NJC:Tomatoes ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Luis Araujo Date: Tue, 23 Jul 1996 10:32:59 -0400 Subject: JS experience Ok, I guess I better do this too. I'll give a Canadian account of the happenings. Me and my friend rented a car friday at 11:45am, bought some water, and we were off on our merry way to sunny Bearsville. I had planned the trip to take 6 hours or so but my friend convinced me that he knew a shortcut. We took a road that didn't know if it wanted to head east, west, south, or north. 6:00 pm came and a storm hit us slowing us down dramatically. The beware of falling rocks signs bothered me a little. I don't think I ever came accross these in Canada. Incidently, none fell and we were thankful. After missing every exit we could possibly miss and still retain sanity, we arrived at the theater at 8:32. I was amazed at how everyone was actually sitting down. I have to admit that I have never seen a croud such as this. I was disapointed that we were late and did not have a chance to mingle. We had to stand off to the side by the camera person which turned out great because of our close proximity to the lovely Jewel. The only down side was that I just finished driving 8 and a half hours and could barely stand. Oh well, I guess I gave Jewel a 2 and a half hour standing ovation. The concert as everyone is aware of by now was incredible as Jewel was at her carasmatic best. The show seemed to last only half an hour but as I mentioned it was closer to 2 and a half hours. I was disapointed that I could not wait and talk to Jewel or get an autograph but I had promised my friend I would take him right back. So, after looking at how clear the stars were, I got back on my car and headed back to Toronto. 16 hours of driving with a 3 hour break in between is something I won't do anytime soon but I made a promise. We made it just into the buffalo area when a state trooper stopped me for speeding. He came up to my windows and said welcome to the Big Time. I had no idea what he was talking about but he seemed incredible arrogant. He then went back to his car, got on his loud speaker, and was kind enough to announce that my fine would be in U.S. funds. What do these guys get paid? There must be a reason why they are so bitter. Oh well, after his attept to publically humiliate us we were on our way again. At this time I was so tired that I could not care less. Even the customs person let me though without bothering me. I think I was yelling at her that I bought nothing and judging by her reaction she believed me. We got home at 10 AM and I have been sleeping ever since..... Would I go thought this again for a JS event... In a minute!! well, a few thousand... If there is another JS I promise I will plan it better in order to meet some of you wonderfuly delightful people. Thanks to all who made this happen!!! You pay $20/wk and you get all this great organically grown fruits and vegetables. My first pickup starts this week and I didn't want to go home empty handed. So I asked for whatever $9 would buy because that was all I had in my pocket. He said he had some tomatoes, but they had to be used right away. He brings out this big 25lbs box and I was thrilled. He goes and gets another box and says that he wanted to give me some extra for being nice about a few questions he had about his computer. A few nice words and $9, I got 50 lbs of perfect, organically grown, vine ripened, over one lb each, beefsteak tomatoes. After eating 8 tomatoes in a row, I started thinking. Wouldn't it be nice to give some away. But who would be worthy of such a treasure. I made up my list. Some for Kathy's boss. He helped my son get a part time job. My friend Lottie who takes care of her stroke-stricken 81 yr husband Bill. A guy I hardly knew named Cas who brought back perogies from Jersey for us. The list went on like a review of people I owe for being nice to me, special to others, and some that just could use a little help. As your mouths water from the description of these beautiful jewels of the earth, you probably think of me as cruel. You can see me now with a red stained shirt, tomato seeds still stuck to my face, as I lick my lips clean of the last bit of salted juice. You probably know were I'm going with this, after all this is the Jewel Mailing List isn't it. For all of you that went to JewelStock, I couldn't be happier. I do not envy you at all. Exactly what was reported back from Woodstock, was what I was hoping I would read. As I read your hyper-ventilating descriptions, I felt your joy. It was as if I was there with you. When I check out the pictures of JewelStock on various web sites, I am sure you will all look just as I imagined. Not going to JS, but having this list of wonderful people reporting back was as good as being there. All of us that didn't go are very lucky to have gotten to know all of you so well and have you share your moments of pleasure with us. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. A short time ago, I would have called up a lot of people and sold the extra tomatoes for a profit. Instead I got personal pleasure from sharing with friends. A short time ago, I would have been too afraid to write a letter because of a fobia to do so. Instead a group of strangers have encouraged me to overcome my fear. A short time ago, I would have duked it out with the flames on the list. But instead I found how easy it is to find a kind word. Being nice is a new thing for me. I thank you all for this as well. Jewel has set a new standard for other artist to follow. We all listen to other artist and we should demand the same excellence from them. And for all the other lists out there, we have set a new standard of excellence for them to follow. For those of you that keep on complaining about all the NJC, bear with the extra flow of postings. Things will slow down. But by then you may think back and realize that it was nice to read all those juicy, salty, ripe, stories. And if no one puts you on there tomatoe list, its your own fault. former father from hell your tomato man Igor igorwas@smartcitysys.com ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V1 #395 ***************************
