As my friend Kevin would say, "I like them all. I just like some more than I like others". He said this in response to another question, but it fits as an answer for me so often. POY is more like a book with every song a chapter and every chapter a must read. Otherwise you won't get it. There isn't even one song that I hit the forward button for. None of the songs have become overplayed for me because with each listen they bring new meaning. I do hunger very much for more than my solo POY and can't wait for her new CD. One song does move me more than any of the others. Adrian. For the writer that said she didn't like that song, replace Adrian with Christopher Reeves and in the line "Adrian come out and play" with, "daddy come out and play". This is the song that makes this grown man cry. I have always been drawn to the weak, the poor, the hurting, the underdog. I need to see and feel there pain. I want to question why. I want to know what I can do to help. I want to know what I can do to make a difference. I read a book "Johnny Got His Gun" about the horrors of war and it changed my life. As a young teen I watched on black and white TV as high pressure fire hoses and dogs were used against other humans just asking for equal rights. As a little boy I watched my father argue bitterly in his broken English with a restaurant owner that refused to let him buy a meal for a homeless person. But life has beat me back from my mission and I lost a lot of feelings. That is until I first listened to Jewel and than found all of you wonderful Every Day Angels. I'm starting to feel again. It seems that if there is going to be a tape tree on this list, it should be packed with as much jewel footage as possible. I am reluctant to send off a tape for three rare videos of a song I've heard a million times. Sure I want them, but if I'm going to send out a tape, I would like to have a full 2 hrs of Jewel material. I know there are people on the list that have good copies of many of her appearances and rare videos and such, and they are willing to help in this endeavor. I have been on this list for almost a year now and there has been talk about making a video before. They were waiting till there was enough Jewel footage and now there certainly is. So maybe someone can take charge of this. Unfortunately I don't have anything to offer to the compilation, I really wish I did. Hopefully I have sparked someone to take an initiative. I, and many others I suppose, would love to see this happen. Thanks for hearing me out, for those who didn't delete me on start. J.A.K.E. Sorry for being >sappy and corny. I have to agree totally here with Pete, I've always believed that no one is born ugly but rather it is something that you make yourself. Like in the movie Welcome to the Dollhouse, the main girl was treated so badly by her peers for being ugly, I didn't think she was the that at all, and given time to mature and grow up the actress/character will be attractive. Jewel is just one of those people, wether it be lucky or not, who is born with the looks that are found attractive to the general public of this time. I happen to like how she looks myself, the way her hair was all frizzeled the first night of JS was so great, that's how I like to wear my hair for those who saw me, now I've never found blondes especially attractive before but maybe its because of Jewel's honesty and sincerity about everything that makes me love her. I don't know about the rest of you who were at JS, but when she was reading poetry and asked us not to clap after every song because it made her nervous I just fell in love all over again, then when she was talking about the hole in her shirt and several other places. Not the kind of love you have with a lover, not like with family, but something beyond age, looks, gender, and this world that is the love I feel for Jewel. Not fanatical, not divine, not put up on a pedistal, but for her heart and to wish to be like her in her sincerity and expression of emotion. > and yet again Pete says it first and very eloquintly btw: how are those knees Pete after filming at JS > >P.S. Unless I did and SuPeRdEfOrMeD aNgEl had another post where he inserted foot in mouth, I guess I'm squarely on his side of the line. Hell, we should ALL be ashamed we live in and accept such a weak-minded society to tolerate abuse like Amy described. I know I am. As I see it, you live in this world, and have three options: 1) You can aggravate the problem (ANY problem, take your pick). 2) You can ignore the problem. 3) You can fix the problem. If you're #1, you are detrimental to yourself and the society you live in. If #2, you make no difference in the picture beyond endorsing the current situation through your silence. If you strive for #3, you are serving a purpose in this life. Now, I have strong opinions, and my pubes developed quite a while ago. I agree in principle with SuPeRdEfOrMeD aNgEl's post. "Feel good" love beats the hell out of apathy and bitterness, any day of the week. If sensitivity bothers you so much, you probably need more of it. Now (to totally discredit everything I've said so far), the attack on this person reminds me of the Kevin Kostner line in Robin Hood -- "Have I wronged you in a previous life?" It certainly sounds personal between the two of you. Jesse, if I missed a post somewhere, let me know and I'll rescind comments as appropriate. Until then, we all have to motivate the #2 group types to become better human beings and do some fast damage control with the #1 group types. - -- Dennis (wasn't he funny when he was younger?) People should only have to EARN admiration. Now, I RESPECT Jewel's approach to her art and her hard-working attitude. In fact, I also ADMIRE her hard-working attitude. The key is to RESPECT Jewel as a person. No more or no less than anyone else (who hasn't lost or built on your respect for them). Let her speak candidly, and cut her the same slack we all need from time to time. I ADMIRE Jewel's beautiful singing voice and stage presence. I don't know enough about her life views (short of the sound bytes and slices we are given from time to time), so I can retain respect for her in these areas, but how could I possibly ADMIRE her for them? That's why when Jewel expresses an opinion (Olympics, recycling, whatever), I listen with an interest, but I don't hang on every word. It isn't gospel, just another opinion. I don't have to agree with everyone on a "soul mate" level, and wouldn't want to dilute (and certainly not totally bastardize) my views just because I ADMIRED some aspect of that person. That takes it from being a healthy relationship to a potentially harmful obsession. This goes for all things in life. So, this post covers my two cents on respect, admiration and the threads about what Jewel can and can't do or say... - -- Dennis p.s. About overused imagery. Ive noticed this too. But as a visual artist, I know that most (even famous) artists use repeated imagery. Over a period years certain themes and symbols are apparant in an artists work, used because of the artists conscious or unconscious connection to them or feeling about what they sympolize in our culture or world. To me its more interesting to wonder what and why she chooses the particular imagery to repeat, than it is to discount the images as being too frequently used. It just aired on Bravo last night, so it will probably air again soon. It's also available on video. It's directed by Jean-Jacques Bieniex and is almost as good as his masterpiece (and my favorite film), Betty Blue. The use of color in his films is unbelievable, and he's great at incorporating the soundtrack into the film as well (particularly in Betty Blue). Speaking of favorites, here are some of mine: Favorite Artists: (no particular order) Jewel, Alison Moyet (best voice--not necessarily best song-writer), Happy Rhodes, Kate Bush, Jane Siberry, Eurythmics, Victoria Williams, Veda Hille, Rebecca Timmons, Dar Williams, Melissa Ferrick, Patti Smith, Horse, Portishead, Cocteau Twins, Lisa Gerard/Dead Can Dance, This Mortal Coil, Blondie, Lena Horne, Dinah Washington, Renaissance, Holly Cole, Jane Kelly Williams, Sarah McLachlan, Sinead O'Connor, Concrete Blonde, Maria McKee/Lone Justice, Berlin, Mari Boine, The Wild Colonials, and many more I'm sure I'm forgetting. Favorite Albums: 1. Kate Bush - Hounds of Love/The Dreaming 2. Jane Siberry - When I Was a Boy 3. Happy Rhodes - Warpaint/Equipoise 4. Tori Amos - Little Earthquakes 5. This Mortal Coil - Filigree and Shadow 6. The Cocteau Twins - Victorialand 7. Yazoo - Upstair's at Eric's 8. Blondie - Eat to the Beat/Autoamerican (for all the songs except The Tide is High/Rapture) 9. Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams (are Made of This) 10. Jewel - Pieces of You (though more for sentimental reasons--certainly not the artistic masterpiece as the previous albums) Favorite Songs (Mellow): 1. Lisa Gerrard - Sanvean (the most beautiful piece of music ever) 2. Sinead O'Connor - Troy 3. Jewel - Foolish Games/Wild Horse (Poem Song) 4. This Mortal Coil - Strength of Strings (Dominic Appleton has the greatest male voice ever) 5. Jane Siberry - An Angel Stepped Down/The Gospel According to Darkness 6. Alison Moyet - That Ole Devil Called Love/Love Letters (live)/ There are Worse Things I Could Do/Blow Wind Blow/Where Hides Sleep/ Midnight (w/ Yaz) 7. Victoria Williams - Can't Cry Hard Enough/What a Wonderful World 8. Clannad w/ Bono - In a Lifetime 9. Jane Kelly Williams - Breakin' Into the Past/Carry Him 10. The Wild Colonials - Don't Explain As you can see, I tend to like mellow songs by female vocalists. I do like other stuff, but this is the stuff I can listen to repeatedly and not get tired of. As for male vocalists, there aren't many I adore but a few I like are: Midge Ure, Paul Young, Suede, Peter Murphy/Bauhaus/Love and Rockets/Tones on Tail, Housemartins/Beautiful South, Jimmy Sommerville, Fashion (anyone remember them and the song You Only Left Your Picture?), Martin Fry of ABC, The The, and I like Bush and Stabbing Westward, which both surprise me. I also love David Sylvian's instrumental works--don't much care for his singing though. Jeff Hanson ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V1 #452 ***************************
