We did it. The foundation has been laid, and now it's up to you Angels across the land to build on it. Over three dozen EDAs gathered, driving as far as 13 hours (way to go, Rich Melko!), including the * all-star * van from Pennsylvania (Selena, her daughter Krystal, Amy, Rich and Eric "Crash Boy"). So, JewelStock is OFFICIALLY over and done with. Woo. Hoo. Whew. First, let's get the concert out of the way so we can talk about more important things. Rachel pretty much summed it up. The Casino Club sold out all 1800 seats, and a HELL of a lot of beer to the people behind us. The clown who yelled "I love you Jewel" 4-5 times sat at the table behind Bill (Dawg Boy) and me. Between the chain smoking and beer showers, we were tempted to transform into "Guardian Angels". But these clowns will make Jewel rich, not the 400 of us, so we grin and bear it... Speaking of bears, fleabag Fuzzy was NOWHERE to be found. He probably spotted one of those buttons Rachel was passing out on the main drag and thought better of showing his face. You know, the buttons with a picture of the purple beast with the word "BANNED" across his silly face. Rachel's guest (and our youngest EDA) SweetieDog DID get in. Rob and Tammy Campbell rock! I hoped for a more active jammin' angel group , but it was pretty much me, Dawg Boy, Rob, Tammy and that "tee shirt guy" jamming to Carnivore and such. Like Frank Zappa said, "I'm a Dancin' Fool", just can't sit still. Mike, don't starch your concert tee so heavy next time! BTW, there is no truth to the rumor I shoved $45 into the back of Mike's fruit of the looms for a table dance (I did it cause I like the big lug, and I owed for half the room). As I promised, an empty chair was held for you absent EDAs (not an easy feat at a SOLD OUT show, mind you). O'Brien ate half my Italian sausage sub at 12:30 am, but that's to be expected. And yes, the local Harris real estate empire was indeed part of our growing business venture. We did bury Selena on the beach, fortunately at low tide. No one took me up on my $50 offer to re-word the ballroom marquee to read "THE HARRIS BROTHERS and JEWEL". (Me, I would have done it for $5.) Yes, I again was the last to say "die", wandering deserted beaches at 4:30 am...where have all my angels gone? Eric (previously Crash Boy) is a very cool guy. He gave me pizza at the show, and I didn't even have to whine. WHAT a guy. Skinny Pete, were you there, or just out cruising the strip? Was your cameraman Dave there? Have him email me for the Amiga files again. Akira had a car full of young ladies (Sara, Cara, Lauren and Nikki) who seemed fascinated by my "advanced age". :p Hi to all of you! I hate missing names, so I also have to say hi to Chris and Karen (with the magic purse), Brooklyn, Renee, Tom, Jason, Rich and the Wichenbacherheimercouple as well. If I missed anyone (the breakfast caravan folks are freshest in my mind), let me know. I can't put a name with the hat guy in line who listened so patiently to my stupid stories (aaarrrggghhh!). Congrats to Paul Kim and the Harris Brothers for winning the first ever Jewelympics Full Contact HorseShoe event. Honorable mention goes to Akira for an assisted tackle. Paul Kim bit me (just cause I misunderstood and tackled my own teammate -- twice). I suspect Paul has "Mad Cow" disease (read his posts and you will too), so the shots have to begin tomorrow. If you see an EDA limping at the next J-Party, it's probably me -- or Lisa Gloddy. I saw her on crutches at the show (too cool, THE Lisa Gloddy!). Later, at the party, she stepped over me ten or eleven times on her way to the bathroom. (Imagine that!) The celebrities you meet at these events. She wouldn't yodel, and I respect her for it. After Rachel and SweetieDog left, fun balloon animals and the pony were brought out of hiding from the closet. Don't you just hate it when you don't have enough for everyone and you have to do that? Hey Angels, the $100 the list collected to buy Phil's way backstage was well worth it. You should have seen the smile on the little bugger's face! (Rachel, what was your name for Phil? Butt Nugget?) We collect for Rafa's pass next! Backstage, Phil gave Jewel a photo button of little Dean sitting on my shoulder with Harris Brothers printed on it. Her response? "Oh, cooool. (short pause) You mean HE'S HERE?" (It's nice to have a reputation, even the dubious kind!) Scuttlebutt has it Jewel flew into Boston late around 6 pm, and had a 2 am flight out, so no breakfast plans for Mo, Dawg Boy, the J Girl and me this time! Instead, we did an EDA breakfast. After Connell's grueling death march through the streets of Hampton Beach, we formed a convoy out of town with 7-8 vehicles. How desperate were we? Enough that I took point! On the way to Friendly's, Jared suggested turning on our headlights. Shortly thereafter, a motorcycle cop pulled in front of us. It looked like a damned funeral procession! Breakfast was great, despite having to move table dividers around to accommodate 21 EDAs and the pig tossing between Mo, Paul Kim, Dawg Boy and me. We finished eating, took a lot of pictures (disturbing every bluehair in the place) and began to say our goodbyes. Then we did car repair, life skills training and other stall tactics outside. Phil and I left the parking lot last, almost an hour after walking out of the restaurant. The concensus is we REALLY like hanging with each other. I think the 40 EDAs got to know each other as much (maybe more) than the 200 did at Bearsville. It was funny, because Jewel really took backstage at this weekend's event. Oh, that reminds me. Jewel sang some really cool songs at the Ballroom, and we clapped and sang along. That girl's gonna do alright for herself. - -- Dennis ("Oh cooool...You mean HE'S HERE?") Harris p.s. EDA's, My take on the Hampton Beach show differs a bit from the others'. While I totally agree that the crowd was very rude by NEVER shutting up (seems ALL the attendees who posted so far had the ol' "loud table next to us never shut up" problem), I did not see it as being a hinderence to Jewel. She seemed jovial throughout, was joking around with the band and stage crew, reacted positively to some of the comments yelled out by the crowd and I just feel she had a good time _performing_....yeah maybe she didn't like the crowd overall (one song encore), but she seemed to be definitely in a performing mood as she sang her little butt off _every_ song...really belted out many of the tunes....especially "Carnivore" (I've only seen 3 shows, but this "Carnivore" seemed stronger vocally, weaker instrumentally).... Gotta cut this band some slack of course, while Mark was part of both bands, the JewelStock band had been together a good six weeks. Also concerning the "crowd noise", all I can say is that so far, ALL of the Jewel concerts that Akira & myself have organized have NEVER had that problem ;-) Whaddya say Hiranya???....can we have the job permanently??? I'm sure the WHOLE crew (Phil K, Lisa S, Mr Harris, SkinnyPete & crew, Bill G & Dan S) would LOVE the challenge. We'll do a show each month and move them ALL AROUND THE COUNTRY, maybe even _TOLEDO_ for Liz!!!!! As far as the overall Hampton Beach experience went, let's just say I'd vote for JewelStock '98 to be at a small beach-front town ANYWHERE in the USA [Rafa, can I assume Puerto Rico has beaches?? ;-) ]...while Woodstock was ultimately IDEAL for the initial mega-gathering of EDA's, I can EASILY picture the next one (if we ever be so lucky) at a place similar to Hamptom Beach....west, east or south coast, but a small town/beach. (Casino CLub NOT the place we'd desire, but the small town/beach town...yes!) It was great meeting two dozen or so EDA's again....pure joy. However, while it was not as frightening as Crash Boy's accident on the first night of JewelStock....we were all alarmed, concerned and worried sick when we came to realize the potential seriousness of Paul Kims' condition after he had stupidly risked his life by biting Dennis Harris' leg. The poor lad had to undergo one of those painful series of shots we've all read about. Paul, don't you EVER put us through that again!!!! Mike ------------------------------ From: Crash Boy Date: Tue, 20 Aug 1996 04:02:22 +0000 Subject: My NH thoughts I (i'm splitting this up into two posts) hi guys! what's up? you've probably gone through a number of NH posts, so i'll try to make this short. it probably won't be. well, i woke up at 11am friday to go to work. for some reason, i couldn't go to sleep that night. i was just too excited about the trip. so i stayed up, checked mail, showered, packed. y'know, the usual stuff you're supposed to do before you go on a trip. about 5am, Jack called up and said he couldn't make it, cause he was exhausted from following Neil around on his tour. oh well. 7am rolled around and Selena and company hadn't come by yet. started to make me worry. i called up Amy telling her they hadn't shown, so i told her to take a nap. the doorbell rang 15 minutes later. after loading various foodstuffs into the van, we were off to jersey city. amy was ready at the door, and we were off! finally, the lack of sleep hit me after we left NYC, and i think i must've dozed off for 30-45 minutes. but i didn't close my eyes after that. finally rolled into NH and laughed at the "Harris For Sale" sign. rich wanted to take a picture of it, but we kept on going. found the Oceancrest with Mo Harris in front waiting for us. after waiting for some idiot driver to move, we were able to park. i must say that the beach was the most fun part of the trip, which ultimately made this trip more enjoyable than JS. at JS, we were so limited of what to do/where to go, but the beach at NH allowed a lot more freedom. and it also helped that we already knew each other better, and that there were less of us. of course, the sights on the beach definitely made this trip more enjoyable. ;) volleyball was fun. good jon by akira and rich melko to secure the lame side of the net to the rail on the side of the boardwalk. and thank god for 'enforced pedestrian laws' in NH. we would've lost the volleyball and/or and EDA if the cars hadn't stopped. i think i only hit the ball into the street maybe twice. no more than that. :) of course, volleyball enthusiasm died down after a while. i tried to instill some competitive spirit by keeping points. but that didn't help. then some of the local kids decided to start playing with us without asking. well, i was getting thirsty and hungry, so i ducked out, and enjoyed my wheat thins and gatorade, which everyone ultimately enjoyed. thanks to Amy for finding the girl who was looking for tickets. i had an extra one cause Jack bailed, but the girl bought three off of a bunch of us. akira and i later saw her when we went for our "refreshment run" and invited her to the party at the oceancrest later, but she never showed up. oh well. the rich, phil and i proceeded to play frisbee, with Kyle joining in a bit. then we took it to the water, which was fun. it was a bit cold at first, but we got used to it. hey, who hit that guy in the head? rich or phil? i think it was rich. surprisingly, the guy just kept walking. thought he was gonna cream me, since i was the closest one. burying selena was fun. and akira, stop crediting it to Krystal. :) actually, akira wanted to throw in mike, but decided that he'd gone through enough by having to change his name to a Harris. besides, selena was easier to lift and throw in. although, she was pretty aware of what was going on once tom, akira, and i were within 5 feet of her. she went in kicking and screaming. heh heh. of course, the biggest difference between NH and JS was that i, and a few others, actually got to shower before the show! woo hoo! it felt really good, as opposed to just changing a shirt, like i did at JS. we walked down, dennis and i got some McD's, and waited in line. Rich Soczew showed up to pick up the 8x10 i blew up for him, since he didn't have a camera at JS. nice meeting you again rich. after waiting a while, we finally got in. lara got in without getting ID'd, and we found a nice table near the center. it was as close as we were gonna get with all the damn reserved tables everywhere. thank god we were sitting down, cause we had an incredibly long wait for the show. i finally gave in and bought a pizza, which quickly disappeared. but i did eat three slices. don't know how the hell that happened. ------------------------------ From: Crash Boy Date: Tue, 20 Aug 1996 04:02:26 +0000 Subject: My NH thoughts II i won't go into the show, since everyone else has, but i pretty much felt the same. but i will say this: if any girl ever wants to play with my hair, i will NEVER refuse. :) rachel had some fun with it during and after the show, and Amy wound up giving my braids on the ride home. now, this girl at work wants to braid everything. great. :) of course, we didn't meet jewel. after the facts had been gathered, we deduced that she had left in a separate car after her encore, while the lights were still out. i can't believe i fell for the same trick twice. they did that at Irving Plaza at May, but that was so she could go to the F-Stop afterwards. we knew she was pressed for time, with the 2am flight to Toronto out of Boston, but we thought she may have time for us. oh well, after that crowd, i wouldn't have wanted to stay either. the party afterwards was fun. it was pretty laid back compared to the rest of the day, but we were all due for some rest. listened to the concert and looked at pictures. i wound up not bringing a preview of the cover tape, because it would have only been me, but i did push people to contribute. hey, are any of you going to? the next morning walk around for breakfast was interesting, to say the least. friendly's was a great choice, and right where everyone could leave from easily. unfortunately, it took us 2 hours to figure it out. better late than never. oh, and after we had left friendly's i realized that i had stuck my table with the bill! i'm so sorry! i got caught up with leaving and saying goodbyes. Jared, Rene, and Anthony, sorry about that. i'll pay you if you really want. the trip home was interesting. missing exits, backing up on highways, y'know, all the fun stuff you do driving through NYC. unfortunately, selena never got to use the horn. dammit. :) we dropped off amy at jersey city, and i gave rich and krystal a preview of the cover tape with my rendition of 'Carnivore'. selena missed out cause she was outside in the van. oh well. she's gonna have to wait. heh heh. then finally back home. selena, thanks for driving. you're so patient. rich, why're always so calm and collected? amy, aren't you glad you came? believe in the healing powers of Jewel! and krystal, who was so shy and quite at first, finally started warming up to everyone. she started calling me Trashboy after Amy's insistence, since i was closer to the garbage bag than either of them. of course, once i got home, i had to change and leave right away to go to a work meeting at Bennigan's that night. selena dropped me off about 7:15pm, left at 7:30pm, and didn't get home 'til 11:45 that night. ack! but i did have the unique experience of eating breakfast at a Friendly's in New Hampshire, lunch at a McDonald's in Conneticut, and dinner at a Bennigan's in New Jersey, all in one day. funny, eh? well, that's it for my thoughts. quick and to the point, eh? Someone behind me was so moved by Jewel's two opening acoustic numbers that he had to shout "YOU SUCK!!!" at least four or five times in a row. But once the band came on, and Jewel cut the in-between banter to a minimum, things seemed to roll. The crowd generally started talking less, and clapping more after each successive song. There even seemed to be genuine cheering after CHIME BELLS (I wasn't sure that was the best song to end for this crowd, but it worked, so sue me). I will say this, the sound was as bad as I have ever heard at MSG, which was too bad because overall it was a great concert (you gotta like the electric cellist in Afghan Whigs). And I don't necessarily agree with her statement either (but mainly because I believe that Governor Pete Wilson of CA is the anti-christ and is particularly deserving of some quick two-fisted justice), but I think some things kinda have to be taken with a grain of salt. There are certain celebrities and such that I myself look at and kinda go, "I would give my own life if that person could die." (=cast of 90210 ;p ) That basically translates to, "that dude/chick annoys the living pee out of me." That's all she was trying to say, I'm sure. Because so many look to her as a source of inspiration and place her on higher ground they also hold her to higher standards than the rest of us. That is the same relationship between a lot of artists and their fans, methinks. But it occurs to me that she is as human as you and I (albeit with more talent on the average), and as long as that holds I think it behooves us, especially as devotees, to cut her some slack. I think that like anybody else, she's entitled to be annoyed, or feel hate, or hurt, or anything else that one can feel. It's true that the goal is to rise above the hatred and pettiness and cruelty and sarcasms, but that's why we call them goals -- they are still things yet to be achieved in full. Otherwise, we all really would be angels. On a less serious note, I was wondering if Hiranya could ask Jewel if she prefers Cocoa or Fruity Pebbles. I'm a cocoa guy myself.
