people on this list, smoking is the one that can do it. However, I'm going to turn into that biting, spiting viper that I can be at times. Smoking is not something I tolerate using "Personal Choice" as a defense. Are you sure you didn't just copy a Bob Dole speech? The way you describe American Spirit, one is lead to believe you are talking about a health food product. You did use the disclaimer "if you smoke....". I'm glad you gave me a 800 number I can use to tell them what I think of the tobacco industry. I would like to have you use your imagination and transform the following statements into pictures: A mother carrying a coughing baby in one arm and a lit cigarette in the other. A fireman leaving a fire with a cigarette in his mouth. A car passes you with rolled up windows and the driver is smoking; and worse, the passengers are children. A doctor or nurse smoking. A couple just done with lovemaking and falling asleep with a lit cigarette in hand. Same fireman from before, with a lit cigarette in his mouth as he looks over their charred bodies. A elderly man with advanced lung disease and an emergency oxygen tank next to him. His addiction so strong that he sneaks off to smoke. A person choosing cigarettes over the love of a friend or family member. A chef smoking while preparing your food. A person just after they blew smoke in my face, laying on the ground with a bruised and swollen face with me shoving his cigarettes into his mouth and making him eat them. There are many more pictures in my personal mental gallery that have kept me from smoking. I used to smoke pot and had countless reasons why it was OK. But when I look back, I know I was full of sh**. Drinking alcohol was a problem I had, so I'm not sin free. If I could just work on my problem with coffee and food. Now for my position on lolli-pops. But he does have a point. People in general, not just on these lists, are in a hurry and don't read "the directions". It's normal now-a-days. Example: One buys a new receiver for the stereo system, and it may be days before he/she opens the instruction package...ya jump right in, plug it in and press buttons. Not necessarily good, not neccessarily bad. The list is the same way. No big deal. Some read the FAQ, some don't. Anyway, don't worry about the "hostility", I do NOT think it's from the heart. 99% of the ones who post on this list ARE Angels, we have many different opinions, which is what REALLY makes lists like these great. We share those differences and each grow because of them. I'll tell you one experience I had with lists. I was subbed to the Happy Rhodes list and except for the folks on that list who are on this list also, I was 100% ignored. The ONLY ones who responded to my posts were "jewel-list" members. I even privately EMAILed AT LEAST 10 different people on that list (who were NOT on this one) and NEVER got a response from any of them. Granted, the activity on that list is easily 20% or less as compared to this list. It's just that I felt ignored. So I unsubbed. No big deal. No loss. I may even go back, lurk for a while and join in again. See what happens. Haze, remember this. There are 600 subscriptions to jewel@smoe.org. Along with that comes 600 opinions, personalities, reactions etc. Just like society. I look at joining this list just like moving into a new neighborhood in your town...it's the same thing. Some people are open and greet you, some don't like the "new neighbors", and MANY close their doors and curtains and just "watch" thru the blinds. It's normal in a way. If mailing lists reflect society, I'll take the jewel@smoe.org list EVERYTIME. It's a GREAT bunch of people and you'll see that VERY soon. The lyrics are owned by Wiggly Tooth (Jewel) and the rights for playing it are owned by ASCAP. Even a little mom & pop video store needs to pay to play in store music. I know that because a friend once owned a video rental store. A man entered, looked at movies for a while, came up and said he just listened to five songs. The owner then must pay a fine of $10,000 per song played without authorization or sign up for the program (annual fees, I forget what but it wasn't much). He also said where the court records could be located and that they NEVER lost a case. It was cut and dry.
