The date was Thursday May 16, 1996. Jewel had just finished the worst of my seven Jewel concerts but the excitement was in the air. Our helpless but talented archangel had finally made it in a competative industry. I can never discribe the chest bursting pride that I felt standing there watching this little girl receive the golden trophy. And I'll never forget the feeling in all our hearts of knowing that all of her work and all of her talent "carried her through the darkest of times"(StL track 2). I never did get my chance to look her in the eye and congratulate her, that lack of a memory burns inside me. Now she has not only succeeded but excelled in her chosen field. Now she is not half an hour away in New York but rather 110 hours away in Los Angeles. I guess this is just my superdeformed way of saying congratulations to: 1.Jewel Kilcher:You made it to the top of a harsh cold world 2.Lenedra:No one ever supported your daughter more then you did. For twenty two years without a break. 3.The others that helped Jewel through the tough time before stardome was a thought. 4.The good people at Atlantic who didn't give up on an album that looked less then promising after a full year of release. 5.The fantastic fanatics that made every possible effort to promote the album, whether playing it for a friend, suggesting it or taking a friend to a concert. Everything helped. 6.The other million people who liked WWSYS and took a chance on the album. Even if they didn't like it, without them there would be no platnium. 7.The DJs that "Couldn't ignore her anymore" true or not, they didn't ignore her anymore and they procured major numbers of sales. 8.Anyone who may never have heard of Jewel but still feel good because others feel good for her. If any other list members where at the -stop that night I'd love to hear your stories. We may have look each other in the eyes and had no knowledge of it. A stagehand went into labor and JEWEL DELIVERED IT !!!!!!! But my favorite part of the night was the "one named grudge match" when she and Flea tag-teamed against Roseanne and Kennedy AND KICKED A LITTLE ASS !!!!!! I first saw Jewel on some MTV News thing like in spring, with her yodeling and playing the guitar... then she goes "Want me to do it faster?" and everybody's like "WOOOO HOOO! YOU ROCK!" then she goes into a yodel that would make Thijs Van Leer stand in awe (if any of you dont know him, dont worry... it's 70s stuff.... you're too young course i shouldnt say anything im not past my teens yet myself). Third thing to say - what other bands/artists do you all listen to? I feel out of place, from what I've seen you all listen to mainly laid back people, but right now I'm listening to Rush, right after finishing my Pink Floyd Cd. We need to grow up, live in the real world for a while, listen to Jewel, and get more in touch with our softer, gentler, feminine side. I like to watch people (no, not in that way, Dennis ;) ) as they communicate, in the mall, at the pool I work at (hell, I guess I get paid to watch people) and I've decided it's a rare male that doesn't suck. Charlie put it best, I think, although he lost me at the wandering part...don't we men always get lost and never stop to ask directions? Oh, ok, that explains the wandering part... BTW, Charlie, you know why you haven't met anyone from the list? It's because you live in BFE! Come on, Missoula??? Could you live any farther from civilization ;) ;) ;) <- Just to get the point across. No, really, it's great to see a sane person in my HOMETOWN. Yep, born at St. Patricks Hospital, Nov. 4th, 1972. The day Nixon was elected??? Or so my parents tell me...But it sucks, I can't tell my friends to piss off when they kid me about the Freemen and the Unibomber...nevermind, I'm rambling...so I'll continue... Today i started a new job. Well, new location, same occupation. But they have a PA system (public pool) and my good friend's the manager, and he wanted to put some tunes on, but all he can get is country. I'm scrubbing green stuff of the bottom of the pool, so he calls over, "Hey Matt, you gots that Jewel tape in your car?" And I responds "Fuck you!" (I was mad he was making me scrub green stuff off the bottom, and I didn't hear him) To make a pointless story longer, I'll put this sentence in to say it's pointless. I did, (Rare Angels) and he went out and got it, put it in, ect, I was jamming in the pool, scrubbing green stuff off the bottom (real galm job, believe me) and this other guard comes over, saying, "Geeze, this stuff will put me to sleep, why did Brian put this in?" I bit my lip, 'less I jump out of the pool and rip this guy a new, uh, nostril... But I refrained, saying "...Jewel's good for a mellow late summer afternoon, humor him..." but inside, I wanted to slap him upside his short-haired head and scream "How could you not like Jewel??? What are you some kind of toad raper? Get down and kiss my feet for bringing in this wonderful opportunity for musical enlightenment!!!" I think he was one of Liz's sucky men. Is thining about doing something as bad as actually doing it? Aside from legal and really, really sick things, have I tarnished my karma for thinking bad thoughts? Anyway, back to my story...Later, I was guarding (the tape was out, a station was on) and WWSYS came on, I was mouthing the words (I just can't ruin it with my singing, and the kids would have looked at me funny) and the same guy came up and asked me if I knew who sang this song...well, I told him the same artist who was on earlier...on my tape...Jewel... And he changed his tune pretty quickly...saying "Oh, I like her, she's got nice ti..." I kicked him in the teeth, but you can't do much damage in bare feet, tho I did get my toe ring caught on his lip ;).... Sorry it's taking so long (Jeff) but I drank too much dark caffenated beverages tonight, and I tend to type and not really think, it just all comes out. Well, that's my story, and I'm sticking to it... Later all, welcome to my maddness, and hi to all the new people on the list!!!! I was finally able to get the Sept. issue of Request magazine that the Sam Goody Music stores put out. As most of you know, Jewel is featured on the cover and there is a 4 page article with 3 photos of Jewel inside. After reading some of the posts re: this issue, i decided to try and help out a couple of people that apparently don't have a Sam Goody store in their area. I was able to get a few extra copies of the magazine, and am willing to pass them along. The magazines are free at the store, so all it will cost you is postage. If you are interested in obtaining a copy, please e-mail me directly so as not to take up space on the list, and i'll e-mail you my address. These will go on a first come, first served basis. You will have to send me a magazine size s.a.s.e. , and i'll get it to the post office asap. Supply is limited (the store doesn't like it when you take a whole bunch of them at one time), so if my supply runs out before you get a copy, my apologies ahead of time. I'm very interested in any leads on tapes of Jewel at concerts or whatever. I've tried a couple of times to get included on the tape trees, but so far no luck. If anyone can help out here, i would appreciate it. I have a bunch of blank tapes ready to mail out, but nowhere to send them. While at the music store i bought the MOM cd that has Jewel's song "Quiet Warrior" on it. As many of you know, I have a problem with the English language. Yea, I've been here a long time but I still get confused. All this talk about guys suck, brings back bad memories of my youth. When I first started hearing people use the word suck, they did so with so many expressions on there faces and with so many word combinations, it was very hard to make out the true meaning. You know how you can at times figure out what a word means just by how its used or how its said. Let me give you some examples of how I've heard it used. She sucks. - Said with a smile. Sometimes as an answer to "how was she"? She sucks. - Said while cowardly pointing at someone. She sucks. - Said by a male while walking around like a rooster shortly after getting out of the back seat of a car. She sucks. - Said in a whisper by a gathered group of males. Usually followed by everyone calling for dates. She sucks! - Said with anger. Usually sign of a bad date. She sucks? - Said as a question. She sucks? - Said with suprise. He sucks! - Said with anger. Sometimes as an answer to "how was he" He sucks! - Said very often at sporting events. He sucks. - Said as a warning. He sucks. - Said with a smile by another male. This is only a short list. I've heard it used with the words you, they, and I. Other forms of the word appear as sucked, sucking and sometimes suck. When I went into my thesaurus, I found the word slurp. I tried using it instead but it just doesn't sound the same. Something is lost in the translation. This is all said by me to encourage discussion. But I can see my mailbox filling up with one line posts with the words, YOU SUCK. But then I'll just be pissed off. Or is it pissed on? I just get easily confused. Just trying to suck up.
