Unfortunately, I rambled to everyone and now it is too late, but this post actually does have a few assorted points so read on... Patti Rotheberg: I don't have the CD because I couldn't decide if I'd like more songs like the single. But I just so happened to be outside the Tramps show and it was really cool. She played a tremendous amount of non-album songs from what I heard people say, but whatever it was it was pretty cool. She's really poppy, not really deep, but there is definitely a place for light-hearted pop... Whoever asked about the Neil Young opening slots, I don't think it'll be DMB because I just got sent their tour schedule and they have another show that day. One more thing is a note for all the newbies who are sending me tapes (I took on about a dozen more in the last week, I feel like Neile before she escaped with her poetry... Although, at least I'm not compiling like Dan...) please write me if you will not be sending them out in the next week. I'm going down to school and you'll have to send them there... It is quite depressing actually...I wanna be there! :-( Anyway, I was just sitting in front of my tv today watching Comedy Central and for some reason I was thinking about Jewel(I never think about her! ;)). Well I was remembering that when I first subscribed to RS magazine that I had seen a picture of Jewel w/ Sean Penn. I remember when I saw it I was like "cool...it is jewel." That was when I was in love with WWSYS but I didn't know her other music too well. I put the magazine off to the side to cut out the picture but I must have forgotten about it. So today...after remembering this picture after an entire year...I dug out all of my old RS. After browsing through the third one I found it!!!!! The picture is really cute...she is sitting on a counter laughing and Sean Penn is sitting next to her laughing. It says something about how Sean was talking about how much he likes her as a person and musician. It was so weird that I all of a sudden remembered the picture today after a whole year. If anyone wasn't into Jewel as much as they are now and has past issues of RS the picture is in the Sept 7, 1995 edition with Alicia Silverstone on the cover. I also thought that the page was funny because it has a picture of Jill Sobule, Son Volt and Jewel all of whom I was introduced to by VH1 Crossroads that summer. Pretty cool eh??? Well that is about it...maybe I should be excited...I get to go see the Cranberries today...I guess nothing is the same since JS...I am not even that excited to see Melissa Etheridge...strange thought for those who know me well...Sarah. I am excited about the 29th though!!!! The Cranberries should be fun though...I am going with Sarah and Shelly...yes my 6' tall sister is taking me to yet another concert! The possibility to connect with an audience when you're all alone is immense," she notes. It may remind her of her humble beginnings. "My parents were folk singers, and I grew up singing with them in hotels. My first show was when I was 6, in Anchorage in front of 800 people. I was so nervous I got the hiccups when I was yodeling." - - "Some horses are workhorses," she says. "Some are racehorses. I'm a showhorse. I'm an entertainer. I'm not an artist who believes in turning their back to the audience. I believe you should put on a good show." - - By all accounts, she does. A virtual unknown last July, she still drew a large throng at Winter Park's American Music Festival. Many were pulled in by Jewel's tales of jilted spouses and bittersweet romances and the way she flirted with the crowd. - - "I'm very thankful for artists who've gone before me, like Madonna, who've given me this freedom and luxury that I now experience. But some of the female artists today carry their feminism like a cross," she laughs. "I'm more of a humanist; I embrace the differences between men and women. I don't mind being flirtatious. You can be smart and girlish and naive and sexy and wise all at the same time." - - Jerry - - - --------------------------------------------------------- Get Your *Web-Based* Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com - --------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ From: Leave the shadows dancing Date: Sat, 17 Aug 1996 17:26:09 -0500 (EST) Subject: Jewel on the Web - Searchable Lyrics Archive Hi everyone! =) Instead of working on making my site pretty, I've been adding features. :) I just put a list of all the Jewel stuff I could find (at the time) in a few days ago. Yes, I have, much to my delight! Sounds pretty good (what I've heard of it so far), too! There will be a *possible* double-tree of this and the NYC 5-16-96 show sometime this fall. I'm really busy now with the Neil tour, etc and won't be home much until after Labor Day. My primary dubbing for a while will be for trading tapes of the current tour (both Neil and if possible, Jewel's sets also), and also making dubs of my masters for people. But I will try to get this going by the fall, after all I did propose a tree for 5-16 a while back, anyway... I know some of you won't be able to wait for the tree and email me requesting a copy. I had a nice little conversation with the DJ who let on to me that they had a copy of STL! I also got her to play Quiet Warrior, which we promptly taped! Here's my question: Does anyone have a good idea of how I can go about getting that copy of STL from the radio station, or perhaps just convincing them to let me copy it???? I called in sick around 9 in the morning (and no, praise Allah, I didn't get fired) and Lara and I got on the road around 12:30 or 1. We got to the beach at 3 and spent an hour and a half wandering around, Looking for JS t-shirts, and wondering where everybody was. Around 4:30 we bumped into Paul Kim and kyle Audette who told us that every one was at Ocean View. Duh. So we went there and found Akira and Crash Boy ( sorry, Rich and Eric) and they immediately ran screaming from us. All right , all right, they were just on a refreshment run :). Lara and I went and got pizza ( and the pizza guy was VERY happy to see Lara :) ) and came back to find everyone. I'm gonna try to remember who everybody was, but I'm gonna fail miserably... Mike Connell, Rich Melko, Dog Boy, Lauren (who I called Amy by mistake, I'm sorry ! ) & her friend, the REAL Amy, Selena and her daughter (what a cutie ) , Dennis, Phil K., the Elmo Man , I'm sure I'm missing a bunch of people, I'm sorry :). Anyway, we all got in line and started the long and tedious process of finding Lara a family member to get her in the door. No fathers for her, but we DID get 2 brothers, an uncle, and a Mom. Paul got us seats inside, and they were pretty damn good- basically ,the closest you could get to the stage without being a middle-aged couple who owned the reserved seats. The opening band came out, and, not only do I not remember her name, I also didn't like her too much. Eek, please don't stone me :). She plays a killer violin, tho'. So, anyway, finally, Jewel comes out. The audience must have screamed for a good 5 minutes, and Jewel ramarked, "Wow, I should come here more often!". But, um, later in the show, I think she might have wanted to take that statement back. The problem was, the audience never shut up. They yelled "I love you" through the whole show, screamed about everything, and they didn't really seem to have a clue the one time she asked for requests. Even so, I thought she sounded incredible. I didn't get the set list, but I know some people did, so don't worry. She didn't do any of her little cutesy songs except for "Cold Song", and all of her pretty little love songs sounded angry. She barely did any audience participation, but she talked about Bob Dole being dead and the whole Mexico Steve/pot/guerillas story. It was funny, because I thought I would hate the band songs, but I really loved them. She did "Chime Bells", but she didn't ask if she should go faster, she just did it. She also did one encore, "WWSYS", and I actually thought it was good. No amount of overplaying could kill that song ! So, the show was over. A bunch of us, okay, I think all of us, waited by the tour bus to see if she'd come out. But someone had said earlier to Phil (who got a backstage pass, lucky buttnugget ;) ) that if there were lots of people expecting autographs, she wouldn't come out, 'cause she was a little pressed for time. There were about 100 people in the lot, and sure enough, she didn't come out (unless she was in one of those trashbags...) and we headed back to Ocean View around 12:30. We actually got to hear an instant replay of the concert, which was VERY cool. It wasn't quite like the PineCrest party, because we actually had to be quiet, so we all just sat on the porch and talked . Lara and I ended up leaving around 2 to drive home. God,was I tired, But, Eric, see ? Being really tired does NOT cause you to smash into guradrails :). We got home, finally, around 4:30ish. Lara's parents were waiting at the door for her... they had actually been worried, and called he car phone, but I had it turned off 'cause I didn't know you have to turn them on. I never said I was miss technology. And , yes, fuzzy was there, but he skipped the concert. He was actually downstairs in the Deadhead store, hangin' out with a green and a yellow bear. Fish family reunion ? I dunno :). Anyway, I had a really great time. I personally thought the crowd sucked, but the music was better than JS. No problems, no people not getting in, not too many requests for yodeling... all in all, I'd call it very nearly a perfect night :). Thanks to everybody for being such great angels, and I can't wait to see everybody again !!! :), Rachel PS- oh, and Fuzzy has a new brother- Capricious the lobster.
