Wow, I completely loved it. I'm giddy with excitement because well it was just sooo cool. Everyone did a terrific job. The production, choreography, the star-studded cast, everything was terrific. Hee hee the little boy who played Toto was such a ham :-) And the munchkins, they were so neat, and lovable. I couldn't stop smiling. All the musical numbers were great, I'm just enraptured by the whole thing. I guess the story of the Wizard of Oz does that to everyone. It definitely made me feel really good. "I could dance and be merry, life would be a ???...." Sounds like dingleberry or piccadilly or something. Hee hee. Of course, Jewel was wonderful. Quite the character. Her acting, facial expressions, etc. was superb, but I'm probably jaded. ;-) And undoubtedly, her voice was, well, perfect. Totally loved it. Her scat singing to that *Jitterbug* ragtime-y tune was great. She looked quite at home on that huge stage in front of all those people. Jewel rules. You all know that. To tell the truth Robb and/or Fuzzy, I really don't know who Ruth Buzzi is either. But I HAD heard the name before at some point in my life, and in my quest to find a word that rhymed with Fuzzy and Wuzzy I came upon, of all things, Buzzi. I looked at the cast index of my 1995 Video Movie Guide and it turns out Ruth Buzzi was a supporting actress in such classics as "Freaky Friday" and "The Apple Dumpling Gang." I have no idea what she looks like, so maybe getting a kiss from Ruth would be even more blissful than a kiss from Jewel, but with a name like Ruth, and with a face like Jewel's, I think Fuzzy got the better end of the bargain. Thanks for correcting Akira on the theme song's origins: I'm afriad he's really losing it if he thinks your stuffed bear has learned how to type. One was about how we shouldn't feel that criticizing Jewel is bad just because we love her. Blind faith in an artist's decisions isn't very intelligent. And "blind faith in your leaders or in anything, will get you killed. 'Cause what I'm talkin' 'bout here is...war." If you can name the artist, year, and source, you're cool. The other post was about her being reviewed in Rolling Stone as having a good voice but bad material. Awesome! Bad press for Jewel is so rare that I have to revel in it. I was the guy who wrote the "Popularity is bad" post, so well, any denouncement of Jewel by the mainstream is kind of a good thing in my twisted mind. Lastly, my real criticisms. As an excellent writer myself who views Jewel's poetry as some of the best I have ever heard, far better than her lyrics, which are damn good too, I find it easy to relate to her from a writer's vantage point. But onething that most writers fall victim to every now and then is reusing the same imagery. Sometimes we overruse things. Here is my short list of Jewel's most over-used imagery words: tongue flesh angel fragile bash addiction leaves love heart soul Feel free to contribute your own. Not that she doesn't use them beautifully, but just that she uses them a lot. Later, Hooks "Come mothers and fathers throughout the land And don't criticize what you can't understand Your sons and your daughters are beyond your command Your old road is rapidly aging" - -Bob Dylan It was just the only song I could think of offhand with the word criticize in it. And by the way, Jewel would do a great cover of that song. Oh, and Pat Benatar is cool, Jewel should cover her too. That's for Selena who sat in front of me at Jewelstock and, now that I'm single and take this as a compliment please-looks damn good for her age, and was cool and friendly and didn't obscure my view of Jewel and likes Pat Benatar and whose husband? requested Nicotine Love, a song that I have requested in the past and she played it once and I was definitely the person who wooed her or was I just screaming it out louder than everybody? and periods are your friend I know but hey I'm a writer and I don't have to adhere to grammar if I don't feel like it. That's all. Later again. MTV sucks, so does Kathy Lee. Go see Trainspotting and A Time to Kill. Jewel dropped from 2 to 3 on VH1 countdown, good, popularity is still bad. Bye, for real this time. ------------------------------ From: Tom Proven Date: Sat, 3 Aug 1996 23:54:08 -0700 (PDT) Subject: Re: Ruth Buzzi (Was Re: Jealousy) I'm surethere are older member who can tell better, but they seem to have not so i will try. Bootlegs steal from artists. It is > true that art should be savored and shared but not by this means.... > > Peace, > > cj This debate usually has no winners, because we all find excuses to justify getting our favorite artists wealth of hiden material. But I must add my support to what CJ had to say. I have mentioned before that I have over 25 year of music industry experience. From owning a chain of record stores, promoting concerts, managing acts and owning my own record label. I would like to share a little of my experience and give you a peek into that dark world. Many of the things I am about to mention, will also reveal some of my dark sides. Not all of us were always angels. Not only did I have a vast collection of boots, but at one time was one of the best places to buy them on the east coast. If you want to play in the business of boots, its not hard. The manufacturers and distributors will find you. One of my suppliers was a nice old man that did it so he could afford his own collecting of rare soundtrack, musicals and classical music. He got real big and greedy and was arrested. He lost his house, his record collection and spent time in jail. The direct source started selling to me. This is big business, with factories, many employees and very sophisticated methods of distribution. Do not confuse the people on this list that trade or make small amounts of boots with what I'm talking about. Most of you would only see this type of person in the mobster movies. If one of our EDA's got too big making tapes or CD's of an artist they had interest in, they would find him and treat him like compeating drug dealers do. Just like in the movies, but I saw it in real life. We all love Jewel and many other artist that just don't put out enough commercial product for our very hungry needs. We want everything they have done. It's not because of greed but our passion for the art. Given a choice, we probably would buy from a legitimate source first. Buying from a underground source seems OK, but most of the time it's an Underground criminal source. Lets not support crime and the slime that profits from it. Just telling you what I have told you is very much against the rules and could get me a beating, but I've washed myself of all that slime long ago. I sold boots because of my own desire to deliver what my customers wanted, and my own passion for the music. I have never been driven by greed. I delt with this type of person because I thought it was the only way to get what was out there and often they made sure it was. On a later post I would like to describe how an artist makes their money. I know the bandwidth I use has been a lot at times but I'm doing it the best way I know how.
