(I had a similar feeling when I saw Jewel for the first time on TV, right there on Letterman. Hmm... I LOVE that show now) Well, here is where fate steps in. I fell asleep after the song was over, but I awakened and turned the television back on just in time for a local music video show to come on, guest-hosted by none other than Patti Rothberg. Of course they showcased her video, which was nice, but the thing that has won me over completely is that she did a live acoustic version of, I think, Forgive Me. Anyone who hasn't listened to her, do it, I'll bet you buy the record. Anyone who has, e-mail me and comfort me with your descriptions of it till I can scrape together enough cash to go to the record store. And right before JS. Can anyone confirm what this is? It is expensive at $50, though that looks to be cheap for the usual stuff. The company, in case some interest or possible prosecution exists, is The Old Hippie PO Box 1914, Lawrence, KS 66044-8914 They have a homepage at www.csmonline.com/old-hippie It's in the Super Hot New Releases section. They claim no bootlegs nor tapes off the radio. What is this??? It is expensive, but for a high quality rendering of material on CD, as long as it is Jewel/Lenedra approved, I'd consider buying it. There are 37 of us last count, with many rooms at the OceanCrest (I think) reserved. We will have an afternoon Beach Blanket Bongo (with improvised food and drink, beach volleyball and burying Mo and Akira up to their necks in sand) early afternoon. After the "singing portion" of the day's entertainment, the Harris Hospitality Suite is open for guests! BTW, for entertainment we have booked none other than * Jewel Kilcher * at the Casino Club! Pretty appropriate, huh? WOO-HOO! The key is to FIND US...no one complains afterwards that they couldn't find us! We're at the OceanCrest, we're on the beach, we're at the doors by 6 pm (maybe earlier)...if we can arrange a loose schedule, it will be on the web page. Anyway, Rob has side posted everyone listed on the web page so we can chit-chat offline and save Jeff some aggravation. (Great idea) But we'll still share stories and assorted lies with the rest of the list next week... In addition, maybe we can do an AOL chat room Friday night at say, 8:30 pm? Look for chat room JSNIGHT3 !!! ***Speaking of lies, PutzMan and Wiggy made a reference to pathelogical liars (implicating me, no doubt). Well, in my defense: Of course Jewel knows me. In fact, the last four times we have seen each other face-to-face (NOT face-to-crowd), her exact words have been as follows: 1) "Don't I know you?" (referring to a previous Boston Paradise show) 2) "Who the HELL are the Harris Brothers?!?" (referring to the proliferation of "Harris" buttons at JewelStock) 3) "This is the Harris Brothers, right?" (as she returned for the famous THIRD encore at JewelStock night 2) 4) "Pass the sweet and sour sauce, will ya, Den?" (lunch) (Oh yeah? PROVE me wrong!) ***An EDA posted regarding an interview where Jewel said she was a star, not a fish. My philosophy on the STAR vs. FISH question? Well me, I'm a STARfish. I'm only part of Jewel's "fish family" (listen to the song), but in my world, I'm center stage. Or as many who have met me will attest, center ring in a three ring circus (or was that a three ring binder? Hmmm...). The point is to live your life ACTIVELY, not vicariously through others. You bet Jewel's a star. Admire her brightness in the clear night sky and share her beauty with those around you. But never underestimate your importance in the scheme of things! - -- Dennis (filling my sand bucket) Harris p.s. She will do different styles of music as well and most of all wants to not get pegged into one type of music. She hopes she can develop a fan base of people who are interested in her as an artist that experiments, succeeds, "fails", changes. She will over time also establish herself as a writer, the poetry book she is putting together to coincide with release of her new CD is a move in the direction. She also writes short stories and plays/musicals and hopes for opportunities in this area later on. She will also move into acting: broadway and movies when the time is right. Right now she will spend her time very focused on music. She suspects that eventually she will add her visual art--drawings paintings sculptures to her work too. This is all over the course of an at least 50 year career. When Lenedra was discussing this with me she told me about an interview she saw with one of China's foremost writers and and national treasure there. He said he regretted that he would be unable to have the point of his greatest work in his career. This shocked the interviewer because his work is so wonderful now. When questioned this 65 year old man said that the work of an artist in their 40+ years of working is very special in its refinement and power. He said because of the years that he was persecuted and prevented from working (under Mao, I think, when all intellectual were killed, imprisoned, etc) he was robbed of 25 years of development that he will never be able to recover. Interesting thought. Lenedra said special attention is being given to assure that Jewel continue to develope in her art and not get overwhelmed by all the demands and celebrity that that are extraneous to this. I want to say that the most incredible thing for me is being able to be around this woman. She has a wisdom and peace, that Ive never seen. If all artists had the support of such a brilliant understanding of the creative process as Lenedra has I think genius would abound. And she is the most non- judgmental, and unconditionally loving person I know. Shes also incredible at business and has a very unique way of work- in that is stress free, has high integrity, and is really except- ional in this business. She teaches me so much that I just couldnt help raving about her a little. Its easy to see how Jewel is where she is on a lot of levels. This year, Keith and Kent Zimmerman suggested something new: Psychics. (Maybe they've been watching too much late-night TV.) All our editors liked the idea (I knew they would), and submitted names of upcoming artists, or musicians at a pivotal point in their careers. We called on the American Association of Professional Psychics, whose founder, Gail Summer, developed and managed the first psychic hotlines.
