When you sign on to America Online, quite often the AOL Main Screen promotes something, and addresses you by your screen name.... Such as "Ducksoup! Check out the NEW AOL 3.0 Preview...." etc Well, three or four weeks ago they (America Online) were giving away tickets to something (I cannot remember what to), and I was logging on under one of my other screen names...keep in mind, this was durig the early stages of JewelStock planning, when we were ALL still quite paranoid about "word of JewelStock" getting out to the general public... Well, I was logging on under my AOL screenname of "JewelStock" (remember I used that one for EMAILs about the organizers scouting trip to Woodstock)...and when I got online I was greeted by: "JewelStock! Win FREE tickets........." and for a brief second or two my heart sank to my stomach thinking that SOMEHOW WORD OF JEWELSTOCK GOT OUT and I thought "How the HELL did AOL get word of JewelStock and HOW do they have tickets??? WE don't even have tickets"...then I realized they were just using my screen name...(i.e. it said "DuckOfPrey! Win FREE tickets......" when I went on later under that name) Mike ------------------------------ From: "James H. Recently many songs have been "custom-written" for films (e.g., Bruce Springsteen's and Eddie Vedder's participation on "Dead Man Walking") and I wonder what process these artists and Jewel go through to get their music on disc. Did Jewel read the scripts or attend pre-release screenings of the films before writing and/or recording her songs, or did agents approach her asking for pre-recorded tracks or requesting that she cover certain titles (i.e, "Sunshine Superman")? I ask this arcane question because of the rather unprecedented nature of a relatively unknown musician simultaneously appearing on so many records. Miss Kilcher must have a lot of fans in Hollywood, or some very aggressive agents. And since I can't let any message leave my system without some completely irrelevant material ... I've recently become mega-enthused by what is generally called "ambient" music. This stuff is pretty difficult to describe, and tags like "British electronic" and "Nine Inch Nails meets Yanni" hardly do it justice, but I am VERY impressed by a new album called "In Sides" by Orbital. If anyone watched the very end of last week's "120 Minutes," the final video was "The Box," off of that album. This was one of the best videos I've seen in a long time, and the piece (I can't call it a song, since there was no voice participation) was equally magnificent. I picked up "In Sides" a few days later and the entire album has me hooked. Ambient isn't for everyone; most of my friends can't stand the stuff, and you need patience and attention to delve through the complex arrangements of artists like Orbital, Aphex Twin, and The Orb (these guys really dig orbs, perhaps from having seen "Sleeper" a few too many times). But the rewards for me have been grand, and I recommend anyone with an inclination toward synthesized music give it a try. Buy it from the Wherehouse, though, where you can take advantage of their 30-day risk-free entertainment policy. - - Carter Navarro, Winner of the Gold for Synchronized Drowning P.S. - Kerri Strug is eighteen years old. So of course, I was pleasantly surprised, and of course I started singing along, silently (rich melko syndrome), with Jewel. As I was walking along, looking for my mom (yes I go shopping with my mom, and yes we have a tendency to get separated), I noticed two women and one man actually singing along with the song. Out loud. Softly. Well, when the chorus part came on. I smiled when one of the women did the ‘la dee dah...’ part. Very cute. My point is that well seems that she’s getting bigger and bigger, which is very cool, in that normal people doing nothing important unconsciously start to sing along with her. ‘Cause well in my experience, there was only one other time when I saw shoppers in tune with a song being played in a store. And it completely blew me away at the time, ‘cause well the song was “(I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life”, from the Dirty Dancing soundtrack, and every friggin’ person I passed by while I was in the produce section knew the words to that song. Every one. Not just the chorus, most all of the lyrics. And I was like, whoa, this is unbelievable. That was a good movie, and soundtrack, IMO, and I guess that one just moves people to sing, ‘cause it’s real heartfelt and lovey-dovey and whatnot. Okay. That’s it. That’s my story. Oh yeah I was wondering, I think that most people know the words to, and are inspired to lift their voices in harmony to, that Dirty Dancing song. I haven’t heard any other song that most people know that well. Even oldies, and through the seventies, and all the killer eighties tunes, and today’s music. It’s universally renowned, or something. Wondering if anyone else knows of another like that one. YMCA doesn’t count, though, since everyone only knows the chorus :-) ~Sameer ------------------------------ From: Al Date: Sun, 28 Jul 1996 00:16:35 -0700 Subject: dubbing question EDA's, I was wondering how other people felt about people who dub tapes, in exchange for an additional tape that the dubber gets to keep. One is a blank 90+ minute casette for me to > record the concert onto. The other is a tape that contains a copy of a > different Jewel performance for me to keep. Onto one I will dub the KROQ concert and return to you. The other > is for me to keep. Also enclosed with these tapes is either a SASE > (preferred) or money for return postage. > I thought the Jewel tapes were supposed to be non-profit, and although it's not much, this person is still profiting from this transaction. One version is the "you send me a boot and a blank and a SASE and I'll send you copy a boot for ya." The other is the "you send me two blanks and a SASE. I'll send back a boot." My own thoughts on this is that if the dubber is going to get a blank tape, they're definately making money... although only a couple bucks. The dubber getting a boot is not only getting a boot for himself but (s)he is also getting it without paying any postage. Why can't this person pay the postage to send the other the dubbed boot. (S)he is still ahead because postage for sending one tape is less than sending two. Well, that's my thought for anyone who cares.
