If you can, please email me and tell me what airport is nearest to you. I was just wondering as I read through recent posts if anyone had ideas on where the people that handle programming get their impressions of what people want to see (and whether they are in general correct). For example, I don't know of anyone who enjoys NBC's attempt to turn every Olympic athlete into a member of a soap opera and the ten minute histories that go along with them. Are there people out there? Or what about MTV with there movement from being purely music television to being a bunch of bad shows, like Singled Out? Are there people who tune in specifically to watch Singled Out, or does it just get ratings from channel surfers who keep checking to see if MTV has started to play a music video? Mainly, though, I was wondering about the Olympics...It really bothers me that NBC keeps putting the (same) mini-soap operas. I guess it's because I feel somewhat insulted: they are assuming that I can't enjoy the Olympics for the sporting event that they are, and instead need to have some sort of surrounding fluff in order for the event to be meaningful... What do other people think? I could just be out of touch with everyone, I guess... :) Take care, - - Jon ------------------------------ From: The Pirate King Date: Wed, 31 Jul 1996 11:59:23 -0700 Subject: Dubs, Sponges, and Jewel's Guilt-Trip Dan Stark wrote: >Not that I don't >think your mind could keep up with such accellerated information Carter, but >high-speed dubbing destroys the very fabric of your soul, not to mention the >quality of the dub. Nobody need worry: this was a unique case where I just borrowed the boots from an EDA who lives very close by and did the dub-job for me, myself, and I only. My copies won't be serving as the masters for any further copying, since I don't have convenient access to a good dual-tape deck most of the year, and instead shall be used only for my own private listening pleasure. The outcry, however, makes me think my own best interests would be better served if I redo the dubs at normal speed; plus, if I do I won't have to see those friggin' Carebears again. And about the sponge thing; Toni Dunn told me that somebody beaned her with a sponge at JewelStock and asked if I was responsible. Now, since I was on the other side of the continent, I would LOVED to have taken the blame just to make the world record for sponge-throwing. And you're guilty too. Hey, hey, hey, the "sacrifice" debate was hardly a fracas, and Miss Kilcher has no reason to shy away from writing notes to us that express her personal views about politics, current events, etc. I, for one, enjoy yammering about such things in this forum, and when I do so there is no personal vendetta against Jewel or any desire to demolish her beliefs; I just like yammering for yammering's sake. And Jewel doesn't need to work on "really think[ing] before writing or speaking," at least not to this group. IT seems to me that there are alot of people with great ideas out theret no one is making any soild concrete decisions. I think the first thing that we have to do is to make one person responsible for organizing this huge event! I have plenty of free te right now , and am a Cosmic Jewel fan. SO if anyone thinks that this is a great idea please email me , post on the list who else would like to do it. My email address is chi3@ix.netcom.com JEWELSTOCK MEMORIES Crowd surfing Fuzzy- PRE-SHOW MOSH PIT- although we didn't mosh during "Everyday Angels" like we had planned, there was a killer mosh pit at the first show. What, you don't remember? Obviously you weren't one of the many Angels crowded outside the doorway for 2 hours, sweating it up while the Angels in Charge posed for pictures in the nice air conditioned bar while listening to Jewel's soundcheck. What was Crunch doing in there anyway? :) CONFISCATED NON-SHARPIE- Not only was I in charge of frisbee detection, I had another responsibility: making sure that only BLUE SHARPIES find their way to the delicate hands of our minstrel. Other less quality writing utinsels may discomfort her hand, causing her guitar playing to be slightly off. Any pen I saw at Camp JewelStock that was not regulation was used as kindling :) DIAL SOAP- Jewel made a plug for this during one of her shows, and I'm sure we all tossed out all of our old soap and ran to the nearest Supermarket to load up on Dial, didn't we? Or was it just me... PEPPERONI FROG- This information is now declassified, so I can share it with you. Someone on the list brought up the subject of using pepperonis in place of frisbees. Well to cover this situation I hired the best pepperoni catcher I could, who just happened to be a frog. Some of you had the opportunity to see him when he came out to scout the crowd before Jewel's first show. THE RENTAL CAR- Ah yes, besides the concert and everyone I met and playing frisbee and meeting Jewel and getting her autograph and seeing Lenedra and going out to eat with all of you and finally getting some sleep, somewhere on my list of fond memories is my rental car. For all we put it through (squeaking tires on turns, near collisions with deer, much dirt and mud, Mach 9) it help up very well. You should of seen it when I turned it in though, covered in dirt, muddy floor, and on my way to Manhattan I spilled a large coke on the passengers footwell. Glad it's "only a rental!" THE CONCERT- Being the self-centered guy I am, I'll just deal with my involvment with the concert. The first night when Jewel asked for requests, I yelled out "Waterfalls" and the whole first two rows broke out in laughter. She didn't get it, but I was more than happy to explain it to her later :) While testing Jewel's guitar before the second show, Mark "Kick-ass Guitar Player" approached the mike. I couldn't resist the oportunity, so I yelled out, "Yodel!" and he just gave me this grin hehehe. Later on during the show, when Jewel came out for her SECOND AND FINAL ENCOURE (yes, there were only 2 encoures...no matter how it's spelled) we had applauded for like 5 minutes while the lights kept going on and off. She finally made it on stage and after the thunderous aplause, the barn got quiet in anticipation of Jewel's next song. I took advantage of the situation and yelled out, "Jewel, you can't tease us like that!" to which she replied something like "I just wanted to make you really want it!" She also played "Chime Bells" sometime during the second show and several of us were ready for her to ask, "Should I go faster?" so we'd yell out "No! Save your voice, just play 3 other songs instead." Unfortunately I tipped her off about our plans after the first show, so she never asked if she should go faster. I know, I know...that'll teach me to keep my big mouth shut. PICTURE WITH JEWEL- Thanks for the shot, Gerrit. For those of you who have seen it, the reason Jewel and I are both laughing is cuz Tom had some trouble with his camera and as I was posing with my arm around Jewel I said, "That's OK, take your time Tom!" Still a memorous shot though. Anyone else notice the "ghost" inbetween Jewel and I during that shot? Well this post is pretty long, so I'll write part 2 later. It'll deal with my story at JewelStock, incase anyone cares. * * \____/ / JS \ "Powerbars and volleyball..." \ 96 / Jewel- "Satellite" |__| / \ / \ ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V1 #433 ***************************
