(needless to say i was wrong). while i do not think our artist will ever subject herself to "selling out" as i am afraid so many of my once-loved artists have done, the aspect of popularity can put a great deal of pressure on the artist and thus, the artist's "product," the music in this case. i also do not, for one, feel bad when those uninformed dont "get it" about where the music comes from: it's not just a pop song, is it? i know there will be a lot of input on this subject, so i will not say too much more right now, only that jewel is unlike most artists that generate pop interest, in that seeing here live is not like "hearing the singles." Instead it is like meeting a person (i am speaking of the show last fall, and of course JS, so correct me if i am wrong with the current tours). Feel very fortunate that you all did get to officially, MEET THE PERSON. cheers greg \ ______________________________uDc_ Gregory J Yanito Research Assistant Urban Design Center of Northeast Ohio gyanito@saed.kent.edu ------------------------------ From: ts140@gnn.com (Tim Schoenberg) Date: Thu, 25 Jul 1996 16:05:05 Subject: Re: West Coast Rules........ She was born on the west coast. She was raised in the west coast. She developed her ideas and thoughtfulness on the west coast. She wrote a considerable amount of her music on the west coast. She was supported and followed by her fans on the west coast YEARS before she was a "twinkle-in-your-ears". She was noticed and promoted on San Diego radio years before any station on the east coast began to play her music. Most importantly, according to her... she loves the west coast, specificly alaska and SAN DIEGO the MOST over any area that she has been to. So blahhhhhhhhh!!! Blah!!!!! Na! NA! Now without drawing this into a war.......We need to realize that if another JS happens it would only be FAIR for it to occour on the west coast. I know everyone in this group wants to be FAIR. It would be great to see her San Diego again. >Let's take a list vote, right here and now, and settle this once and for > all. >WINNER TAKES ALL! > > > I vote for West Coast, San Diego. Personally I would like to think that Jewel is just for us, but that is not the way I really feel. If popularity is what she wants, then popularity is what she should get. If popularity is not what she wants, then she shouldn't get. Besides, if she did get huge, we, being the most dedicated fans, probably would not be seeing her from 1500 rows back. We would be the people that camped out at the ticket place the day before to get the best tickets. (like the Neil Young fans did for the Indy show. By the time I got my tickets, the day after they went on sale, the only seats left were the ones in the second to last row.) BTW, is anyone from around Fredericksburg, or the Stafford,PW County area on the list? There is a new artist showcasung at the Irish Brigade here-- her name's Erin McKeoughan(sp?) ( I haven't seen her yet ). She plays acoustic guitar, and writes all her own stuff. The Brigade gave her a showcase night-- even though they had to waive their age limit-- she's only 18, and just graduated from high school. She usually plays in the coffee houses in the area. Anyway, the similarities are there-- and from what I hear, she's a great writer. That's right, born at Mercy Hospital in SD and raised in the La Costa and San Marcos area. My family had roots in the Escondido valley back to the twentites (when Escondido had about 200 people). You know when I was a teenager my friends and I had a favorite saying. "There is no life east of I-5." That's because we truly believed there was really nothing you needed on the other side, and life would quite content on the beach. Obviously, we were wrong, and although life in the area was great, it wasn't everything. IMHO, it is probably one of the most beautiful places on earth that was raped by a huge influx of people all looking for something they probably could have found in the cities they left. (If they would have just looked hard enough). So you can see, although I love my "hometown", I was happy to leave there. San Diego started to remind me of a hooker in Oceanside, constantly looking for another business, man, or government to offer more money. All the while blissfully smiling while she was getting screwed. (Ok, maybe that's a strong analogy.) Anyways, I am sorry if I offend you, Jewel or the entire state... but my feelings are my own and I can't help but express them. peace, ROB C. ------------------------------ From: Selena Martin Date: Thu, 25 Jul 1996 21:30:44 -0700 Subject: Chicago reunion Lets have a reunion in Chicago. Normally I like all the posts. Both Jewel content and non-Jewel content alike. And I myself contribute a few non-jewel content messages. But I must say this fight over Jewelstock II and where it should be is getting on my nerves. It's not even been a full week since the most intimate two concerts I've been to (JS) has ended. Yet there's a few here who seem to be (dare I use the word) demanding, maybe just begging for a repeat. And to top it off they're fighting over where it should be and which coast it the best. Shouldn't we be happy she offered us the first one and accept that. If someday Jewel feels she needs some intimacy with her biggest fans again, fine. She can decide when and where and if we can make it great, If we can't make it... to bad, but thank her non the less. Dean Harris P.S. Sorry if this offends anyone. And if you're really just kidding make sure the sarchasm is more evident. We'd hate for her to get the wrong idea and maybe she spoiled us. Is it going to go on like this? Where can I duck? You're right. The earliest I remember the "Jewel getting too popular" thread happening on this list when she appeared for the first time on Conan O'Brien back in what, June of last year? In fact, I think it was even earlier, near the end of her residency tours in the spring, when it looked like her coffeehouse days were over forever. And the same debate has happened at least once a month since then. It's all relative. Neal and Jeff H. could have bellyached about her becoming too popular when she stopped playing at the Innerchange and started touring the country, but luckily for me, instead they kept spreading the word about her far and wide, and that's how I found out about her. And also luckily for me, a LOT of people have discovered Jewel sometime since the first "Jewel's getting too popular" posting last year... I say luckily for me because I'm sure a lot of those people were the wonderful people I met at Jewelstock!!! So I say, let the world share in the magic that is Jewel. The world will become a better place for it. Certainly there are a lot of cool people out there who need Jewel and just don't know it yet! That said, I completely understand where you're coming from. I mourn the passing of the coffeehouse days. Ah well, we have our memories. Steve ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V1 #411 ***************************
