The bartender at the Pinecrest Lodge (Kizmo) told us that he had seen Flea in town and knew that he was in studio with Jewel. I meant to mention it before, but it had slipped my mind. Since Mike "deserving thanks for JS" Connell is apparently keeping a tally on how many people thought that there were three vs. two encores on Thursday night, I figured I would throw out my clear recollection of 2 encores. But, if it would make everyone feel better, we could all work on getting back the buried memory of the third encore, just some psychologists do to find cases of sexual harassment in people as children. Wow, that probably could have been said cleaner, more concisely and funnier. But oh well. I'd also like to say hi to the people that I met (Kevin, Maelea (sp?), Sam, Chad, John and to those met only very briefly, Mike Connell, Dennis (who needs a last name for Dennis?)). Also, can I comment how very caring it is of Jewel, Lenedra and Hiranya to let us all down so easily after Jewelstock? Soon after the concert, Hiranya posts, then posts a letter from Lenedra. Then, today, on the one week anniversary of the event we all loved being at (or wish we were at), Hiranya posts a letter from Jewel! :) Cool! One last thing about the controversy of posting the picture of Jewel and list members having lunch the day after the concert...I could be way off base here, but I would guess that someone was making a joke about the lunch, and that it did not actually take place...maybe all the other people that have written about posting the pictures were going along with the joke or I might just be living in denial ("It's not just a river in Egypt anymore" - Tom Arnold, _True Lies_) (sorry, never figured I'd get a chance to use that anyplace else) at the fact that some lucky listmembers got to have lunch with Jewel. But, unless someone thought that Dennis would frighten away Jewel fans that saw her and him having lunch (just kidding, D), I can't see a reason that Atlantic would care if the picture were posted... I was just at the Garedn on Sunday for the Who's Quadrophenia reunion thing and M'shell N'dege O'cello was the opening act. She had a full band and played about 35 minutes. But people are milling around and paying very little attention throughout her set, something she dealt with well but that Jewel will prob'ly be intimidated or dwarfeed by, especially considering that she is solo acoustic(quiet music). Hopefully she doesn't walk off stage, New Yorker's can be assholes at times, especially the grunge crowd that is likely to be up front for a Neil show. Jewel on MTV is a bad thing(although I love the song Quiet Warrior and was impressed with the performance). Jewel reaching number one on the VH1 countdown would be a bad thing. Letterman appearances and the like are bad things. It's easy to get excited about your favorite artist getting some play and popularity, but be careful what you wish for. I've seen many a legitimate young artist get turned into a one-hit wonder by such behavior, or worse, a superstar. I don't think Jewel wants to be super-popular ala Madonna, Alannis, Mariah, Whitney. She complained incessently about how Sean Penn couldn't even walk down the street without being mobbed and how just being with him was very intimidating and scary for a girl from Alaska. Is that what we want for her? Do you want to see her at arenas or small clubs and venues? Do you want another Jewelstock at a place like the Bearsville Theatre? If so, you can't want her to be popular. You can't have your cake and eat it too. WWSYS is one of my favorite Jewel songs but I've been hearing it for a year and a half, I hear it every day, see the video every day, if I'm watching TV or listening to the radio. And I change the fucking channel as soon as possible. That opening bass riff actually hurts my ears at this point as I shun from the song that made me a Jewel fan. I know there are people out there going, "well, he's just selfish and doesn't want what's best for our Jewel." Wrong. I care about Jewel's future a lot. The fact that Pieces of You is a very radio unfriendly folk album and still it went gold scares the hell out of me. The next album could be disastruous. Atlantic is gonna promote it a lot more, and the songs from what I gather, are gonna be much more upbeat and radio friendly. Not good things. I want to tell everyone how great she is. I want to play my bootleg tapes for all my friends. I want to tell everyone that she is the greatest thing since sliced bread and how her concerts are mind blowing emotionally moving experiences. But I don't. I contain myself, takes a lot of will power. But I know it's for the best. I have a couple of friends who are into her and will go to the concerts with me, that's all I need. So, just again, be careful what you wish for. Jewel will be corrupted by popularity not helped by it. Please let WWSYS be her last hit radio/video for at least ten years. Look at Tracy Chapman, she has had the perfect career. Ten years ago in 86 Fast Car came out. Then she disappeared to the Z100 MTV world and stayed true to her roots audience. Then ten years down the road she comes back to the top 40 billboard MTV pop radio world with Give ME One Reason. That should be our model. TV appearances and soundtracks and movies and videos and surfrider specials and VH1 duets are not necessary anymore. She's popular enough, stop promoting yourself Jewel, we wanna see you, not a speck of blonde hair that I have to strain to see from the 1500th row. I don't wanna be able able to say I knew her when, I want to know her now continuously. I am not trying to stunt her artistic growth, her message is an important one that should be heard, but the more people that hear the message in the pop sell-out context, the more that miss the point. Go ahead, flame away, just make sure you don't regret it when I'm saying told you so a couple months or a year or two down the road when this digest has thousands of members and events like Jewelstock are impossible and she won't be putting her arm around any of you or taking pictures or signing autographs because she's scared of stalkers, the press, and fame/the media in general. Sorry if that sounded bitter, just hate to lose something that I care about. I'm afraid after my JS experience I have to agree (at least in theory) with you. Sitting where I was, away from the protective and loving cocoon that the list member enjoyed in the front, I was surrounded by screaming teenage fans. I saw a similar thing happen to other artists that I love - Tori Amos, famous for chatting it up with the audience, was shoutted down by the crowd in Burlington, VT by scrreams of "Play Cornflake Girl!" Indigo Girls ended up putting out a double-live album, a thing usually reserved for the likes of Slayer, Winger, and Motley Crue. I would hate to see Jewl move from the realm of ARTIST to the realm of PERFORMER. We see it already in the screams of "YODEL!" -as if Jewel is not a person, but a toy or a musical vending machine. - -- - -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- jeffm@genghis.com http://luna.genghis.com/jeff/index.htm - -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V1 #407 ***************************
