Things like freedom of speech, but not being insensitive to others feelings, once the news-list is set up write up the guidlines for posting to that, the right to express oneself to the list with out fear of being looked down-upon by those feelings, the right to arm bears, that everyone should be respected untill the time that they loss that respect, etc... I know this is pretty basic stuff and is largely already practiced on the list, there have been in the time I have been on, very few infractions, and those by people who have obivously joined for the wrong reasons or, like Brett (sorry to bring it up again) made a small either judgemental error or failed to express themselves the way he ment it and are now forgivin by the list at large maybe this is just the old Model UNer in me popping back out, but I thought it might be worth wilded, and of course any such constitution would have to be approved/signed by atleast 90%+ of the list, preferably 100%. Maybe we should table this topic for a time when the list is basically dead or tackel it right now, this I leave up to the group, though I will be willing to write up a rough draft and post it on my page for all to read. now off to work on my sociology paper, thanks for the help the few that responded to my request I wasn't expecting any but Mike's led me to a really neat page and I might just include some of James' story in the paper, your humble servents, Robb and Sgt. I just wanted to tell you that i will be thinking of all of you on my flight and i'm sure that will calm any nerves. When my plane is somewhere over the middle United States it will be a JewelStock aniversary- has it been 3 weeks already? Such a great time- thank you all for the memories and for what is to come. Well, being new to the list I thought I'd just say that....... well what do you know, I have nothing to say. That's okay, I'm sure if anyone is curious about me, they'll post and ask loads of questions. I love answering questions. I also like asking them and having other people answer them. So, on that note, does anyone know where I can get Jewel guitar tabs??? I'm going to be busking with a friend of mine in a few weeks and we might do some Jewel, ie. Gear ------------------------------ From: Selena Martin Date: Tue, 06 Aug 1996 08:19:52 -0700 Subject: ramblin' on I'm in a rambling mood. My taste in music is fairly predictable. For my age. :) If I were 18, I would prolly like the same music that my friends like. So, being a child of the 70's, my musical influences were (don't worry I won't say Cyndi Lauper, Duran Duran) Stevie Nicks, Heart, Pat Benatar, Bob Seger, Tom Petty, Kiss, AeroSmith, Led Zeppelin, Carpenters, Jim Croce, Stevie Nicks, Joan Baez, Carly Simon, Elton John, Foreigner, Stevie Nicks. And the list goes on to include what you would expect it to include. Did I mention Stevie Nicks? Now I'm going to vent. Stevie was a superstar. She was a legend. Now that she doesn't look the same, she is poked fun at. It makes me cringe. She just isn't sexy enough anymore. Ok, her voice has lowered, but she still has got it. Her poetry and her art is everything it has ever been. Another example is Heart. These girls kicked ass. Then the one got heavy. Now they both are heavy. Their latest release is a mostly accoustic live concert given for 500 fans. The stage was set up to resemble a living room and they even included favorite things from their own homes. The cd is pure. How else can I describe it? These girls can sing. "Crazy on You" sends shivers up an down my spine. Now why can the men get old and ugly and still be superstars and the women can't. Look at Aerosmith, Tom Petty (ok, he was always homely), Mick Jaggar, Rod Stewart. I'm not sure what my point is. Is this something that could happen to Jewel? Surely Tori wouldn't be as appreciated if she didn't ooze sexuality? Am I wrong? No you don't, at least not if you are just looking at the from address es in his mail. He has been connecting from an alternet dialup, apparently forging his mail through the same server every time. Alternet's access logs should be able to point out which of their customers is the guilty party and terminate his access. We'll see if they are not too busy to help us out. This is not going to be able to stop anything however, since he will just get with another ISP (or steal a new account, whichever he did), and keep on going. There's not much that can be done, with the current internet protocols, to proactively prevent someone who wants to do something like this. ------------------------------ From: Linus Gelber Date: Tue, 6 Aug 1996 08:39:11 -0400 (EDT) Subject: No More Seattle Folks, Please! However, she's been around for a long time, and has several books of poetry out as well as several excellent albums. She's really one of the founders of the alternative musician scene. Her latest "Gone Again" deals primarily with the topics of death and loss, as she recently lost her husband Fred Smith (of the group MC5). She also had a hit about 7 years ago with a song "People Have the Power" from the album "Dream of Life"--a remarkable optimistic album. Patti has been around a long time and was part of the Chelsea Hotel art crowd in New York back in the 70s. She dated Robert Mapplethorpe for quite a while, and also dated playwright Sam Shepard. I think repeated her name as a way to invoke her spirit to help give her confidence, as she is one of the few female rock musicians who is also a talented and well-respected poet. In the eighties and start of the nineties their was a band called IT BITES. They're a lot different than his solo work but you can tell the influences. They were a band with a progressive, melodic, intense musical and lyrical compositions. Personally, I think they were awesome but mishandled and destroyed by Geffen. Don't buy any of their American releases, go with the IMPORT ONLY Virgin releases. Look for them in import stores, small shops, etc. They are: The Big Lad in The Windmill Once Around the World (the 9 song version) Eat Me In St. Louis There was an american release of Once Around the World that was mutilated. The 14 minute title song was eliminated. A 9 minute song was cut to 3 minutes. Instead of a 60 minute, 9 song album, it became about a 25-30 minute 4-5 song EP. It was terrible management. There was an awesome song called "Kiss Like Judas" which got a cult following in Michigan. The full length single with the 2-3 minute guitar intro (which I have!) is rare and very valuable. And then Geffen stepped and released "first American release." Yeah right, it was a collection of chopped up songs from the previous releases. These problems ultimately led to the band breaking up. Francis invented his own instrument which he plays solo on the final track on Eat Me in St. Louis. Beautiful stuff. I saw him play it once at one of their concerts. It's like a guitar that he plays like a piano, sort of. That was 1989 so it's hard to recall. There's also a beautiful, heartbreaking song (Ice Melts Into Water) about a father dealing with the loss of his little daughter. Aagh, I want to listen to it now. I wish I had it with me now.
